Source text - English Another thing that was easier about his new situation was the complete absence of all the subtler forms of ostracism the had earlier endured. He hadn't realised that there were so many ways that you could hurt someone. Life at junior high school had been an almost unmitigated series of affronts and petty humiliations.
Even now, safe from the indignities he had suffered at school, recalling them alone was enough to make his body tense with fear. Since it had taken him years to learn the conditioned responses to a whole host of stimuli and situations, he supposed it would take just as long to unlearn them. But it was taking longer. He didn't know why. What he had experienced then had become either muscle or scar tissue.
Translation - Italian Unʼaltra cosa molto più semplice, rispetto alla sua nuova situazione, era la completa assenza di tutte quelle sottili forme di ostracismo che aveva dovuto subire in precedenza. Non aveva mai preso atto di quanto fossero numerosi i modi per ferire qualcuno. La vita, alle scuole medie, era stata una serie quasi ininterrotta di affronti e meschine umiliazioni.
Anche ora, al sicuro dagli oltraggi patiti a scuola, il solo fatto di richiamarli alla mente era sufficiente a far irrigidire il suo corpo dalla paura. Visto che cʼerano voluti anni per imparare le risposte condizionate allʼintera sequela di stimoli e situazioni, lui supponeva ci sarebbe voluta la stessa quantità di tempo per dimenticarle. Ma ci stava mettendo più del previsto e non riusciva a spiegarsene il motivo. Quello che aveva subìto a quel tempo non era ancora diventato né muscolo né cicatrice.

Source text - English Royston shrugged.
"It is supposed to make me a man of vigor, with red corpuscles and a need for cold shower baths. Actually, there is nothing wrong with me. I was simply born to sit and watch while great louts like you run and wrestle and climb and sweat."
He shifted his gaze to the peak, now a dark silhouette against the ice-clear stars.
"There, the light shows again."
Slowly the red glow progressed along a cliff face, much higher than it had before.
For minutes it moved along steadily, then faded.
"That thing," said Evers suddenly, "was goin' along Fifth Avenue. Spooks don't need a route of ascent, even up Precipice. All of a sudden, the lights of Precipice Peak are gettin' solid. I got a feelin' they'll leave sign."
"Sign?"
Royston's voice went up in the darkness.
There was the familiar pause, then Royston's satisfied tone: "Ah, yes, traces."
"Right—traces, tracks, spoor. Only mystery about those lights is, we don't know who makes them. But they're gettin' to be a tourist attraction. Maybe that's a lead."
"How many trips have there been up Precipice this season?"
Royston queried softly.
Translation - Italian Royston scrollò le spalle.
"Avrebbe dovuto trasformarmi in un uomo vigoroso, con globuli rossi e il bisogno di docce fredde. Per la verità, non c'è niente di sbagliato in me. Sono semplicemente nato per sedermi e osservare grandi bifolchi come te correre e lottare, arrampicarsi e sudare."
Spostò lo sguardo verso la vetta, ora una sagoma scura contro le stelle trasparenti come il ghiaccio.
"Ecco la luce, di nuovo."
Lentamente il bagliore rosso avanzò sulla parete rocciosa, molto più in alto di quanto avesse mai fatto prima.
Per alcuni minuti si mosse in maniera costante, per poi sfumare.
"Quella cosa," disse all'improvviso Evers, "era anche sulla Quinta Strada. I fantasmi non hanno bisogno di un percorso in salita, nemmeno su a Precipice. Le luci di Precipice Peak stanno diventando compatte tutte insieme. Sento che lasceranno un segno."
"Un segno?"
La voce di Royston crebbe nell'oscurità.
Ci fu la solita pausa, poi il tono soddisfatto di Royston: "Eh, sì. Tracce."
"Giusto - tracce, piste, segnali. L'unico mistero riguardante quelle luci è che non sappiamo chi sia a crearle. Ma stanno diventando un'attrazione turistica. Forse è questa la traccia da seguire."
"Quante escursioni sono state fatte fino in cima a Precipice quest'anno?"
Domandò Royston a bassa voce.

Source text - English The studio was filled with the rich odour of roses, and when the light summer wind stirred amidst the trees of the garden, there came through the open door the heavy scent of the lilac or the more delicate perfume of the pink-flowering thorn. From the corner of the divan of Persian saddle-bags on which he was lying, smoking, as was his custom, innumerable cigarettes, Lord Henry Wotton could just catch the gleam of the honey-sweet and honey-coloured blossoms of a laburnum, whose tremulous branches seemed hardly able to bear the burden of a beauty so flame-like as theirs; and now and then the fantastic shadows of birds in flight flitted across the long tussore-silk curtains that were stretched in front of the huge window, producing a kind of momentary Japanese effect, and making him think of those pallid, jade-faced painters of Tokyo who, through the medium of an art that is necessarily immobile, seek to convey the sense of swiftness and motion. The sullen murmur of the bees shouldering their way through the long unmown grass, or circling with monotonous insistence round the dusty gilt horns of the straggling woodbine, seemed to make the stillness more oppressive. The dim roar of London was like the bourdon note of a distant organ. In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty, and in front of it, come little distance away, was sitting the artist himself, Basil Hallward, whose sudden disappearance some years ago caused, at that time, such public excitement and gave rise to so many strange conjectures.
As the painter looked at the gracious and comely form he had so skilfully mirrored in his art, a smile of pleasure passed across his face, and seemed about to linger there. But he suddenly started up, and closing his eyes, placed his fingers upon the lids, as though he sought to imprison within his brain some curious dream from which he feared he might awake.

I am already far north of London, and as I walk in the streets of Petersburgh, I feel a cold northern breeze play upon my cheeks, which braces my nerves and fills me with delight. Do you understand this feeling? This breeze, which has travelled from the regions towards which I am advancing, gives me a foretaste of those icy climes. Inspirited by this wind of promise, my daydreams become more fervent and vivid. I try in vain to be persuaded that the pole is the seat of frost and desolation; it ever presents itself to my imagination as the region of beauty and delight. There, Margaret, the sun is forever visible, its broad disk just skirting the horizon and diffusing a perpetual splendour. There—for with your leave, my sister, I will put some trust in preceding navigators—there snow and frost are banished; and, sailing over a calm sea, we may be wafted to a land surpassing in wonders and in beauty every region hitherto discovered on the habitable globe. Its productions and features may be without example, as the phenomena of the heavenly bodies undoubtedly are in those undiscovered solitudes. What may not be expected in a country of eternal light? I may there discover the wondrous power which attracts the needle and may regulate a thousand celestial observations that require only this voyage to render their seeming eccentricities consistent forever.

Comprendi quello che sto provando? Questa brezza, che viene dalle regioni verso le quali mi sto avventurando, mi regala un assaggio di quei climi gelidi. Ispirati dal vento di promesse, i miei sogni a occhi aperti diventano più fervidi e vigorosi.
