Source text - English CHECKING FOR FEVER/TAKING YOUR CHILD’S TEMPERATURE
If your child feels warm or seems sick, you can use a thermometer to take his or her temperature.
Your digital thermometer can be used in the rectum (in children any age) or mouth (in children over age 4 years, who can keep the thermometer under their tongue).
Rectal temperature (any age)
• Turn on the digital thermometer and lubricate the tip of the thermometer with petroleum jelly.
• Lay your baby or child on his or her back, lift his or her thighs, and insert the lubricated thermometer 1.3 to 2.5 centimeters (1/2 to 1 inch) into the rectum. Or, you can place your child on his or her belly on your lap or other firm surface. If you put your child belly down, put your hand against his or her lower back to hold the child in place.
• Never try to force a thermometer if it won’t go into the rectum. Lubricate the thermometer, reposition it, and try again.
• Hold the thermometer in place until the thermometer signals that it’s done.
• Remove the thermometer and read the number.
Oral temperature (over age 4 years)
• If your child has been eating or drinking, wait 15 minutes to take his or her temperature by mouth.
• Turn on the digital thermometer.
• Place the tip of the thermometer under your child's tongue toward the back of the mouth and ask your child to keep his or her lips closed.
• Remove the thermometer when it signals that it's done and read the number.

DIARRHEA OR VOMITING
When children have diarrhea or vomiting, they can lose large amounts of salts and water from their bodies and become dehydrated.
For diarrhea and vomiting, give DripDrops ORS
An oral rehydration solution (ORS) is a mixture of water, salts and sugar in specific amounts. These solutions can be absorbed even when your child has large amounts of diarrhea or is vomiting.
Mix one 21-gram packet into 16.9 oz (500 mL) of clean water. 500 mL is about 2 ½ cups.
For a child with diarrhea, for the first four hours, give the following amounts of DripDrops solution:
Babies under 6 months of age 2-6 tablespoons (30 to 90 mL or 1 to 3 oz.) every hour
Children 6 months to 2 years of age 6-8 tablespoons (90 to 125 mL or 3 to 4 oz.) every hour
Over 2 years of age 8-16 tablespoons (125 to 250 mL or 4 to 8 oz.) every hour
• From 4 hours to 1 day, keep giving your child the oral rehydration solution until diarrhea is less frequent
• Continue feeding your child their regular diet if they are not vomiting
If your child is vomiting, stop foods and other fluids and give the ORS using a spoon
• Give 1 tablespoon (15 mL) every 10 min to 15 min until the vomiting stops
• Increase the amounts gradually until your child is able to drink the regular amounts
• When vomiting decreases, it’s important to get your child to breastfeed as usual, drink formula or whole milk, or eat regular food in small, frequent feedings.
