John Lester, un amigo cercano, me comentó que había visto días atrás en el Carriage House Centro de las Artes, una interesante exposición colectiva organizada por el gobierno español, con motivo del octonario del Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., titulada inevitablemente “I have a dream”. Mi buen amigo siempre entusiasta de la pintura, había quedado fascinado -según sus palabras-, por un cuadro de gran formato y extraordinaria belleza. Casualmente a los pocos días tenía que hacer unas gestiones cerca del Carriage House, por lo que al terminar y a pesar de lo gélido del día decidí acercarme un momento a ver la muestra.
La exposición era bastante irregular, con demasiados artistas y sin que se viera un claro nexo de unión en muchas de las obras con la figura de Luther King. Era una simple muestra homenaje sin mayor discurso que la reunión de una serie de nombres para conmemorar la efeméride. Había trabajos obviamente de gran calidad, no obstante, sobre toda la obra allí exhibida sobresalía de forma rotunda -según mi criterio-, una pintura soberbia de un artista español llamado Ciria.
Aquel cuadro y el nombre del autor se quedaron grabados en mi memoria durante toda la semana. Volví de nuevo a ver la exposición, para comprobar de forma más pausada si el entusiasmo que me había suscitado dicha obra, era contagiado por mi amigo o si aquella pintura ciertamente tenía un poder de comunicación irrefrenable. De nuevo ante la pintura, la idea de –un verdadero comunicador- asaltó mi mente. En la Fundación me comentaron que el artista vivía desde hacía años en la ciudad de Nueva York, situación que inexplicablemente me alegró, aunque no pudieron darme sus datos. No quería perder tiempo y necesitaba ver más trabajos de dicho artista. Me conecté a Internet y conseguí su e-mail, mandándole un breve mensaje en el que le daba la enhorabuena por aquella pintura. Con los artistas nunca se sabe sus posibles reacciones. Sorprendentemente, Ciria con rapidez me contestó un mensaje extremadamente amable dándome las gracias por mis palabras e invitándome tímidamente a visitar si quería su taller en Greenwich Village.
El taller de Ciria es un espacio muy amplio, abierto con grandes ventanales al este, frente a una especie de pequeña plazuela y un jardín rodeado de los edificios de residencias de los profesores del NYU, ubicación certeramente estratégica que dota al loft de gran cantidad de luz. A pesar de tratarse a su vez de su vivienda, no hay rincón que no esté dedicado a la pintura. Una mesa al fondo de la zona de trabajo llena de botes, brochas, tubos de óleo, cubos, herramientas…, un pequeño árbol junto a la ventana. Después lonas protegiendo el suelo hasta la pared sur, donde las manchas y marcas del muro delatan el punto más frecuentado en las horas de trabajo. Pinturas terminadas apiladas verticalmente apoyadas sobre los gruesos pilares, así como gran cantidad de bastidores con lienzos vírgenes o enfondados. Una amplia zona central con suelo de losetas de pizarra negra que culmina en una enorme mesa rodeada de cómodas y generosas sillas de forja, ante una cocina que se despliega completamente abierta de espaldas al oeste. Otra gran columna con obras apoyadas de gran formato, y frente a ella un espacio de estar con dos enfrentados sofás negros con una mesa del mismo color en el centro. Al fondo la televisión y los equipos de música. En el ambiente suena “La flauta mágica” de Mozart. A la izquierda una pared de armarios blancos y un biombo también blanco que cubre el acceso a los dormitorios y aseos. En ambos dormitorios más pilas de cuadros cubriendo las paredes, y una mesa de cristal desordenada llena de papeles y un ordenador portátil.
Desde la óptica de la pintura contemporánea, la obra de Ciria no resulta altisonante ni dotada de una “oratoria” especial. Hay algo en su trabajo que llega incluso a suscitar melancolía. Y sin embargo, un análisis de los recursos utilizados por este artista dotan a su lenguaje de un aura, de una comunicación, de un convencimiento que conecta inmediatamente con el espectador. Una intensidad que conquista la mirada sin grandilocuencia, una pintura de aspecto azaroso donde cada color está “cosido” al siguiente con bordes vibrantes, rotos o arrastrados. Un aparente azar que se adivina perfectamente calculado, extremadamente bien resuelto y que otorga a las composiciones de una frescura y contundencia nada habitual. La comparación con otros “abstractos” de este momento que tienden a lo enfático y a la magnificencia, se resuelve en Ciria sin una búsqueda de impresionar a las audiencias, ni de encandilar con la superposición de capas y capas de materia pictórica, de horas y horas de trabajo, de inútil paciencia. Su pintura se adivina estar resuelta con agilidad y en pocas sesiones, directa y orquestada desde la cabeza, no con el gesto o la pincelada reiterativa. Hay en la pintura de este artista una desproporcionada energía interior, que creo coincide con su carácter –Ciria se mueve muy deprisa y de forma certera-, es de suponer por tanto que su obra es una prolongación de su propia personalidad.
