Detailed field: Journalism
Source text - English
Translation - Arabic Egypt: Aging Does Not Actually Mean Senility (March 1, 2006)
(Article in Arabic)
We should not mix the meaning of aging with that of senility, for not all old persons experience "senility". In fact, such aspects of senility as the endless repetition of the same old stories, the failure to recognize sons and daughters and other family members, slow thinking and weakening of the cognitive processes may be due to the affection of brain cells by chronic diseases, retirement, missing life companion, and children's moving away from family. The old person then tries to make up for the emptiness feeling by superposing his past on his present. To avoid the painful aspect of senility, the old person should have sound and varying interests, and enjoy economic independence and many social relationships with people from all ages.
