German to English: Literary Translation (period fiction); Excerpt from current translation project with the Karl May Foundation and Nemsi Books
Translation - English Shepheard's Hotel, Neue Hotel, Hôtel d'Orient, Hôtel du Nil, Hôtel d’Ambassadeurs and numerous guesthouses, cafes and restaurants offer complete satisfaction of all needs which the stranger had become accustomed to in his homely upbringing. The price however is dear, and who, like me, is not in possession of the earnings of English Lords ought to keep as far away as possible from those common places of European nabobs.
It is, of course, easier said than done. A stranger, who wishes to avoid the mentioned establishments, yet to live in Cairo, is forced to take lodgings with the natives and, unless he is willing to accept daily and hourly fraud to his disadvantage, would have to be acquainted with local conventions as well as be equipped with a somewhat good command of the Arabic language.
