Il aurait été facile au 20e siècle, avec le progrès technique, d’uniformiser toutes ces productions artisanales pour garder un fromage unique, comme par exemple le Cheddar aux Etats-Unis. Source text - French La peinture sert à évoquer ce qui nous importe le plus -je crois- c’est-à-dire le mystère du monde. Et on a une vie comme ça qui a l’air totalement banale dans sa structuration mais en même temps qui est extraordinairement subversive dans sa liberté de pensée. Sa pensée est une pensée qui considère la peinture comme un outil.
Il ne jouait pas l’artiste en tout cas; c’était vraiment un type qui avait un boulot.
Je crois que j’ai peint depuis 1926 plus de mille tableaux alors il est assez inconcevable de réunir tout ça.
Depuis toujours, je songe à réunir les pièces du mystère...
Quel rêve pour un acteur de pouvoir incarner un jour Magritte, tenter de résoudre l’énigme de cet homme qui me fascine tant il semble anodin. La littérature concernant l’œuvre du peintre abonde, mais les images connues de l’homme ne révèlent qu’une silhouette froide, un chapeau boule sans visage, un costume trois pièces sans taches.
Comme si René Magritte s’était évertué méthodiquement à rester anonyme, tenant à distance le succès de ses tableaux qui firent pourtant le tour du monde et qui se vendent aujourd’hui à plusieurs millions de $.
Pour approcher l’homme, je me suis décidé à retracer le parcours de sa vie et mon voyage à sa recherche commence là ou se termine le sien, dans le cimetière de Schaerbeek à Bruxelles.
Parmi les allées sans histoire, je retrouve la tombe dessinée par le peintre lui-même, une tombe sans fioritures, où il repose aux côtés de sa femme Georgette. Magritte est mort d’un cancer du pancréas, chez lui, le 15 août 1967, après une courte hospitalisation.
Les photos de son enterrement m’apprennent que beaucoup de monde assiste à ces funérailles. Elles semblent sobres mais de première classe.
J’aurai imaginé quelques effets surréalistes, un pied de nez à la mort mais l’homme au chapeau melon s’en est allé simplement.
De retour dans ma loge, je n’arrive pas à me résoudre à l’image lisse du petit-bourgeois qu’il voulait donner de lui-même. Lui qui disait que : « chaque chose visible cache autre chose de visible. »
Je tombe alors sur une série de tableaux que je ne connaissais pas. Les connaisseurs parlent de sa « période vache ». Des toiles intrigantes, pleine de révolte, qui m’interpellent et m’offrent une porte d’entrée singulière pour mieux connaître l’homme.
Je décide de me rendre aux musées royaux des beaux arts à Bruxelles, lieu où sont conservés un grand nombre de toiles dont toutes celles léguées par sa femme Georgette.
J’ai pris rendez-vous devant une des toiles « vache » de la collection avec Michel Draguet, directeur des musées royaux…
…Tous les livres que j’ouvre sont truffés de photos de groupe, à croire que l’esprit de bande n’a jamais quitté Magritte... ceux là seraient-ils les dignes successeurs de la bande de Châtelet ?
Oui je sens que les amis font partie de la vie de Magritte, l’activité surréaliste se vit en groupe. Ils sont écrivains, poètes, artistes et gouailleurs : Marcel Lecomte, Mesens, Goemans, Nougé, Scutenaire, Marcel Marien et Paul Colinnet pour ne parler que de la garde rapprochée.
Ensemble, ils inventent un autre monde à coup de clichés absurdes et de fous rires. Ils se réunissent souvent à la fleur en papier doré, vieil estaminet bruxellois aux murs marqués par les passages intempestifs de la bande à Magritte. Grands débats irrévérencieux, petites phrases assassines, celui qui trouvera le titre le plus équivoque au dernier tableau de René aura droit à 24h d’irrespect...
