Source text - English Waterstudio is an architectural studio with a difference. The firm work exclusively in waterbased designs and floating structures. Koen Olthuis, the founder of the studio, is acutely aware of the problems of rising water levels, especially in his country, The Netherlands, where 50 percent of the land is only 1 meter above sea level and 27 percent actually below level. As a consequence much of the country is built on polders–parcels of land reclaimed from the sea–protected by a complex systems of dykes, canals, and pumps. However, it is forecasted that by 2100 the sea will rise by a further six meters. So as Olthuis says,“We can’t keep extending our cities with tower blocks above. And the rising water level is swallowing up more and more land. If we were to stop pumping round-the-clock, we would be underwater within 42 hours.”
One of the first buildings Waterstudio made was a villa in Aaslmeer, a region that was particularly badly hit during North Sea flood of 1953. As the council stipulated that the building could be no more than 4 meters above water level the architects built a floor under water. The two-story villa was prefabricated in a factory and floated to its final destination next to a 900 square meter garden on the shores of Lake Westeinderplassen. It floats on a hollow box-like concrete core–a system patented by the studio–and like a ship is moored to the bottom of the lake and the land. In order to give the house stability it was designed to be symmetrical. As Olthuis puts it,”We build to make you feel as if you’re on terra firma no matter how strong the wind.”
Built for a flower farmer, his wife, and son, this rectangular 2-bedroom villa has 300 square meters of living space and a roof terrace. The client did not like the idea of sleeping under water so the bedrooms and bathroom are located above water on the main floor. On the same level are a living room and kitchen, separated by a modern fireplace. A green, glass staircase–part of the water theme–leads to the lower floor where there is a lounge, 20-seater cinema, and storage space. Both inside and outside, the design is intended to be streamlined and “timeless”. The black aluminium exterior helps it blend in with the water landscape, while the reflective materials used in the interior–chrome metal kitchen surfaces and polished granite floors–continue the reflective theme. Glass doors, which open directly onto the lake, are mirrored to give privacy and increase reflectivity. The overall effect is “like a piece of rock that is carefully shaped by a sculptor.”

Der Gründer des Studios, Koen Olthuis, ist sich des Problems der steigenden Wasserspiegel sehr bewusst, insbesondere in seinem eigenen Land: In den Niederlanden befinden sich 50 Prozent des Landes nur 1 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel und 27 Prozent gar darunter. Eines der ersten von Waterstudio entworfenen Gebäude war eine Villa in Aalsmeer, einer von der Nordseeflut im Jahr 1953 besonders hart betroffenen Region. Da die Kommunalbehörden vorschrieben, dass der Bau nicht mehr als 4 Meter über dem Wasserspiegel liegen dürfe, legten die Architekten ein Stockwerk unter Wasser an. Die zweigeschossige Villa wurde in einer Fabrik vorgefertigt und anschließend auf dem Wasserweg zu ihrem endgültigen Standort neben einem 900 Quadratmeter großen Garten an den Ufern der Westeinderplassen transportiert. Sie schwimmt auf einem hohlen, kastenförmigen Betonkern – einem von Waterstudio patentierten System – und ist wie ein Schiff auf dem Grund des Sees und am Land festgezurrt. Der Entwurf des Hauses ist symmetrisch, um ihm mehr Stabilität zu verleihen. Olthuis sagt: „Wir haben so gebaut, dass Sie sich wie auf dem Festland fühlen, ganz gleich wie stark der Wind bläst.“
Die für einen Blumenzüchter, seine Frau und beider Sohn erbaute rechteckige Zweizimmervilla verfügt über 300 Quadratmeter Wohnraum und eine Dachterrasse. Da der Kunde nicht gerne unter Wasser schlafen wollte, befinden sich die Schlafräume und das Badezimmer über Wasser im Erdgeschoss. Auf diesem Stockwerk liegen außerdem ein Wohnzimmer und eine Küche, die von einem modernen Kamin getrennt werden. Eine grüne Treppe aus Glas - eine Fortsetzung des Wasserthemas - führt ins Untergeschoss, wo sich ein Wohn- und Aufenthaltsraum, ein Kino mit 20 Sitzen und Stauraum befinden. Das Design soll innen wie außen windschnittig und „zeitlos“ wirken. Die Außenwand aus schwarzem Aluminium lässt das Gebäude mit der Wasserlandschaft verschmelzen, während die spiegelnden Materialien im Inneren – die Metalloberflächen aus Chrom in der Küche und die Böden aus poliertem Granit - das Thema der Spiegelung fortsetzen.
Die Glastüren, die unmittelbar auf den See hinausführen, sind zur Wahrung der Privatsphäre und für weitere Reflektionen verspiegelt. Die Gesamtwirkung lässt sich beschreiben als „ein Stück Fels, das von einem Bildhauer mit großer Sorgfalt bearbeitet wurde.“
