Source text - Spanish Su luna de miel fue un largo escalofrío. Rubia, angelical y tímida, el carácter duro de su marido heló sus soñadas niñerías de novia. Lo quería mucho, sin embargo, a veces con un ligero estremecimiento cuando volviendo de noche juntos por la calle, echaba una furtiva mirada a la alta estatura de Jordán, mudo desde hacía una hora. Él, por su parte, la amaba profundamente, sin darlo a conocer.
Durante tres meses — se habían casado en abril — vivieron una dicha especial. Sin duda hubiera ella deseado menos severidad en ese rígido cielo de amor, más expansiva e incauta ternura; pero el impasible semblante de su marido la contenía en seguida.
La casa en que vivían influía no poco en sus estremecimientos. La blancura del patio silencioso — frisos, columnas y estatuas de mármol — producía una otoñal impresión de palacio encantado.

Translation - Portuguese A lua de mel foi um longo arrepio. Loura, angelical e tímida, o caráter duro do marido congelou as ingenuidades de noiva que ela havia sonhado. Amava-o muito, no entanto — às vezes com um ligeiro estremecimento quando, voltando juntos para casa à noite pela rua, lançava um olhar furtivo à alta estatura de Jordán, que permanecia mudo havia uma hora. Ele, por sua vez, a amava profundamente, sem nunca o demonstrar.

Source text - English The Time Traveller (for so it will be convenient to speak of him) was expounding a recondite matter to us. His pale grey eyes shone and twinkled, and his usually pale face was flushed and animated. The fire burnt brightly, and the soft radiance of the incandescent lights in the lilies of silver caught the bubbles that flashed and passed in our glasses. Our chairs, being his patents, embraced and caressed us rather than submitted to be sat upon, and there was that luxurious after-dinner atmosphere when thought roams gracefully free of the trammels of precision. And he put it to us in this way -- marking the points with a lean forefinger -- as we sat and lazily admired his earnestness over this new paradox (as we thought it) and his fecundity.
"You must follow me carefully. I shall have to controvert one or two ideas that are almost universally accepted. The geometry, for instance, they taught you at school is founded on a misconception."
Translation - Portuguese O Viajante do Tempo (como será conveniente chamá-lo daqui em diante) nos expunha uma questão recôndita. Seus olhos cinza-pálidos brilhavam e faiscavam, e seu rosto habitualmente descorado estava ruborizado e animado. O fogo ardia com vivacidade, e a suave luminescência das lâmpadas incandescentes nos abajures de prata captava as bolhas que cintilavam e se desfaziam em nossas taças. As cadeiras — patenteadas por ele próprio — nos enlaçavam e acariciavam em vez de simplesmente nos suportar, e havia aquela atmosfera luxuosa de pós-jantar em que o pensamento vaga com graciosidade, livre dos grilhões da precisão. Source text - English During the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens, I had been passing alone, on horseback, through a singularly dreary tract of country; and at length found myself, as the shades of the evening drew on, within view of the melancholy House of Usher. I know not how it was -- but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit. I say insufferable; for the feeling was unrelieved by any of that half-pleasureable, because poetic, sentiment, with which the mind usually receives even the sternest natural images of the desolate or terrible. I looked upon the scene before me -- upon the mere house, and the simple landscape features of the domain -- upon the bleak walls -- upon the vacant eye-like windows -- upon a few rank sedges -- and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees -- with an utter depression of soul which I can compare to no earthly sensation more properly than to the after-dream of the reveller upon opium.

Translation - Portuguese Durante todo aquele dia entorpecido, sombrio e silencioso no outono do ano — quando as nuvens pairavam com peso opressivo sobre os céus — eu havia percorrido sozinho, a cavalo, uma extensão de paisagem singularmente desolada; e ao fim me vi, com a chegada da penumbra da tarde, diante da melancolia da Casa de Usher. Não sei dizer como foi — mas, ao primeiro vislumbre do edifício, uma sensação de tristeza insuportável perpassou meu espírito. Digo insuportável; pois o sentimento não era amainado por nenhum daquele prazer pela metade, de índole poética, com que a mente habitualmente recebe mesmo as imagens naturais mais severas do desolado ou do terrível. Contemplei a cena diante de mim — a simples casa, os elementos da paisagem em seu domínio — as paredes áridas — as janelas vazias semelhantes a olhos — algumas plantas aquáticas esparsas — e alguns troncos brancos de árvores apodrecidas — com uma depressão de alma tal que só posso comparar adequadamente ao sonho posterior do fumador de ópio ao despertar.
