Many problems encountered in museum collections are caused by poor storage conditions. Over time, on exhibit or in storage, a specimen reacts with its environment. Several environmental factors contribute to the degradation of sensitive materials. This includes the irreversible breakdown of modern shells known as Byne’s “disease.” Here the reactive destruction of its surface irreparably damages the shell. This condition is easy to control or stop with the right environmental conditions. It is impossible to reverse.
Byne’s “disease” is not a disease. Rather, it is a chemical and physical breakdown that may look like mold growth. It is an efflorescence or breakout of salts. (Fig. 1).

Why Is It Called a “Disease?”
Loftus St. George Byne, a British amateur naturalist first described this condition in modern shell collections. He incorrectly assumed the condition was the result of “a bacillus,” or bacteria. However, research subsequently revealed that bacteria were never involved and that the condition was due to chemical reactions. But by then the term Byne’s “disease” was entrenched, and is still in use.
Byne’s “disease” can occur in any natural history specimen composed of, or including calcium carbonate. This includes mollusk and gastropod shells, bird eggshells, and limestone based rocks and fossils.
What Causes Byne’s “Disease?”
Byne’s “disease” occurs when calcium carbonate (CaCO3, the substance which makes up freshwater and marine shells, birds’ eggs, and other such specimens commonly encountered in natural history collections) reacts with an acidic vapor to form salts . In museum collections, this reaction generally occurs when acidic vapors dissolved in atmospheric water, commonly acetic acid and formic acid from wood and wood products used in storage, come into direct contact with the specimens. This reaction is accelerated by high relative humidity, since that provides more atmospheric water for the creation of acidic vapors. The salts (calcium acetate and calcium formate) crystallize on and through the specimen’s outer surface, destroying it in the process and leaving subsurface areas vulnerable for further reaction. This damage is irreversible, and, if the process is not stopped, will eventually destroy the specimen.

There are non-acidic, archivally stable versions of many of these materials that should be used.
How to Recognize a Specimen With Byne’s “Disease”
A specimen with a calcium carbonate structure that is affected with Byne’s “disease” initially shows some white, rough, chalky or fuzzy looking patches, spots or streaks on its surface. These are easier to detect in smooth, glossy specimens than in naturally pale-colored and rough-textured specimens.
As the condition progresses, the reaction causes salt crystals to build up on the surface. These may look to the unaided eye like a mold or fungus growth. Under a microscope, it is apparent that these are mineral structures, not biological ones.
A sour or vinegary smell in the storage cabinet is another indication of Byne’s “disease” (acetic acid, the basis of vinegar, is one of the acidic vapors commonly released as wood cellulose breaks down).
Other factors may cause a whitish film or streaky appearance on calcium carbonate materials, including the chemistry of the environment of the specimen in life and/or its burial environment.
When in doubt of the nature of a white patch or growth on a calcium carbonate structure, contact a conservator.
Health and Safety Warning: Calcium acetate and calcium formate, along with any other salts that may form, are not the same as common table salt (sodium chloride). NEVER taste these salts, even though you may see this recommended in older literature.
What Can You Do For An Affected Specimen?
Immediately remove a specimen with Byne’s from its damaging storage environment. The salt crystals are water-soluble and may be removed with a soak or gentle brushing under running water. Other than that, there is no direct interventive treatment. Any water based treatment should be very gentle, as even undamaged shells may be damaged by running water or prolonged soaking.
Never use alcohol or other antiseptics, and boiling, freezing or microwaving, all of which have been suggested in various publications.
After cleaning, move the affected specimen to a better storage environment, or the process will start again.
Store the specimen in a non-acidic storage system, i.e., metal cases with metal drawers, preferably steel. Avoid wood cases and drawers, and acidic cardboard boxes and trays made from wood unless they have been treated to remove the acids. Acid-free or alkaline-buffered products are usually marketed as “archival.”
If there is no other storage system, isolate the specimens from the acidic environment by using micro-environmental enclosures, such as polyethylene bags, glass jars or vials, or heat-sealed Mylar envelopes. Never return an affected specimen to its original, unimproved storage environment.
