Our journey to understanding the science of happiness kicked off in 1998 in Akamul, Mexico. Dr. Martin Seligman, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, had just been appointed chairman of the American Psychological Association (APA), and it was customary for a new chairman to choose a theme for his year.
Seligman wanted to break away (http://content.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1015832-1,00.html) from the traditional focus of psychology. "I realised that our profession was half-baked. It's not enough to just focus on mental health, we also have to look at what helps people thrive. "
He invited Ray Fowler, an influential former chairman of the APA, and Hungarian-born psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi to come and discuss the idea. At that stage, Csikszentmihalyi was already known for his research on "flow"—the feeling of total immersion in a creative activity experienced, for example, by athletes and musicians.

Die mens is en bly ‘n sosiale wese en maak op sosiale konneksies staat om te oorleef. Tog ervaar miljoene mense wêreldwyd eensaamheid in een of ander vorm. Trouens, volgens navorsing is ongeveer 45 persent van alle mense eensaam. Party mense ervaar dit net soms, terwyl sommige mense daarmee saamleef. Hoe dit ook al sy, eensaamheid is deel van ons elkeen se menswees.
Is eensaamheid en alleenheid dieselfde?
“Vir sommige mense beteken alleenwees onmiddellik ‘eensaam wees’. Vir ander is die alleenwees ‘n heilige oomblik, een van verryking, geestelike asemhaling en sommer net ‘n heerlike, welkome stil word.”—Dr Petrus Moolman, NGK Overkruin
Die kliniese sielkundige Louis Auerbuck skryf in ‘n artikel in die Eikestad Nuus (9 Sept. 2019): “Alleenheid (waar ander mense fisies afwesig is) kan eensaamheid veroorsaak, maar om alleen te wees, maak ‘n mens nie noodwendig eensaam nie”.
Eensaamheid het nie altyd te doen met die hoeveelheid mense om jou nie – jou emosionele en intellektuele verbintenis met andere en hoe gekonnekteer jy aan die mense in jou omgewing voel, kan ook bepaal of jy eensaam gaan wees of nie.
“Om eensaam te voel, is om ongelukkig, geїsoleerd, verwerp, hopeloos en hartseer te voel en die gevolge op lewenskwaliteit is beduidend.” Auerbuck sê ook dat eensaamheid ‘n mens se gesondheid kan beїnvloed en dat chroniese eensaamheid ‘n mens se lewensverwagting met tot 26% kan verkort. Behalwe depressie en dikwels gepaardgaande misbruik van dwelmmiddels of alkohol, vergroot ‘n mens se risiko vir hoё bloeddruk, hartprobleme, beroerte, demensie en selfs kanker aansienlik.
Dr. Moolman verwoord dit soos volg: “Daar is baie mense wat alleen is en daaraan gewoond is. Sommige het verkies om die lewenspad alleen te loop. Ander is deur omstandighede gedwing om alleen te wees. Baie enkelopende mense—veral dié wat dit so gekies het—ervaar alleenwees as normaal. Dit is hulle lewe. Ander ervaar alleenwees egter as ‘eensaamheid’. Dit is beslis ook nie net die ouer geslag wat eensaam kan word nie. Veral die ouderdomsgroep 18-25 jaar is baie vatbaar vir die verskynsel van eensaamheid.”
Volgens Dr. Moolman is daar baie faktore wat alleenwees in eensaamheid kan verander. Dit verskil tussen ouderdomsgroepe, faktore soos persoonlikheid, hoe ons onsself beoordeel, hoe ons dinge hanteer waaroor ons nie beheer het nie, ons sosiale verhoudinge, ensomeer kan tot eensaamheid lei. Vir baie ouer mense gaan eensaamheid dikwels gepaard met “gevoelens van verlies van selfstandigheid. Ons word toenemend afhanklik van andere. Ons voel dikwels dat mense ons nie ag vir wie ons was en steeds is nie.” Dit veroorsaak dat die ouer persoon se selfbeeld ‘n knou kry, wat dan onttrekking tot gevolg het—en dit dra ook by tot vereensaming.
Dr. Elizma van der Smit skryf in haar blog, zenzilelife.com, dat daar twee tipes eensaamheid is:
Emosionele eensaamheid – dit is ‘n gebrek aan of verlies van geselskap.
Sosiale eensaamheid – dit is wanneer ons ‘n gebrek aan ‘n wyer sosiale netwerk of groep vriende ervaar.
Eensaamheid is nie ‘n hopelose toestand nie
Daar is wel stappe wat jy kan neem om eensaamheid te besweer en meer betekenisvolle sosiale konneksies te ontwikkel. Dr. Van der Smit noem ses stappe om te volg soos wat oorspronklik voorgestel is deur die sielkundige en skrywer Robert L. Leahy.
Dit is normaal om eensaamheid te ervaar
Jy is beslis nie die enigste persoon op aarde wat eensaam voel nie. Daar is ook talle redes waarom jy eensaamheid ervaar. Dink maar aan gesinne wat uitmekaar dryf, egskeiding, immigrasie, gebrek aan deelname aan sport of organisasies. Daarom is dit nodig om strategieё daar te stel om die gevoel van eensaamheid te hanteer.
Maak ‘n plan
Bepaal wanneer jou eensaamheid die ergste is en struktureer jou dag om aktiwiteite te beplan wat jou aandag op jou eensaamheid sal verminder. Weet wat jy vandag wil doen en wat jy wil bereik. Maak dan vooraf planne om daardie tye saam met ander te verkeer of om iets te doen wat jy geniet. Bel iemand, luister na musiek, begin ‘n stokperdjie. Sluit by ‘n klub aan.
Jy kan goed alleen doen – veral dinge wat die moeite werd is
Onthou—jy hoef nie saam met iemand te stap, fiets te ry, te gaan uiteet of fliek nie—solank dit natuurlik in ‘n veilige omgewing plaasvind. Dalk voel jy selfbewus om alleen dinge te doen, en voel jy dalk mense gaan jou skeef aankyk, maar dikwels is dit net jou eie persepsies. Buitendien, hoekom gee jy om wat ander dink? Daardie behoefte aan kontak met ander mense of diere is universeel. Oorweeg dit dus om ‘n troeteldier aan te skaf, doen vrywilligheidswerk—maak planne om mense te sien. Dink buite jouself en neem die inisiatief en maak kontak met mense wat jou belangstellings deel. Dit verg dalk ‘n bietjie dapperheid van jou kant af om jouself met ander te deel, maar dit is alles die moeite werd. Reik uit na mense na wie jy verlang of met wie jy lanklaas gepraat het. Ondersteun en bemoedig diegene wat dit nodig het.
Wees goed vir jouself

