Source text - Japanese 狂言で主役を務める者は、能と同様にシテ（仕手）というが、その相手役を務める者は能のワキ（脇）とは異なり、アド（挨答）という。大藏流（※流派のひとつ。流派については後述）ではアドが集団で登場する立衆物（たちしゅうもの）などの場合、統率する一番目のアド（立頭）をオモと呼ぶ。また、和泉流（※流派のひとつ）では、アドに準ずる役柄を小アドなどと称する。実際の台本では後述の役名で表記されることの方が多い。
Translation - English In kyōgen and noh, the actor playing the leading role is known as the shite. However, supporting actors in each theater tradition are known by different names. In noh, these supporting actors are called waki, and in kyōgen they are called ado.
In the Ookura Style （※One of the styles of kyōgen. For more information on kyōgen styles, see below.), when the supporting characters appear onstage in a group, the leading actor is called the omo.
In the Izumi Style (※One of the styles of kyōgen), the equivalent role to the ado takes the name of ko-ado.
The official titles below are commonly listed in modern kyōgen scripts.
Because the official title also represents the role being played, general nouns are typical, while proper nouns are rare.
The titles include Daimyo (indicating a village chief), Fortunate One (indicating a successful person), Servant Taro・Servant Jiro・Servant Saburo, Buddhist Monk, Mountain Ascetic Monk, Swindler, Demon, Grandchild, and Merchant. Official titles are limited to several tens of role names.