Dehumidify the storage room or case with desiccants such as conditioned silica gel; or dehumidify the room within the building’s HVAC systems.
Always document the specimen’s problem and all treatments. Include a detailed condition report with photographs with the date, specimen name, catalog number, description of the problem, and a detailed description of the steps taken to mitigate the problem. Take before and after treatment photographs.

How Can This Condition Be Prevented?
• Check all storage systems for pH levels before use with pH-indicator pens and strips.
• Keep temperature and relative humidity low and stable. Install a datalogger (preferred), or a hygrothermograph or thermohygrometer with readings recorded and analyzed weekly. Keep the storage system internal and external temperatures stable and as close as possible to levels recommended in the NPS Museum Handbook. Extreme highs and lows, as well as fluctuations, can be very damaging. The Byne’s reaction is driven by relative humidity: the higher the RH, the faster the reaction goes. RH is in turn influenced by the ambient temperature.
• Store specimens in steel cases and use archival storage supplies.
• Do not store any calcium carbonate structures such as mollusk and gastropod shells, birds’ eggshells, and similar specimens in wooden cases or drawers that are highly acidic.
• Do not use high-acid, non-archival papers, foams and cardboards.
• Avoid cotton, cork, and plastics.
• Generate labels and tags on acid-free paper. Encapsulate older labels in Mylar and archive them separately. Do not laminate labels or any other museum documents.
• Use storage or/and exhibit cases that have a low but steady air exchange at the rate of one change per day.
• Construct specialized cases for storage and display to hold specimens within a constant RH and temperature. Include filters to absorb outside pollutants.
• Do not coat or wax the specimen (even though this has been suggested in some publications as a preventative strategy.) The coating is a contaminant and will affect future studies of the specimen, and may in itself be acidic and reactive. It is always best is to control the storage or micro-environment without altering the specimen.
• Do ongoing monitoring of vulnerable specimens to prevent problems before they start. Analyze adverse monitoring results and take immediate action to correct.

Cómo reconocer a un espécimen con “enfermedad” de Byne.
Un espécimen con una estructura de carbonato de calcio afectada por la “enfermedad” de Byne inicialmente muestra algunos parches, manchas o vetas blancos, duros, gredosos o de aspecto borroso en su superficie. Estos son más fáciles de detectar en especímenes lisos o lustrosos de color pálido natural y en especímenes de textura dura.
Cuando la condición progresa, la reacción genera la creación de cristales de sal en la superficie. Estos podrían verse, a simple vista, como el crecimiento de musgo u hongos. Con un microscopio es evidente que son estructuras minerales, no biológicas.
Un olor agrio o vinagroso en el gabinete de almacenamiento es otro indicador de la “enfermedad” de Byne (ácido ascético, la base del vinagre, es uno de los vapores ácidos que comúnmente liberal la celulosa de la madera al descomponerse). Luego de la limpieza, mueva el espécimen afectado a un mejor entorno de almacenamiento o el proceso comenzará nuevamente.
Almacene el espécimen en un sistema de almacenamiento no ácido, i.e., vitrinas de metal con cajones de metal, preferentemente acero. Evite vitrinas de madera y cajones, y cajas de cartón ácido y bandejas hechas de madera a menos que hayan sido tratadas para remover los ácidos. Los productos libres de ácido o con amortiguación alcalina usualmente se comercializan como “archivísticos”.
Si no hay otro sistema de almacenamiento, aislar los especímenes del entorno ácido utilizando recintos micro-ambientales, como bolsas de polietileno, jarros de vidrio o viales, o sobres Mylar sellados al calor. Nunca devuelva un espécimen afectado a su entorno de almacenamiento original sin mejorar.
Deshumidificar la habitación o vitrina de almacenamiento con desecantes como gel de sílice acondicionado;o deshumidificar la habitación dentro de los sistemas HVAC del edificio.