Sien om na jou gesondheid, bederf jouself met iets lekker om te eet of ‘n klein geskenkie, geniet jou eie tyd en wees jou eie beste vriend. “In ons besige lewens, is stil word baie nodig en kan selfopgelegde eensaamheid selfs genesend en positief wees.”
Dis oukei om nie oukei te wees nie
Ons kan almal teen eensaamheid veg deur betrokke te raak, deernis teenoor andere te toon en goedhartigheid te beoefen. Vind betekenis in jou lewe en leef bewustelik. Glo jy is goed genoeg. Humans are and remain social beings and rely on social connections to survive. Yet millions of people worldwide experience loneliness in one form or another. In fact, according to research, about 45 percent of all people are lonely. Some people only experience it sometimes, while some people live with it constantly. Be that as it may, loneliness is part of the humanity of each of us.
Is Being Alone the same as Loneliness?
"For some people, being alone immediately means 'being lonely'. For others, being alone is a sacred moment, one of enrichment, spiritual breathing and just a wonderful, welcome silence.” —Dr Petrus Moolman, NGK Overkruin
The clinical psychologist Louis Auerbuck writes in an article in the Eikestad News (9 Sept. 2019): “Being alone (where other people are physically absent) can cause loneliness but being alone does not necessarily make you feel lonely”.
Loneliness does not always have to do with the amount of people around you—your emotional and intellectual connection with others and how connected you feel to the people around you can also determine whether you will feel lonely or not.
"To feel lonely is to feel unhappy, isolated, rejected, hopeless, and sad and the consequences on quality of life are significant." Auerbuck also writes that loneliness can affect one's health and that chronic loneliness can shorten one's life expectancy by up to 26%. In addition to depression and often concomitant drug or alcohol abuse, one's risk for high blood pressure, heart problems, stroke, dementia, and even cancer increases significantly.
Dr. Moolman puts it this way: “There are many people who are alone and used to it. Some have chosen to walk the path of life alone. Others were forced by circumstances to be alone. Many single people—especially those who choose to remain single—experience being alone as normal. This is their life. Others, however, experience being alone as 'loneliness'. It is certainly not just aging people who can become lonely. The 18-25 age group in particular is very susceptible to the phenomenon of loneliness.”
According to Dr Moolman, there are many factors that can turn being on your own into loneliness. It varies between age groups, but factors such as personality, how we judge ourselves, how we manage things over which we have no control, our social relationships, and so forth can lead to loneliness. For many older people, loneliness often goes hand in hand with “feelings of loss of independence. We are becoming increasingly dependent on others. We often feel that people do not respect us for who we were and still are.” This causes the older person's self-esteem to suffer, which in turn leads to withdrawal—and it also contributes to loneliness.
Dr Elizma van der Smit writes in her blog, zenzilelife.com, that there are two types of loneliness:
Emotional loneliness - this is a lack or loss of social interaction, conversation, being understood, and company.
Social loneliness - this is when we lack or lose membership of social groups and become isolated from human interaction over the longer term.
Loneliness is not a hopeless state
There are, however, steps you can take to alleviate loneliness and develop more meaningful social connections. Dr. Van der Smit mentions six steps to follow as originally recommended by psychologist and author Robert L. Leahy.
It's normal to experience loneliness
You are definitely not the only person in the world who feels lonely. There are also numerous reasons why you may experience loneliness. Think of families drifting apart, divorce, immigration, lack of participation in sports or organizations. Therefore, it is necessary to establish strategies to deal with the feeling of loneliness.
Make an appointment with happiness
Determine when your loneliness is at its worst and structure your day to minimize the effect it has on you, by trying to stay busy. Know what you want to do with your day and what you want to achieve. Then make advance plans to spend time with others or to do something you enjoy. Call someone, listen to music, start a hobby. Join a club.
You can do good things on your own—especially things that are worthwhile
Remember—you do not have to walk, go for a bike ride, eat, or go to a movie with another person—as long as it takes place in a safe environment. Maybe you feel self-conscious about doing things alone, and you may feel people are going to look at you askance, but often it's just your own perceptions. Besides, why do you care what others think? You are independent and strong if you can tackle things on your own.
How do you think about loneliness?
Notice your emotions and acknowledge them. Just because you are on your own, you do not necessarily have to feel alone and sad. Consider it an opportunity to do what you would like to do. Enjoy the peace and quiet of reading, listening to your music, eating what you feel like—just doing and enjoying things on your own time. Yes, you may not like being on your own, but it's the way you see and deal with it that ultimately matters. Rather see it as something of a transient nature—something you can control and handle.
Build a community of connectedness