En nuestras conversaciones posteriores, Ciria nunca ha pretendido exhibirse con una enorme charlatanería ni necesita convencernos de lo magistral de su trabajo. Simplemente mantiene ese tono atinado de las palabras estrictamente acertadas y necesarias. Para hablar de arte, hay que saber de arte. Para llegar a sintetizar a lo básico y elemental aquellas cuestiones de mayor complejidad historiográfica, teórica o conceptual, hay que estar dotado de un gran conocimiento de la materia, de memoria y de capacidad de relación. Escuchar a Ciria –volvemos a encontrar una coincidencia con su pintura-, es disfrutar de unas ideas claras y bien trabadas, es como atender como si fuéramos niños a una narración o “cuento” lleno de magia. Pero, además, Ciria no se conforma con saber de su medio –la pintura- sino que nos sorprende con una profusa acumulación de datos de todo tipo de manifestaciones artísticas y de creadores de muy diferente procedencia. Y todo ello con un nivel de inglés que el artista se queja de ser insuficiente para explicarse debidamente y ciertamente pronunciando algunas palabras de manera incorrecta. Supongo que oírle hablar en su propia lengua, el español, tiene que resultar absolutamente placentero.
Ante mis ojos, sobre la mesa, Ciria empieza a depositar algunas de sus últimas publicaciones. Todas ellas catálogos de exposiciones que son en realidad magníficos libros. No conozco otro caso de artista que, a la edad de Ciria, tenga tal profusión de publicaciones de calidad. Le pido al artista que me los ordene por su antigüedad, y mientras charlamos, voy recorriendo visualmente hoja tras hoja todas las pinturas que salen reproducidas. No hay que buscar en la obra de este artista maravillosos juegos de artificio, ni enrevesadas y gratuitas piruetas pictóricas. La pintura de Ciria consigue empatizar inmediatamente con quien se coloca frente a ella, y lo hace con la máxima intensidad. La pintura se funde con la mirada del espectador en un gesto íntimo y personal, como si él que mira formara parte del mismo cuerpo pictórico en una extraña mezcla entre contundencia y antítesis. Unos cuadros dotados de una intensa fe, que delatan la vigencia y la necesidad de la pintura en nuestros días -aún se puede seguir pintando-. Ante el supuesto final de la pintura todavía cabe la esperanza, frente a la casi total exclusión del medio, en su forma tradicional en las grandes citas y bienales, se yergue una pintura altiva que pide calma y ofrece posibilidad. Una comunicación perfectamente clara y concisa.
Pero Ciria no habla en un espacio reducido, su trabajo pide hueco ante las masas. En el MoMA de Nueva York, hace escasamente unos meses se inauguró la bellísima exposición de Miró “Anti-pinturas”. Algo en las obras de José Manuel Ciria me hace pensar que Miró, si viviera hoy, pintaría este tipo de cuadros. Hay un componente netamente “español” y común en la obra de ambos artistas, una forma de distribuir los espacios y de organizar las composiciones, una atmósfera envolvente, la relación y juego entre el fondo/s y la figura/s, una sabia economía de medios, eso que en España denominan como lo “Mediterráneo”, una paleta de color que puede reducirse a lo monocromático o desplegarse en todos los colores imaginables, un “desnudarse”... Una comunicación aplastante.
Al mismo tiempo, Ciria consigue en sus obras un efecto de intimidad. Algo similar a poder brindar a cada mirada de un carácter personalizado, no estamos ante una pintura sobrehumana sino ante una experiencia cercana y excepcional. Una voz fuerte y aguda que al llegar al oído parece convertirse en un susurro. Una unidad íntima que se establece desde la primera mirada con la superficie coloreada, una pintura que si pudiera hablar nos daría las gracias por colocarnos ante ella y nos revela lentamente, al mismo tiempo que va atrapándonos, todo un despliegue de texturas, de pequeños “accidentes”, de goteos y salpicaduras, de trazos y encuentros, de líneas y volúmenes.
