Source text - English Top officials of financial institutions say the National Bank of Ethiopia can’t solve the inflation issue by the directives it has recently issued.
The bank says as ensuring the amount of money that circulates in the economy doesn’t cause inflation through formulating monetary is one of its fundamental responsibilities that fall in the missions vested to it by proclamation, and therefore, that it has issued the directives and moved to their implementation. It is known that inflation is the cumulative effect of many factors, and the major ones are shortage of product supply, failure in facilitating logistics, and status of monetary and fiscal policy.
Though the government is exerting multifaceted efforts to curb inflation, the problem is worsening with time. Cognizant of this and believing that the necessary policy amendment should be made, the National Bank of Ethiopia has decided to implement a strict monetary policy to reduce the amount of money that is circulating in the economy. One of these directives is the one that has made banks to increase their legal reserve with the National Bank of Ethiopia from five percent to ten percent. Further, the directive that requires banks and insurance companies to purchase the Development Bank’s Bond (Debt Bond) is another directive among the directives that have been recently issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia. The directive that requires banks to transfer half of the foreign currencies they obtain to the National Bank of Ethiopia with daily exchange rates, is yet another worth mentioning measure among the measures recently taken by the National Bank of Ethiopia.
Banking officials we spoke to say these directives that have been issued all at once have become a shocking and an abrupt incident to many. They mentioned that they didn’t expect many of them, except for one directive. Mr. Tolosa Ebisa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of one the bank we spoke to, says that he didn’t expect them [the directives] during this time, and found them a setback for the entire financial sector.