Siempre documente el problema del espécimen y todos los tratamientos. Source text - English Stiles stood still and studied himself in the mirror. It wasn’t the first time, and it wouldn’t be the last that he watched himself through the foggy glass, reflecting his appearance back to him. He often did this when he felt lost. When he felt overwhelmed. When he felt trapped. He sighed as he realized the latter was what was on his mind now. He was trapped, and he wasn’t sure why, anymore.
As he watched the blood drip on the white marble of the sink basin, his thoughts turned to that afternoon. And the fact that this was so painfully normal now that he barely bat an eye as Chris apologized. Chris was always apologetic if there was a physical injury. Those he could see and somewhere within his shell, his conscience would flare up. Stiles sighed, closing his eyes as he held a cloth to his split lip. He knew that tomorrow he would wake up to flowers, chocolate, and a text. It was always the same, and it was suddenly too much.
Why was it too much?
Stiles sat on the toilet seat as he heard the door slam from downstairs. Chris was leaving, having cried, and begged for forgiveness while Stiles slowly walked up the stairs. Again, always the same. At least this was reliable, Stiles thought. Something routine he could count on.
He opened his eyes when he heard his phone ringing from his pocket. He hoped it wasn’t his dad or Scott. He knew he couldn’t lie this time; he was feeling too shaky, and they already hated Chris. They hated him for how he spoke to Stiles, let alone if they knew what happened at home.
He looked down as he slipped the phone into his shaking fingers. He froze when he saw the name. Grimacing he placed the phone on the floor and pushed it away from him with his foot. He didn’t want to answer, and he didn’t want to be tempted to, either.
How did Derek Hale always know when something was wrong? It was like the man had a sixth sense when it came to Stiles, and right now it was both comforting and annoying. He wanted to be left alone and to think.
Think about what his next moves were. He could leave Chris; he knew that of course. But just the thought made him panic. He was totally reliant on Chris now, and how the hell had that happened? It felt as if his life had been falling into place and then it was all over. Once he was young, in college, hyperactive and incessantly loud. Also, sad, and lonely, and just a little jealous as he watched Allison and Scott. Yearning after Derek.
Derek who had left, and Stiles didn’t know what to do with himself and all of that emotion. Enter Chris.
Charming, sweet, understanding, and so loving. Stiles hadn’t known what to do with himself. He hadn’t been accustomed to people treating him like a priority, like something to be cherished. He had fallen hard and fast with him. And before he knew it, he was married and living with someone who knew exactly what to say.
Stiles sighed, head falling in his hands as his phone started ringing again. He knew Derek wouldn’t give up, that he was the only one who really suspected what was going on. He loved that Derek was back in his life, but he also knew how hard it has made things. Complicated things. Feeling things. He stood and looked at himself again.
“How the hell did I get here?” He whispered to his reflection. “How did it get this far?”
As self-doubt and anger flooded his mind, he noticed his hands were shaking worse and he was heading for a panic attack. His lip was still bleeding and his ankle was throbbing. It wasn’t that bad of an argument tonight, Chris had only lost it once. He supposed that was good, and it had ended the endless barrage of insults and accusations quickly. Chris always stopped when he hit once or twice. It scared him, and Stiles would walk away.
And then the morning apology.
Same routine.
A sob escaped Stiles then, he hated that it was almost comforting how things would go after a fight. The mind games would stop for a week or so. He would be apologetic towards Chris, and vice versa, until Chris deemed it long enough. Things would go back to normal, and life would be tolerable.
But if it was tolerable, why did it always feel like this? Stiles sunk to the ground, sobbing and grimacing as he put most of his weight on his ankle. Why did the good days still feel like this? Why did the bad days feel like this? And why did the days of hell feel like this? Why was everything like this?
He gave in to the pain and let himself let go and cry for a few minutes before sucking in a deep breath. He leaned over and pulled his phone towards him. Closing his eyes, body still trembling he brought it to his ear and waited.
It only took a half a ring before Derek answered.
“Stiles?”
“Hey Der, what’s up?” He asked, feeling relief and shame at how normal his voice sounded.
“Are you okay?”
How the hell did he know? He was currently in Alaska, far, far away from California. There was no way that Derek Hale could know he and his husband had fought.