Una pintura, la de Ciria, que contiene toda la Historia de la pintura, todo conocimiento, toda “picardía”, toda experimentación, que parece ir contándonos como ha llegado a conformarse y ha llegado hasta aquí, que nos habla de lo barroco y de lo mínimo, que se personaliza en infinidad de facetas para establecer un vínculo íntimo entre la razón y la emoción. Una pintura que se asegura de un currículum brillante, sin caer en lo típico de los pintores de moda alejados muchas veces de la realidad de su propio medio de expresión. Una renovación constante de registros y series, de iconografías y cuestionamientos formales. Ciria demuestra que su trayectoria es la de un artista que, emergiendo del anonimato común, se comprometió con el medio pictórico para contribuir a transformarlo, tejiendo los componentes emocionales con el análisis racional, ofreciendo multitud de propuestas y soluciones a los largo de los últimos años.
Volveremos a esta relación entre emoción y razón, entre vínculo sentimental y análisis racional. Pero ahora mantengámonos en los recursos con que Ciria intensifica el lazo de intimidad con el espectador. Evidentemente la masa de su público es anónima, pero consigue personalizar la comunicación de su pintura incluyendo ingredientes recuperados de la tradición, no solamente moderna sino clásica, que actúan de catalizadores de su discurso, es decir, cualquier espectador puede encontrar en la obra de Ciria algo que le resulte familiar, me aventuro a decir que aún tratándose de personas con escaso conocimiento o interés en arte. De un solo golpe de vista apreciamos en muchas de las composiciones de este creador, la convivencia de lo geométrico y lo gestual –ya tenemos aquí dos tradiciones modernas-, una perfección del dibujo -o la estructura, como le gusta decir a Ciria- que conecta con la clasicidad, conexión que se acrecienta cuando podemos observar claramente en infinidad de trabajos una preocupación por el recorrido de la luz dentro del plano pictórico, y un afán por generar volúmenes plausibles aunque nos enfrentemos a “cuerpos” abstractos. El óleo, pigmento clásico por antonomasia, junto a cinta de enmascarar, líneas depuradas y dotadas de elegancia al lado de manchas y “drippings”, perfectos degradados junto a salpicaduras y “borrones” azarosos. Una utilización del color que viaja entre la sensibilidad y sofisticación extrema y, su uso de forma intemperada y “brutal”.
Además de estos ingredientes citados, la obra última de Ciria –creo que prácticamente la totalidad de su producción neoyorquina-, se mueve en un terreno de ambigüedad sublime. En su taller he tenido el privilegio de poder ver piezas de carácter totalmente abstracto, como aquella de mi primer encuentro –Flowers (for MLK), 2008-, junto a obras con un claro sesgo figurativo al menos en lo que se refiere al contorno o silueta de las figuras, y por supuesto su serie de personajes del Malevich tardío –un verdadero deleite de investigación y buenos resultados-. Pero, me repito –según mi criterio- lo verdaderamente extraordinario, sin desdecir un ápice del resto de su producción, es cuando Ciria nos presenta “algo” que no es ni abstracto ni figurativo, o que son ambas cosas. Este artista ha conseguido alcanzar en múltiples trabajos un territorio donde los defensores de lo puramente abstracto lo pasaran mal, de la misma forma que aquellos inclinados únicamente a lo figurativo. ¿Se puede ser abstracto y figurativo al mismo tiempo? Vuelvo a recordar a Miró y a unos pocos elegidos. ¿Composiciones abstractas o monigotes? Máscaras de su serie “Schandenmaske” que alcanzan una ambigüedad formal que congela nuestras miradas suspendidas en el limbo dictado por los cuadros. Monigotes cabeza abajo pudiera ser otro de sus recursos, es decir, subrayar el carácter “probablemente” reconocible de la composición mediante su descolocación premeditada.
Por momentos pareciera que la pintura de Ciria tuviera una vida independiente de su creador, como si Ciria no tuviera nada que ver con sus cualidades o méritos. Una demostración de que la obra alcanza un estadio singularizado, al tiempo que nos muestra la facilidad con que es resuelta. También una pintura que se convierte en promesa, un conquistar –o mejor dicho- reconquistar el sueño y la memoria. Composiciones que se quedan pegadas al cerebro y que necesitamos volver y volver a mirar. Un apóstrofe que adopta un tono peculiar en el que lo lírico y lo épico se confunden o se nos muestran al unísono. Una búsqueda alcanzada de lo improbable. La posibilidad sin límites extendiéndose ante nuestra mirada, viajando entre los elementos concretos “reconocibles” y el guión más exigente y mesiánico. Claridad, simultánea a enorme profundidad.