The need for contact with other people or animals is universal. So, consider acquiring a pet, doing volunteer work—making plans to see people. Think outside of yourself and take the initiative to connect with people who share your interests. It may take a little courage on your part to share yourself with others, but it's all worth it. Reach out to people you long for or have not spoken to in a long time. Support and encourage those who need it.
Be good to yourself
Accept yourself, i.e., "gain control over who you are and how you think about yourself". Practice compassion for yourself. Tell yourself that you matter and deserve to be respected by others.
Care of your health, treat yourself to something nice to eat or a small gift, enjoy your own time and be your own best friend. "In our busy lives, silence becomes very necessary and self-imposed loneliness can even be healing and positive."
It's okay not to be okay
We can all fight loneliness by getting involved, showing compassion for others, and practicing kindness.
Find meaning in your life and live consciously. Believe you are good enough. Do not get caught up in a negative spiral. Live with gratitude. Reach out to others. And if you really cannot manage it by yourself, consult a psychologist or a counselor. It usually helps to talk to someone outside your inner circle.

Vermist 17-jarig meisje levend aangetroffen in ouderlijk huis in Arnhem

ARNHEM - Het 17-jarige meisje uit Arnhem dat sinds maandag werd vermist, is Donderdagmiddag teruggevonden in haar ouderlijk huis in Arnhem. Ze werd levend en in onbekende toestand naar het ziekenhuis overgebracht, meldt de politie.
Buurtgenoten hebben niets gemerkt. Ze zijn erg gesloten over straatgenoten. Er zou nauwelijks onderling contact zijn met de buren. Anderen willen om privacyredenen niets zeggen over het gezin, waarvan de tiener deel uitmaakt.
Het meisje is meteen nadat ze terecht was, voor onderzoek naar het ziekenhuis gebracht. Intussen heeft de politie de woning onderzocht. Nadat een misdrijf kon worden uitgesloten, is het onderzoek volgens politiewoordvoerder Sven Strijbosch afgerond.
Reden vermissing onduidelijk
Kort na het verschijnen van een AMBER Alert trof de politie de tiener in onbekende toestand aan in de woning van haar ouders. „Wat er sinds maandag met haar is gebeurd of wat de reden van haar vermissing is geweest, is nog onduidelijk”, aldus Strijbosch.