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?” Stiles asked, leaning back into the tub, and closing his eyes. He was forcing his breathing to be normal and used Derek’s voice as an anchor.
“I don’t know, I just…” Derek trailed off and Stiles knew he didn’t buy Stiles’ excuse. “I guess I just had a bad feeling and wanted to check. Then I got scared when you didn’t answer. Sorry for spamming your phone.”
“No problem, Der. I was just cleaning up after dinner and didn’t hear the ring.” Stiles lied, easily. It was second nature now.
“Okay…”
“How’s Alaska?”
“Cold.”
Stiles laughed and closed his eyes at how easy it was to talk to Derek.
He was glad he had come back into his life. No matter the cost. As he listened to Derek talk about his work and the weather and whatever else came to mind, he found himself reminiscing. About the course his life had taken. To losing Derek, meeting Chris, finding Derek, and now.
The now being most concerning.
“Stiles, you, okay? You’re being quiet.” Derek asked after a while.
“Yeah, big guy, just thinking…”
“About what?”
“Everything.” Stiles whispered. “Everything…”
Translation - Spanish Stiles se quedó quieto y se observó en el espejo. No era la primera vez, y no sería la última, en la que se miraba al espejo a través de un vidrio empañado que reflejaba su apariencia. Usualmente hacía esto cuando se sentía perdido. Cuando se sentía abrumado. Cuando se sentía atrapado. Suspiró dándose cuenta de que era esto último lo que tenía en mente ahora. Estaba atrapado y ya no estaba seguro de porqué.
Mientras miraba la sangre gotear en el mármol blanco del lavamanos, sus pensamientos se alejaron hasta aquella tarde. Y el hecho de que ahora esto fuera tan dolorosamente normal que apenas pestañea cuando Chris se disculpa. Chris siempre se mostraba arrepentido si había una herida física. De esas que él podía ver y hacía que, en algún lugar dentro de su cascarón, su consciencia estallara. Stiles suspiró, cerrando sus ojos mientras presionaba un paño sobre su labio partido. Sabía que al día siguiente se despertaría con flores, chocolates y un mensaje. Siempre era lo mismo y, de repente, era demasiado.
Por qué era demasiado?
Stiles se sentó en el asiento del baño, escuchando la puerta de abajo cerrarse con fuerza. Chris se estaba yendo, habiendo llorado y rogado por perdón mientras Stiles subía por las escaleras. De nuevo, siempre lo mismo. Al menos esto era seguro, pensó Stiles. Algo rutinario con lo que podía contar.
Abrió sus ojos cuando escuchó su teléfono sonar en su bolsillo. Esperó que no fueran ni su padre ni Scott. Sabía que no podría mentir esta vez; se sentía tan inestable, y ellos ya odiaban a Chris. Lo odiaban por cómo le hablaba a Stiles, ni pensar en si supieran lo que pasaba en casa.
Miró hacia abajo mientras deslizaba el teléfono en sus temblorosos dedos. Se heló cuando vio el nombre. Con una mueca, dejó el teléfono en el suelo y lo alejó con el pie. No quería contestar, ni quería tentarse a hacerlo tampoco.
Cómo hacía Derek para saber siempre cuando algo andaba mal? Era como si el hombre tuviera un sexto sentido cuando se trataba de Stiles, y ahora mismo era ambas cosas, reconfortante y molesto. Quería que lo dejaran a solas y quería pensar.
Pensar acerca cuáles eran sus posibles movimientos a partir de ahora. Podría dejar a Chris; por supuesto, sabía eso. Pero el solo pensamiento le generaba una oleada de pánico. Era totalmente dependiente de Chris ahora, y cómo había pasado eso? Se sintió como si su vida hubiera estado acomodándose para encontrar su lugar y ahora había terminado. En un momento, era joven, en la Universidad, hiperactivo e incesantemente ruidoso. También, triste, y solitario, y solo un poquito celoso cuando miraba a Scott y Allison. Anhelando a Derek.
Derek, quien se había ido, y Stiles no sabía qué hacer consigo mismo ni con todas esas emociones. Entra Chris.
