Rok 2001 charakteryzował się niekorzystną koniunkturą na Giełdzie Papierów Wartościowych w Warszawie. Warszawski Indeks Giełdowy (WIG) spadł w skali rocznej o 22%, natomiast indeks WIG20, w skład którego wchodzi 20 największych spółek notowanych na GPW, spadł o 33%. Największe spadki dotyczyły spółek związanych z informatyką oraz telekomunikacją (o 59%). Korzystniej zachował się indeks uwzględniający spółki o średniej kapitalizacji - MIDWIG, który wzrósł o 1,6% [...]
Głównym powodem niekorzystnej koniunktury na rynku było osłabienie wzrostu gospodarczego, zarówno w Polsce, jak i w najważniejszych gospodarkach światowych. Skutkowało to spadkową tendencją na większości giełd światowych. Dodatkowym negatywnym czynnikiem był wrześniowy atak terrorystyczny w USA, który wywołał krótkotrwałą panikę na rynkach światowych.
2001 r. był ostatnim rokiem oddzielnych notowań akcji Banku Przemysłowo-Handlowego i Powszechnego Banku Kredytowego na Giełdzie Papierów Wartościowych w Warszawie. Ceny akcji Banków na koniec 2001 r. były wyższe niż na koniec 2000 r. Mimo ogólnej dekoniunktury ekonomicznej kursy akcji BPH i PBK kształtowały się w minionym roku lepiej niż rynek.

2001 was unfavourable for the Warsaw Stock Exchange. The WSE WIG index took a knock of 22% over the year, whilst the WIG20 index, which contains the 20 largest WSE listed companies, plummeted 33%. IT and telecommunication companies suffered the most (tumbling 59%). The MIDWIG index, incorporating enterprises with medium capitalization, was more favourable and registered a rise of 1.6%[...]
The main reason for such unfavourable results was the relaxation in economic growth, not only in Poland but also throughout the world's most important economies. This resulted in the majority of the world's stock exchanges going into decline. A further negative factor was the September terrorist attack in the USA, which caused short-term panic on the global markets.
2001 was the last year that Bank Przemysłowo-Handlowy and Powszechny Bank Kredytowy shares were traded separately on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Share prices of both Banks at year-end 2001 were higher than at year-end 2000. Despite general deterioration in the economy BPH and PBK share prices last year outperformed the market.

W zamyśleniu zupełnie nieświadomie otworzył zamiast drzwi swoich, drzwi pokoju Julci. [...] Wszedł po ciemku i nie zapalając świecy usiadł na pierwszym z brzegu krześle, i patrząc na okno, przez które było widać niebo niebieskie od niewidocznego księżyca, zdjął buty i skarpetki - najważniejsze części swojego ubrania, poza tym nie miał na sobie dużo, lekkie okrycie ciała spoczęło obok krzesła. Podszedł do łóżka i tutaj spostrzegł pomyłkę swoją, zaśmiał się cicho i sam nie wiedział już, dlaczego począł ową pomyłkę kontynuować; sam grać przed sobą. Dotknął leżącej dziewczyny, ale ona się nie ruszyła, siadł przy niej, spała. Wyciągnął się obok niej i poczuł całą rozkosz jej ciała przez cienkie prześcieradło. Po chwili zrozumiał, że Julcia nie śpi, i zmartwiał z tego wrażenia. Leżeli tak przy sobie przez długie chwile, nie mówiąc ani słowa, powściągając oddech. Pomału, nieznacznie, jak wskazówki zegara wykonywali cały szereg zmian pozycji, aby się zbliżyć ku sobie, objąć, przycisnąć. Nigdy w życiu Wiktor nie zapomni tego wrażenia, jakiego doznał poczuwszy pod dłońmi skórę tej dziewczyny. Było to coś tak skończenie pięknego, ciepłego i materialnego jak kwiat. Nie wie, dlaczego nie powiedzieli nic do siebie. Dlaczego symulowali nawzajem przed sobą całkowicie nieprawdopodobną komedię snu? To, co robili, wykluczało wszelką możliwość nieświadomości. Wiktor czuł takie natężenie wszystkich sił [...] w sobie, że ogarniał go jakiś bolesny zachwyt, każde przesunięcie ręką po ciele Julci przyprawiało go prawie o omdlenie. Że nigdy przedtem nie odczuwał nic podobnego, to nie dziwota, bo jakiż tam to był ten jego dotychczasowy [...], ale nigdy potem to się nie powtórzyło i wspomnienie tej pierwszej nocy miłosnej, bardzo gorącej i cichej, nosił sobie przez całe życie. Nigdy już nic, żaden owoc ani żadne ciało nie miało tego dotyku, tej sprężystości w ugięciu się, tego atłasu, co młode ciało] Julci wtedy w Wilku. Nie spali, udając sen, do świtu. Wtedy Wiktor zabrał swoje rzeczy i przekradł się do swojego pokoju. Zasnął wtedy naprawdę jakby snem kamienia i zbudził się dosyć późno.

He approached the bed and only now perceived his error, but he merely chuckled to himself and without grasping the meaning of his actions, continued this game of error, continued to cheat himself. He touched the sleeping girl, yes, she was asleep, quite silent, quite still. Next, he stretched out and at once grew conscious of the warmth, the pleasure surrounding the young girl's limbs. By then he realised that Julia was no longer asleep, his limbs grew tense and numb. They hardly breathed, never spoke, never moved. But then, gradually, like the hands of a clock, their fingers stirred, their bodies drew close, and closer still, their arms embraced. Never in his life would Victor forget those tingling sensations, those boundless pleasures piercing his body and hands. It was something so beautiful, so radiating, something as natural as a flower. But why had they remained so silent, spoken no words, why had they simulated such a parody of sleep? There was nothing unconscious in what they had done. Victor grew so aware of his [...] vigour that each time his fingers glided over Julia's body, he was filled with such intense erotic torment that he almost lost his mind.