El pintor combina con gran talento la declamación de lo lírico y la argumentación didáctica. El lenguaje de Ciria, que atraviesa sin “esfuerzo” todas sus series es absolutamente reconocible, es siempre limpio, transparente, “pedagógico”. Pero a la vez contiene todos los recursos para suscitar la emoción. Para suscitar algo muy parecido a la catarsis. A dicha catarsis nos eleva frecuentemente usando procedimientos de las “viejas” tradiciones –acumula las demostraciones y adjetivos, “frases” usurpadas con inteligencia o elementos anecdóticos enraizados en nuestra memoria visual-, amplificación discursiva, gradación atmosférica, anáforas, repeticiones léxicas o paralelismos sintácticos. Y todo ello mostrado con una apariencia de simplicidad y desnudez, de frescura y celebración. Ante el espectador educado, la catarsis es la culminación del encuentro entre la obra de arte y la mirada sensible. Es la fijación y transformación de nuestro sentido visual en el regocijo y la esperanza, en donde encontramos una imagen que nos atrapa y consigue conmovernos.
Citas de la Historia del Arte y recursos arraigados en la memoria colectiva que permiten recrear “un clima familiar”, una cercanía. Lo emocionalmente próximo junto a un discurso analítico altamente racionalizado. Aquí asistimos a la misma actitud que cuando el político recurre al interés de la mayoría y al patriotismo, recogiendo a su vez las necesidades reales de las minorías; o a la del predicador que apela a la religiosidad y la fe de aquellos que ya forman parte de su iglesia, buscando a su vez más devotos. Convencer al convencido y al que lo será. El objetivo, decíamos, es conseguir un clima de intimidad entre obra y públicos, puesto que estos últimos pueden demandar “preferencias” o cuestiones absolutamente dispares, a ello, la obra de Ciria contesta altivamente ofreciendo un portentoso compendio. La esperanza de que la pintura siga, como en el caso de Ciria, siendo un alarde de cultura y conocimiento, de comunicación y excepcionalidad.

My close friend John Lester told me that a few days back he had seen an interesting collective exhibition at the Carriage House Center for the Arts organized by the Spanish government to mark 80 years since the birth Dr. Martin Luther King, inevitably entitled “I Have a Dream.” My good friend, ever the painting enthusiast, had been fascinated by a large-format painting of extraordinary beauty. It just so happened that days later I had some business down at the Carriage House, so when I finished up, despite the frigid weather that day, I decided to swing by for a moment to catch the exhibition.
The showing was quite uneven, with too many artists and without a clear connection drawn between many of the works and the figure of Dr. King. It was a simple tribute exhibit with no greater rationale than the gathering of a series of names to mark the occasion. There were works that were obviously of great quality, but among all the material shown there was one which clearly stood out in my view: a masterful painting by a Spanish artist named Ciria.
That painting and the name of its creator were etched into my memory and came back to me all week. I went back to the exhibit to take it in more slowly and to see if it was just that my friend’s artistic enthusiasm had rubbed off and made me so keen on the work, or if that painting really possessed an irresistible power of communication. Once again, standing before the painting, I was overcome by the feeling that I was in the presence of a true communicator. At the Foundation they told me that the artist had been living in New York for years, a fact which inexplicably cheered me, although they couldn´t give me his contact information. I didn´t want to waste time and I needed to see more works of his. I got on the Internet and I found his email, sending him a brief message congratulating him on that painting. When it comes to artists, you never know how they are going to react. Surprisingly, Ciria soon answered me with an extremely friendly response, thanking me for my kind words and timidly inviting me, if I wished, to visit his studio in Greenwich Village.