Encantador, dulce, comprensivo, y tan amoroso. Stiles no había sabido qué hacer consigo mismo. No estaba acostumbrado a que la gente lo tratara como una prioridad, como algo que debiera ser apreciado. Cayó fuerte y rápido por él. Y antes de que lo supiera, estaba casado y viviendo con alguien que sabía exactamente qué decir.
Stiles suspiró, su cabeza cayó sobre sus manos mientras su teléfono comenzaba a sonar nuevamente. Sabía que Derek no se daría por vencido, que él era el único que realmente sospechaba qué estaba sucediendo. Amaba que Derek estuviera nuevamente en su vida, pero también sabía lo mucho que eso hacía difíciles las cosas. Cosas complicadas. Cosas que implicaban sentimientos. Se paró y volvió a mirarse al espejo.
"Cómo mierda llegué hasta aquí?" Le susurró a su reflejo. "Cómo esto llegó tan lejos?"
Mientras la inseguridad y el enojo inundaban su mente, notó que sus manos habían comenzado a temblar con más fuerza y se sintió en camino a un ataque de pánico. Su labio todavía sangraba y su tobillo palpitaba. No había sido una discusión tan grave esa noche, Chris sólo se había descontrolado una vez. Supuso que eso era bueno, y eso terminó rápidamente con el interminable torrente de insultos y acusaciones. Chris siempre se detenía luego de golpear una o dos veces. Eso lo espantaba y Stiles podía irse caminando.
Y entonces la disculpa matutina.
La misma rutina.
A Stiles se le escapó un sollozo, odiaba que era casi reconfortante cómo sucedería todo luego de una pelea. Los juegos mentales se detendrían por alrededor de una semana. Él se mostraría arrepentido con Chris, y viceversa, hasta que Chris considerara que ya había sido suficiente. Las cosas volverían a la normalidad, y la vida sería tolerable.
Pero si era tolerable, por qué siempre se sentía así? Stiles se hundió hasta el suelo, sollozando y haciendo una mueca cuando puso la mayoría de su peso sobre su tobillo. Por qué también los días buenos se sentían así? Por que los días malos se sentían así? Y por qué los días de infierno se sentían así? Por qué todo era así?
Se rindió ante el dolor y se dejó llorar por unos minutos antes de respirar profundamente. Se inclinó hacia adelante y tomó su teléfono. Cerrando sus ojos, con el cuerpo todavía temblando, lo acercó a su oído y aguardó.
Sólo tomó medio tono antes de que Derek contestara.
"Stiles?"
"Ey, Der, qué tal?" Preguntó, sintiendo alivio y culpa por lo casual que sonaba su propia voz.
"Estas bien?"
Cómo rayos sabía? Actualmente estaba en Alaska, muy, muy lejos de California. No había manera de que Derek Hale pudiera saber que él y su marido habían peleado.
"Sí, por qué no lo estaría?" Preguntó Stiles, recostándose contra la tina y cerrando sus ojos. Estaba forzando su respiración para que se mantuviera normal, utilizando la voz de Derek como un ancla.
"No lo sé, solo..." Divagó Derek y Stiles supo que no se había tragado su excusa. "Creo que solo tuve un mal presentimiento y quería asegurarme. Entonces me asusté cuando no contestaste. Disculpa por abarrotar tu teléfono."
"No hay problema, Der. Sólo estaba limpiando después de la cena y no oí la llamada." Mintió Stiles, con facilidad. Era una segunda naturaleza ahora.
"Okay..."
"Qué tal Alaska?"
"Frío."
Stiles rió y cerró sus ojos de lo fácil que era hablar con Derek.
Estaba feliz de que hubiera vuelto a su vida. Sin importar el costo. Mientras oía a Derek hablar sobre su trabajo y el clima y cualquier otra cosa que se le viniera a la mente, se encontró recordando. Acerca del curso que tomó su vida. Perder a Derek, conocer a Chris, encontrar a Derek y el ahora.
El ahora siendo lo más preocupante.
"Stiles, estas bien? Estas muy silencioso." Preguntó Derek luego de un rato.