C’est dans cette ambiance aux couleurs d’alors que je retrouve Sarah Withfield, spécialiste incontestée du monde de Magritte puisqu’elle a travaillé près de 20 ans sur l’œuvre du peintre…

I’ve always dreamt of bringing together the different components of the mystery...
What a joy for an actor to play Magritte, to try and wrap your mind around the enigma of this man, whose insignificance is fascinating. There are countless pieces of literature about the painter, but those images known by man reveal nothing more than a cold silhouette, a faceless bowler hat or a pocket-less three-piece suit.
It’s as if René Magritte carefully endeavored to remain unknown, casting a shadow over the success of his paintings which, incidentally, adorn every corner of the world and sell today for millions of dollars.
In order to gain a better understanding of this man, I decided to retrace his life’s journey, and my journey began where his ended, the Schaerbeek cemetery in Brussels.
Nestled among ordinary pathways, I came across his tomb, painted by the artist himself. This final resting place, where he lies alongside his wife Georgette, is unembellished and simple. Magritte died of pancreatic cancer on August 15, 1967, at his residence, after a short hospital stay. Pictures from his burial show that his funeral was well attended. The guests were simplistic examples of society's best. I would have expected a few Surrealistic touches, a sort of thumbing of one’s nose towards death, but the man with the bowler hat simply slipped away.
Back in my dressing room, I just couldn’t bring myself to accept the simple image of a lower middle-class man that he tried so hard to portray. This man who once said: “every visible thing is concealing something else visible.”
This led me to discover a series of paintings with which I was not yet familiar. Connoisseurs speak of his “cow period.” Intriguing canvases and rebellious works called out to me, extending a solitary invitation to discover who this man was.
I decided to visit the Royal Museums of Fine Arts in Brussels which houses a large number of canvases passed on from his wife Georgette. I made my way to one of the “cow” canvases showcased from the collection of Michel Draguet, the Director of the Royal Museums…
…Each book I open is littered with pictures of the group; you’d think the spirit of the gang stuck with Magritte forever... could they have been the dignified successors of the Châtelet gang?
I could sense that these friends were part of Magritte’s life. The Surrealist movement was alive in the group. They were writers, poets, artists and cocky jokesters: Marcel Lecomte, Mesens, Goemans, Nougé, Scutenaire, Marcel Marien and Paul Colinnet, just to mention the most important figures in his entourage.
Together, they invented another world filled with absurd clichés and hysterical laughter. They often met up at the Fleur en Papier Doré, an old tavern in Brussels where the walls were marked by the untimely visits of the Magritte gang. Long, profane debates, short and provocative slips of the tongue—the one who could come up with the most questionable title for René’s latest painting would earn 24 hours of disrespect.
It was in this colorful setting that I learned about Sarah Withfield, an undisputed expert on Magritte who had studied his work for 20 years…

J 3 : Agra – Ranthambore [6H – 250 Km]
Le matin, nous nous arrêtons dans la ville fantôme de Fatehpur Sikri, à 40 km à l’Ouest d’Agra.
Cette ancienne capitale, construite par l'empereur Akbar en 1659, fut abandonnée plus tard à cause du manque d'eau. Nous verrons les édifices gracieux composant cette ville noble, dont le Jama Masjid, la tombe de Salim Christi, Panch Mahal et d'autres palais. Puis route vers Ranthambore et visite de son fort datant du Xème siècle. Installation et nuit à l’hôtel.
J 6 : Pushkar – Jodhpur [4/5H – 180 Km]
Départ le matin en direction de Jodhpur, ville populeuse et grouillante dominée par une forteresse massive. Installation à l’hôtel. Visite de la vieille cité, en partant de la Tour de
l’Horloge et à ses pieds, le Sardar Market. Nuit à l’hôtel.
Dans les campagnes indiennes, la route est une aventure. Il est écrit « Horn Please » au cul de tous les camions et les Indiens ne s’en privent pas. Vous ne serez bientôt plus surpris de voir le chauffeur slalomer entre les éléphants, les tracteurs, les camions, les dromadaires et les charrettes !