Ciria’s studio is very spacious and open with large windows giving out to the east, opposite a sort of little courtyard garden surrounded by the residential buildings of the NYU faculty, a decidedly strategic location which gives the loft a great deal of light. Even though it’s also his home, there is not one corner of it which isn´t dedicated to painting. There’s a table at the back of the work area full of jars, brushes, tubes of oil paint, tubs, tools… and a small tree next to the window. Then there are tarps protecting the floor up to the south wall, where stains and marks reveal where the artist has spent the most time working away. Finished works are stacked up vertically on the thick pillars, along with a large number of easels with canvases either untouched or stored away. An ample central area with a black slate floor leads to an enormous table surrounded by comfortable, roomy, wrought-iron chairs before a kitchen which stretches out, totally open, with its back to the east. There’s another large column with large-format works on it and facing it a living room with two black sofas across from each other and a table of the same color in the middle. In the back, the television and stereo. Mozart´s "The Magic Flute" fills the air. On the left a wall of white closets and a white screen covering the way to the bedrooms and bathrooms. In both bedrooms more piles of paintings covering up the walls, and a cluttered glass table full of papers and a laptop.
From the point of view of contemporary painting, Ciria's work doesn´t seem high-flown nor to feature any special "voice." There is something in his work which even evokes melancholy. And yet, an analysis of the resources used by this artist gives his language an aura, a communicative capacity and a conviction which immediately strikes the viewer. An intensity which catches your eye and holds your attention without any grandiloquence. Painting with a random appearance in which each color is “sewn” into the next with vibrant, broken or dragged edges. An apparent randomness which proves to be perfectly calculated and extremely well executed, injecting his creations with a very unique freshness and force. While other “abstract” artists today tend towards the emphatic and overstated grandeur, Ciria refrains from seeking to impress viewers or dazzle them by overlapping layer after layer of pictorial material through hours and hours of work and fruitless patience. His painting seems to be dispatched adroitly and in just a few sessions, directly, and orchestrated from the head, not with empty gestures and repetitive brush strokes. There is in this artist's paintings an extraordinary interior energy, which I believe coincides with his character, as Ciria the man moves very quickly and decisively. It is only natural for his work to be a prolongation of his own personality.
In our subsequent conversations Ciria has never come off as a charlatan, nor does he need to convince anyone that his work is truly masterful. He simply maintains his typically exact and penetrating tone marked by essential and accurate words. To talk about art, you have to know about art. To be able to synthesize the basic and the elemental with elements of greater historiographic, theoretical or conceptual complexity, one must possess an extensive knowledge of the subject, in addition to a fine memory and a capacity to relate things. Listening to Ciria – once again discovering a parallel with his work - is to enjoy clear and well-crafted ideas, like attending, as if we were children, the telling of a “story” full of magic. But Ciria doesn´t just settle for knowing about his medium – painting - but also surprises you with a massive command of information on all kinds of artistic manifestations and creators from all corners. And all of this with a level of English which the artist complains is insufficient to explain himself properly, as he certainly pronounces some words incorrectly. I imagine that hearing him speak in his own language, Spanish, must be absolutely delightful.
Before my eyes, on the table, Ciria begins to deposit some of his latest publications, all of them catalogues of exhibitions which are really magnificent books. I don´t know any case of an artist who at Ciria’s age boasts such an array of quality publications. I ask the artist to order them chronologically and while we chat I glance over page after page of the paintings reproduced. In this artist's work you don´t have to look for marvelous games of artifice, nor intricate or indulgent pictorial pirouettes. Ciria’s painting manages to immediately win over whoever takes it in, and with the greatest intensity. His painting melds with the viewer's gaze in an intimate and personal exchange, as if he formed part of the pictorial body in a strange mixture of power and antithesis. Some paintings feature an intense faith, which project the validity of and the need for painting in our time - one can still keep painting. Before the supposed end of painting, there is still room for hope. Before the almost complete exclusion of the medium in its traditional form and at the great events and biennales, a bold painting style stands forth which demands calm and bursts with possibilities. A perfectly clear and concise form of communication.
But Ciria isn´t speaking to just a small segment. His work begs to be seen by the masses. Just a few months ago New York's MoMa opened the beautiful Miró "Anti-paintings” exhibition. Something about José Manuel Ciria’s works makes me think that Miró, were he alive today, would paint these kinds of works. There is a thoroughly "Spanish" element common to both artists, a way of distributing space and organizing their work, an atmosphere that envelopes you, the relationship and play between the background/s and the figure/s, a shrewd economy of resources, what in Spain they call the “Mediterranean," a palette of colors which can be reduced to the monochromatic or fan out to deploy every imaginable hue, a kind of “undressing”… a devastating form of communication.
