ABOUT ME (EN ESPAÑOL MÁS ABAJO)

PHASE 1
I was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. My Venezuelan mother (a Palacios) married a guy from Denmark (a Nielsen) who spoke Danish, English, Spanish, German, and enough French “to read a menu,” as he would often say. He instilled in me a love for languages, and a perfectionism that is both a blessing and a curse.
Since my early teens, I have been bilingual. In high school, I always got top grades in English (as a foreign language), and my parents always had Newsweek, Time and Reader’s Digest at home. I read them all. After I finished high school in Caracas, my father sent me to the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey to do 12th grade again, with the hope that I would go to college in the U.S. I remember the day I realized I had been dreaming in English, and thinking I was finally fluent. While I had already been able to read and write almost anything in English, it took that year in New Jersey to allow me to understand full-speed spoken English, and to make myself understood verbally.

PHASE 2
After Lawrenceville, I decided to return home and started studying architecture at Universidad Simón Bolívar, where I took more English, including “English for Architecture.” I also took electives in French and German, and spent an entire summer traveling by myself in Germany. I even tried Japanese for a while.
Once I graduated from architecture school, I spent three years practicing professionally, part-time in my own firm with five architect friends, and part-time for a builder, actually making money. We did a variety of projects, mostly housing, entered and won design competitions, and had a lot of fun.

PHASE 3
I then decided to pursue graduate studies, which brought me to Cornell University (and Ithaca, New York). I pursued a graduate degree in Architectural History, took additional classes in German, Italian and Danish, and got to defend my thesis. Soon after, I had a full-time job, learning how to be an architect “the American way.”
I have worked for three medium-to-large architectural firms, designing many kinds of projects, although the majority have been public schools. During most of that time, I earned a little extra money, evenings and weekends, doing translations, and proofreading the work of other translators.

PHASE 4
I now have my own business, combining the things I love: architecture and languages. I can, and will, offer traditional architectural services. I can also translate myriad different topics from English into Spanish, and several from Spanish into English. And I can catch a typo in any of those languages. The intersection of these three skills seems especially attractive to me, and I hope to become the “go-to” guy for U.S. architects and developers doing work in Spanish-speaking countries, and for architects and developers from those countries doing work here.

SOBRE MÍ (IN ENGLISH ABOVE)

FASE 1
Yo nací y crecí en Caracas, Venezuela. Mi madre venezolana (de apellido Palacios) se casó con un danés (Nielsen) que hablaba danés, inglés, español, alemán y suficiente francés como “para leer un menú” como le gustaba decir. Él me inculcó el amor por los idiomas, y el deseo por un perfeccionismo que es a la vez una virtud y una maldición.
Desde muy joven, he sido bilingüe. En la escuela secundaria siempre obtuve las mejores calificaciones en inglés (como idioma extranjero) y mis padres siempre tenían revistas en inglés como Newsweek, Time y Reader’s Digest en casa, que yo siempre leía. Después de graduarme de bachiller en Caracas, mi padre me envió a cursar el último año de “high school” en una escuela en Lawrenceville, en el estado de Nueva Jersey, con la esperanza de que yo estudiaría luego en una universidad norteamericana. Aún recuerdo el día que desperté dándome cuenta de que había estado soñando en inglés, y que por lo tanto era verdaderamente bilingüe. Aunque ya hacía mucho que podía leer y escribir casi cualquier cosa en inglés, tuve que pasar ese año en Nueva Jersey para poder comprender el inglés hablado a velocidad normal, y para que otros me entendieran a mí.

FASE 2
Después de Lawrenceville, decidí regresar a Venezuela y comenzar mis estudios de arquitectura en la Universidad Simón Bolívar. Tomé cursos adicionales de inglés, incluyendo “Inglés para arquitectos”, así como electivas en francés y alemán. Hasta intenté aprender japonés.
Una vez graduado como arquitecto, ejercí la profesión por tres años, a tiempo parcial en mi propia compañía con cinco socios, y también con una compañía constructora donde sí me pagaban. Trabajé en varios tipos de proyectos, sobre todo de vivienda, participamos en concursos y recibimos premios, y nos divertimos mucho.

FASE 3
Decidí continuar mis estudios, y vine a la Universidad de Cornell, en Ithaca, estado de Nueva York, a estudiar Historia de la arquitectura. Estudié también alemán, italiano y danés, y llegué a defender mi tesis de postgrado. Poco después obtuve mi primer empleo en los Estados Unidos, y aprendí cómo ser un arquitecto “a lo americano”.
He trabajado para tres compañías medianas y grandes, diseñando todo tipo de proyectos, aunque la mayoría han sido escuelas públicas. Al mismo tiempo, para ganar un dinerito adicional, he estado haciendo o corrigiendo traducciones muchas noches y fines de semana.

FASE 4
Ahora tengo mi propia empresa, combinando las actividades que tanto me gustan: arquitectura e idiomas. Puedo ofrecer servicios tradicionales de arquitectura, y también traducir numerosos tópicos del inglés al español (y algunos del español al inglés). También puedo detectar con facilidad un error de imprenta o falta de ortografía en ambos idiomas. La intersección de estas tres aptitudes me entusiasma mucho, y espero convertirme en “el experto” favorito de arquitectos y promotores con proyectos en países de habla hispana, y de arquitectos y promotores de esos países con proyectos en los Estados Unidos.
