Source text - English Some truths about God we receive into our minds as we might receive a houseguest, expecting them to behave nicely and generally keep the furniture in place. But then, sooner or later, we hear the sounds of drills and saws. We feel the rumble of a sofa being dragged across the floor. And we discover that we have welcomed not a houseguest but a construction worker.
One such truth, for many of us, is the sovereignty of God. That God “works all things according to the counsel of his will” (Ephesians 1:11) struck me, at first, as both biblically plain and experientially sweet. I became a Calvinist almost without realizing it. But then, in time, no truth caused me more mental angst, and even anguish, than this doctrine of God’s total, unstoppable sovereignty. I had imagined myself the calm host of this truth, until my mind became a construction zone.
Many could testify to a similar experience of mental renovation. Open the door to God’s sovereignty, and walls of supposed rationality may collapse. Stairways of instinct may be turned right around. A whole new floor of possibility may be added. You will emerge “renewed in the spirit of your mind” (Ephesians 4:23), but the process may sometimes feel like a hammer blow.

Translation - Portuguese Recebemos em nossas mentes algumas verdades sobre Deus da mesma maneira que receberíamos um hóspede – esperando que ele se comporte bem e, de maneira geral, mantenha os móveis no lugar. Porém, mais cedo ou mais tarde, ouvimos barulho de brocas e serras. Ouvimos o barulho do sofá sendo arrastado pelo chão, e então descobrimos que acolhemos não a um hóspede, mas a um construtor civil.
Para muitos de nós, uma dessas verdades é a soberania de Deus. Que Deus “faz todas as coisas segundo o propósito da sua vontade” (Efésios 1:11) pareceu-me, a princípio, como biblicamente simples e doce de se experimentar. Eu me tornei um Calvinista quase sem perceber. Mas com o tempo, nenhuma verdade me causou mais angústia mental, e até mesmo aflição, do que esta doutrina da soberania total e invencível de Deus. Source text - English I wanted to do great things for God.
In the spring of my senior year of college, on the brink of embarking upon my own journey into adulthood, my future was undecided — and that was simultaneously terrifying and thrilling. As a philosophy major, my path was narrower than I had realized, but I was sure it would take me on some grand and glorious adventure.
I knew the chief end of man is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. “Glorify” sounds like such a grand term. It evokes images of battlefield sacrifices or marathon finishes. So, I thought I had to do spectacular things for God. But years later, I haven’t and I don’t. I must do small, ordinary things for God, and this is, in some strange way, much harder.
As a stay-at-home mom, the most adventurous and remarkable thing I do is manage to leave the house with little ones. There is an almost mind-numbing regularity and repetitiveness to my days. Make meals, clean up, change diapers, put away toys, and then wake up and do it all again. I can grow tired of the monotony — the sameness of my tasks, the dishes I’ve washed countless times, the laundry I’m sure I just folded, the floor that never seems to stay clean. Solomon talked about “vanity of vanities” (Ecclesiastes 1:2), and sometimes I wonder if he had housekeeping in mind. Either way, I can certainly understand what he meant when he said, “All things are full of weariness” (Ecclesiastes 1:8).
I can wonder, as he did, What is the point of it all?

Translation - Portuguese Eu queria fazer grandes coisas para Deus.
Na primavera do meu último ano de faculdade, à beira de embarcar em minha própria jornada para a vida adulta, meu futuro estava indeciso — e isso era ao mesmo tempo, aterrorizante e emocionante. Como estudante de Filosofia, meu caminho era mais estreito do que eu havia imaginado, mas tinha certeza de que isso me levaria a uma grande e gloriosa aventura.
Eu sabia que o principal objetivo do homem era glorificar a Deus e desfrutá-lo para sempre. “Glorificar” parece um termo tão grandioso. Desperta imagens de sacrifícios no campo de batalha ou nas linhas de chegada de maratonas. Então, eu pensei que tinha que fazer coisas espetaculares para Deus. Mas, anos depois, não as fiz e não as faço. Devo fazer coisas pequenas e ordinárias para Deus e isto é, de certa maneira, muito mais difícil.
Como mãe e dona de casa, a coisa mais aventureira e notável que faço é conseguir sair de casa com as crianças. Há uma regularidade e repetitividade quase entorpecentes nos meus dias. Cozinhe, limpe, troque fraldas, guarde os brinquedos, e depois acorde e faça tudo de novo. Posso me cansar da monotonia — da mesmice das minhas tarefas, dos pratos que lavei inúmeras vezes, da roupa que tenho a certeza que acabei de dobrar, do chão que parece nunca ficar limpo. Salomão falou sobre “vaidade de vaidades” (Eclesiastes 1:2), e às vezes me pergunto se ele tinha em mente os afazeres domésticos. De qualquer maneira, posso certamente entender o que ele quis dizer quando disse: “Todas as coisas trazem canseira” (Eclesiastes 1: 8).
Eu posso me perguntar, assim como ele, qual é o sentido de tudo isso?