At the same time Ciria achieves an effect of intimacy in his works, as if he were able to infuse each gaze with a personalized character. This is no over-the-top approach to painting, but rather an intimate and exceptional experience. A strong and sharp voice which seems to dwindle to a whisper upon reaching the ear. An intimate unity established from the first glance at the colored surface. A painting which, if it could talk, would thank us for standing before it and which slowly reveals to us, at the same it traps us, an entire array of textures, of small “accidents,” drippings and splashes, strokes and confluences, lines and volumes.
Ciria’s painting is one which contains within it the entire History of painting, all the knowledge, the “mischievousness," the experimentation. It seems to tell us how it came to be, how it came down to us today, speaking to us of the Baroque and of minimalism, personalizing itself in an infinity of facets to establish an intimate link between reason and emotion. A painting style which assuredly comes with a brilliant résumé, and without falling into the trap of those trendy painters too often removed from the reality of their own medium of expression. A constant renovation of tones and series, of iconographies and formal questionings. Ciria demonstrates that his trajectory is that of an artist who, emerging from common anonymity, committed himself to the pictorial medium in order to help transform it, interweaving emotional elements with rational analysis while offering a multitude of ideas and solutions over the course of recent years.
We will revisit this relationship between emotion and reason, between sentimental ties and rational analysis. But now let´s turn to the resources through which Ciria intensifies his intimate link with viewers. Obviously his public is generally anonymous, but he manages to personalize his painting’s communication, incorporating elements drawn from tradition, not only modern but classic, which function as catalysts of his perspective. That is, any spectator can find in Ciria’s work something familiar to him, even, I would dare say, people with little knowledge of or interest in art. With just one glance we can appreciate in many of this creator’s works a harmonious merging of the geometrical and the gestural (already two modern traditions) and a perfection in drawing – or structure, as Ciria prefers to call it – which connects with classicness and grows, as we can clearly see in countless works a great concern for the use of light within the pictorial plane and a passion for generating plausible volumes even when dealing with abstract “bodies.” Oil, the quintessential, classic pigment, along with masking tape, pure and elegant lines next to blots and drippings, perfect elements blurred along with splashes and random “erasures.” A use of color which oscillates between extreme sensibility and sophistication, and his generous and “brutal” use of form.
In addition to the aforementioned elements, Ciria's last work - and I think almost all of his work produced in New York –is imbued with a sublime ambiguity. In his studio I’ve had the pleasure of being able to see pieces of a totally abstract nature, like that of my first meeting – Flowers (for MLK), 2008 – along with other works with a representational twist, at least as related to the contour or silhouette of the figure. And then there is, of course, his series of late Malevich characters, a genuine treat of investigation and good results. But I repeat myself. In my view the truly extraordinary thing, without downplaying one bit of the rest of his production, is when Ciria presents us with “something” which is neither abstract nor representational, or which is both at the same time. This artist has managed to create in multiple works a realm in which defenders of the purely abstract would cringe, but so would those only sympathetic to representational works. Can one be abstract and representational at the same time? I would evoke Miró again and a few other standouts. Abstract works or doodle figures? The masks from his “Schandenmaske” series achieve a formal ambiguity which freezes our gaze, suspended in the very limbo captured in the paintings. Upside down doodle figures could be another of his resources, that is, underscoring the ambiguously recognizable character of the work through its premeditated displacement.
At times it would seem that Ciria’s painting has a life of its own, apart from that of its creator, as if Ciria had nothing to do with its qualities or merits, a demonstration of the fact that the work achieves a unique level while at the same time revealing to us the grace with which it is executed. It is also a painting style which becomes a promise, a conquest or, better put, a reconquest of dreams and memory. Works which stick in one's mind and which we need to look at again and again. Creations which adopt a unique tone in which the lyric and the epic are fused or appear to us in unison. A successful quest for the improbable. Limitless possibility stretching out before us, spanning concrete "recognizable" elements and the most demanding and messianic roles. Simultaneous clarity and great depth.
The painter artfully manages to deliver both the lyric and didactic argumentation. Ciria’s language, which effortlessly runs through all of his series, is absolutely recognizable, always clean, transparent, pedagogical. But at the same time it contains all the requisite resources to provoke emotion. To awaken something very much like catharsis. He often provokes this catharsis in us through methods from the “old" traditions – he accumulates demonstrations and adjectives, cleverly usurped "phrases", or anecdotal elements ingrained in our visual memory - discursive amplification, atmospheric graduation, anaphors, lexical repetitions or syntactic parallelisms. And all of this presented with an appearance of simplicity and nakedness, freshness and celebration. To the educated viewer, the catharsis is the culmination of the meeting between the work of art and the sensitive eye. It is the fixing and transformation of our visual sense in exultation and hope in which we find an image which transfixes and moves us.
