I hear myself thinking about all the people I know who have let me down by not leaving early on a Tuesday morning for glamorous European destinations. My former colleagues from the insurance office must still be stuck at their desks, like I always said they would be, when I was stuck there too, wasting my time and unable to settle while Ally moved steadily onward, getting her PhD and her first research fellowship at Reading University, her first promotion.
Our more recent grown-up friends, who have serious jobs and who therefore I half expect to be seeing any moment now, tell me that home-making is a perfectly decent occupation for a man, courageous even, yes, manly to stay at home with the kids. These friends of ours are primarily Ally’s friends. I don’t seem to know anyone anymore, and away from the children and the overhead planes, hearing myself think, I hear the thoughts of a whinger. This is not what I had been hoping to hear.
I start crying, not grimacing or sobbing, just big silent tears rolling down my cheeks. I don’t want anyone I know to see me crying, because I’m not the kind of person who cracks up at Heathrow airport some nothing Tuesday morning. I manage our house impeccably, like a business. It’s a serious job. I have spreadsheets to monitor the hoover-bag situation and colour-coded print-outs about the ethical consequences of nappies. I am not myself this morning. I don’t know who I am.

Select [Start]/[Control Panel]/[Performance and Maintenance] and click [System].2. Press the [Device Manager] button in the [Hardware] tab to start Device Manager.3. If the [Modem] category is listed, expand the category to show a list of modems.4. If the icon of an item is marked with an "x", then that item is invalid (disabled); otherwise, it is valid.5. If there is an invalid (disabled) device. Double-click that item to display the properties window of the specified device.6. Source text - English TESTPRODUCT™ Assayed Control, Abnormal, is for use as an assayed control plasma in the testing of Prothrombin Time (PT), Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT), Fibrinogen, Thrombin Time (TT), and Antithrombin.This lyophilized product is prepared from a pool of normal, citrated human plasma stabilized by adding a buffer containing bovine-derived products. Plasma is adjusted for abnormal PT, APTT, TT, Fibrinogen and AT levels.Assayed Control, Abnormal is a POTENTIALLY BIOHAZARDOUS MATERIAL. Source materials from which this product was derived were found negative for HBsAg and for antibodies against HCV, HIV-1 and HIV-2 by approved test methods. However, since no test method can offer complete assurance that infectious agents are absent, this product should be handled observing the same safety precautions employed when handling any potentially infectious material. PREPARATION1. Reconstitute each vial with 1.0 ml distilled or deionized water.2. Restopper vial and allow to stand until fully hydrated (a minimum of 5 minutes).3. Gently mix by rotation or inversion until dissolution is complete. DO NOT SHAKE.4. Allow to equilibrate for a total of 30 minutes before use (includes hydration time).NOTE: Do not use distilled water containing preservatives.Store unopened vials in refrigerator (2–8°C). Assayed Control, Abnormal, is stable until the expiration date shown on the label. After reconstitution, Assayed Control, Abnormal should be used within eight (8) hours of dissolution. Reconstituted product is stable for 4 weeks at -20°C. Reconstituted control plasma can be frozen and thawed once. Rapid freezing in a tightly sealed container is essential to ensure the quality of the product. Once frozen, reconstituted control plasma should be thawed rapidly in a 37°C waterbath and removed immediately after thawing is complete. Gently mix by inversion and allow to stand at room temperature for at least fifteen minutes prior to use.