J 8 : Jaisalmer – Désert du Thar en dromadaire
Départ le matin en jeep dans le désert du Thar. En route, visite du temple jaïn d’Amarsagar, des cénotaphes de Barabagh, de Loduvra, l’ancienne capitale du royaume de Jaisalmer et du village abandonné de Kuldhara. Déjeuner au village de Khuri, où nous rencontrons l’équipe chamelière et leurs dromadaires. Départ à dos de dromadaire au milieu du désert. Arrivée au campement au coucher du soleil. Dîner et bivouac dans les dunes (tentes, matelas, draps et
couvertures fournies). PENSION COMPLETE
L’Ouest du Rajasthan, appelé en marwari Marusthali, le « pays du sable », constitue l’une des extrémités du désert du Thar, une étendue de pierrailles et de sable qui s’étend jusqu’au Sindh (actuel Pakistan) et qui est englobée dans cette vaste ceinture aride qui va du Sahara au désert de Gobi en passant par l’Asie Centrale et Mineure.
NB : Les visites mentionnées ci-dessus sont facultatives. Le seul impératif étant de respecter les étapes. Votre chauffeur est à votre disposition durant toute la journée (de 7h00 à 22h00).

J1: Arrival in Delhi

Mark Twain once said that humanity was made up of two kinds of people: those who have seen the Taj Mahal, and those who have not. Construction of this "stacked" structure, 73 metres high and framed by four large minarets in the shape of birthday candles, lasted for 22 years and employed a labour force of 20,000, who transported the emperor's entire fortune, along with tons of marble from Rajasthan, on the backs of camels and elephants until its completion in 1653.
J3: Agra–Ranthambore [6hrs – 250km]
We'll make a stop in the morning in the ghost town of Fatehpur Sikri, situated 40km west of Agra. This ancient capital, built by Emperor Akbar in 1659, was abandoned later due to a lack of water. We'll explore the graceful buildings that adorn this noble city, including the Jama Masjid, the tomb of Salim Chishti, the Panch Mahal and various other palaces. We'll then make our way to the Ranthambore fortress, which dates back to the 10th century. Hotel check-in and overnight stay.
J6: Pushkar–Jodhpur [4/5hrs – 180km]
We'll head out in the morning towards Jodhpur, a densely populated, bustling city at the foot of a massive fortress, where we'll stay overnight. We'll visit the old town, including the famous clock tower, which soars above the Sardar Market, the next stop on our tour. Overnight stay.
In the Indian countryside, the roads are an adventure in themselves. On the back of every truck, you'll find signs reading "Horn Please", and Indians take this quite seriously. It'll soon be commonplace to have your driver weaving through elephants, tractors, trucks, camels and wagons!
J8: Jaisalmer – Thar Desert on an Arabian camel
We'll set off early by jeep in the Thar Desert. On the way, we'll visit the Amar Sagar Jain Temple, the Bara Bagh cenotaphs, the Lodurva Temple Town—former capital of Jaisalmer—and the deserted town of Kuldhara. We'll have lunch in the Khuri village, where we'll meet our camel guides and their dromedary camels. We'll leave town and head out into the desert on camelback, reaching our camp at sundown. Dinner is served amid bivouac tents nestled in the dunes (tents, mattresses, sheets and blankets are provided). FULL BOARD
The western part of Rajasthan, known in the Marwari language as Marusthali, or "Land of the Dead", makes up one of the Thar Desert's westernmost points, a stretch of loose rocks and sand that extends to Sindh (currently Pakistan) and is surrounded by a vast, dry belt of land that reaches from the Sahara to the Gobi Desert, cutting through both Central Asia and Asia Minor.
Note: The excursions mentioned above are optional. The stop-over points are the only mandatory part of the journey. Your driver is at your disposal throughout the entire trip (from 7am-10pm).