Moments in Art History and resources embedded in the collective memory which allow us to recreate a certain “familiar atmosphere," an intimacy. The emotionally close along with a highly-rationalized analytical discourse. Here we have the same attitude we see when the politician appeals to the interest of the majority and patriotism, while also taking note of the real needs of the minority. Or that of the preacher who appeals to the religiosity and faith of those who already form part of his church, reaching out at the same time for more members for his flock. Convincing those who are already convinced and those who will be. The objective, as we were saying, is to create an atmosphere of intimacy between the work and the public. As the latter can have “preferences” or totally divergent reactions to it, Ciria’s work responds boldly, offering a potent collection which holds out hope for painting to continue standing as a pillar of culture, knowledge, communication and exceptionalism.
Spanish to English: Social security systems
Source text - Spanish La experiencia española moderna en previsión social complementaria al sistema público de Seguridad Social nació en la etapa final del franquismo mediante acuerdos laborales que formalmente era de DB, aunque prácticamente eran de cuantía indeterminada. Salvo contadas excepciones, y durante muchos años, no se aplicaron los principios contables internacionales.
A partir de 1989 se inicia una exteriorización a sistemas independientes de las empresas (Planes de Pensiones y Seguros Colectivos) con dos etapas: una voluntaria hasta 1999; y, otra desde ese año que resulta obligatoria para la mayoría de las empresas: los fondos internos están prohibidos. La legislación provocó una renegociación de los compromisos existentes hasta llegar a casi un 90% de modelos DC para jubilación, con DB mínimas garantizadas en fallecimiento e invalidez de empleados. Los beneficiarios existentes permanecieron en el sistema de origen.
Tras 20 años de experiencia en la exteriorización cabe preguntarse si hemos venido de Guatemala (para las empresas) a Guatepeor (para los empleados), hasta el punto que la actual crisis económica ha puesto de manifiesto la relevancia de los ciclos económicos en los modelos DC y la necesidad de buscar soluciones a través de alcanzar una madurez con modelos híbridos que compaginen los intereses de empresas y trabajadores. En la actualidad, ya han comenzado negociaciones para redefinir los modelos en importantes empresas.
Con la experiencia laboral del autor (más de 30 años entre sistema público y privado) y su práctica docente en diferentes Universidades, se presentará:
(1) Un balance cuantitativo y cualitativo de la previsión en España, con especial énfasis en sus puntos débiles: ciclos económicos, nivel de cobertura de contingencias poco probables (fallecimiento e invalidez), políticas clónicas de inversiones, movilidad, globalización, etc.
(2) Propuestas sobre las características que los modelos híbridos deberían tener en España para su potencial generalización.
Translation - English The modern Spanish experience in the area of social welfare complementing the public Social Security system can be traced back to the final stage under Franco in the form of labor agreements which formally were based on DB, although in practice they were of indeterminate amounts. With just a few exceptions, for many years international accounting principles were not applied to them.
Beginning in 1989 externalization began to systems independent of companies (Pension Plans and Collective Insurance) in two stages: a voluntary stage until 1999, and a second one dating from that year which was mandatory for most companies: internal funds were prohibited. This legislation led to a renegotiation of existing commitments until hitting almost 90% of DC retirement models, with minimum DB guarantees in the event of employee deaths or invalidity. Existing beneficiaries remained within the original system.
After 20 years of experience with externalization, it is worth asking ourselves if we have gone from the frying pan (for companies) into the fire (for employees) as the current economic crisis has highlighted the relevance of economic cycles in DC models and the need to seek solutions by developing hybrid models which strike a balance and serve the interests of both businesses and workers. Currently negotiations have already begun to redefine models in major companies.
The author will bring to bear his professional background (over 30 years in the public and private systems) as well as his teaching experience at different universities to present the following:
(1) A quantitative and qualitative assessment of social welfare in Spain, with special emphasis placed upon its weak points: economic cycles, levels of coverage for improbable contingencies (death or invalidity), clone investment policies, mobility, globalization, etc.
(2) Proposals regarding the characteristics which hybrid models should feature in Spain for their potential proliferation.