Speurhonden
Sinds afgelopen maandag werd op grote schaal gezocht naar het meisje. Daarbij zijn tientallen speurhonden, helikopters, natuurbeheerders, vrijwilligers en leden van het Veteranen Search Team ingezet. Er is gezocht in de bosrijke omgeving van Heveadorp, Renkum, Oosterbeek, Arnhem, Bennekom, Wekerom, Otterlo en Ede.
Het is nog niet duidelijk hoe de politie de vermiste tiener heeft teruggevonden. De politie verstuurde donderdagmiddag een AMBER Alert. Een half uur later maakte de politie bekend dat het meisje was gevonden. Volgens de woordvoerster van de politie heeft de oproep niet geleid tot de vondst van het meisje. Of de Arnhemse zich mogelijk uiteindelijk toch zelf heeft gemeld is nog onbekend.
De zoekactie naar het vermiste meisje woensdag.
Er waren grote zorgen over het vermiste meisje vanwege haar gezondheid. Ze was erg vermagerd en had medische hulp nodig, zei de politie. Er waren waarschijnlijk geen anderen bij haar vermissing betrokken.
Dankbaar
De ouders van het meisje hebben via een woordvoerder laten weten dat ze erg dankbaar zijn voor alle hulp en de grote inzet van alle betrokkenen.
Via sociale media vroeg de politie bewoners van het gebied tussen Arnhem, Otterlo en Heveadorp om ook in schuren en stallen te kijken, omdat het meisje zich daar mogelijk zou verstoppen. Een AMBER alert wordt gemiddeld zo’n twee keer per jaar verstuurd.

Missing 17-year-old girl found alive in parental home in Arnhem

ARNHEM—The 17-year-old girl from Arnhem who had been missing since Monday was found on Thursday afternoon in her parental home in Arnhem. She was taken to hospital alive and in unknown condition, police said.
Neighbours didn't notice anything. They keep to themselves when it comes to their neighbours. There is hardly any contact between neighbours. Others don't want to say anything about the family the teen is a part of, for privacy reasons.
Immediately after being found, the girl was taken to hospital for examination. In the meantime, the police have searched the house. After a crime was ruled out, the investigation was closed, according to police spokesman Sven Strijbosch.
Reason for disappearance is unclear
Shortly after an AMBER Alert was issued, police found the teenager in an unknown condition at her parents' home. "What happened to her since Monday or what the reason for her disappearance was is still unclear," said Strijbosch.
Neighbours know that the 17-year-old girl is the oldest child in a family of five children. She has two sisters and two brothers, the youngest of whom is about ten years old according to one of the volunteers who searched for the 17-year-old girl from Arnhem this week.
Sniffer dogs
Since last Monday, there has been a large-scale search for the girl. Dozens of sniffer dogs, helicopters, nature managers, volunteers, and members of the Veterans Search Team were deployed. The search was carried out in the wooded area of Heveadorp, Renkum, Oosterbeek, Arnhem, Bennekom, Wekerom, Otterlo and Ede.
It is not yet clear how the police found the missing teenager. The police sent out an AMBER Alert on Thursday afternoon. Half an hour later, the police announced that the girl had been found. According to a police spokeswoman, the call did not lead to the finding of the girl. It is still unknown whether the girl possibly reported herself as missing.

Most general practitioners rely on standardized screening tests for mental health problems. These screening tests include scales such as the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Screen (CES-D), and the Zung Self-Assessment Depression Scale (SDS). The weakness of these standardized tests relates to the fact that they are developed based upon the symptoms of depression described by women, for the simple reason that women seek help more often and are more open about their feelings. In the development of screening tools for depression, the views of women are vastly overrepresented—a rather serious sampling bias.
Common screening tests are therefore often unable to detect depression in men, leaving large numbers of men undiagnosed, misdiagnosed, and further removed from appropriate care. This means that large numbers of men struggle, without acknowledgment or treatment, which may in part account for the higher rates of suicide mortality among men (suicide mortality for men is four times higher than for women).
In one study conducted in an out-patient facility for alcoholism, the standard screening tests for depression identified the disorder in only 17% of the men, but the Gotland Scale of Male Depression—specifically developed for screening men—identified a staggering 39% of men as depressed in the same group. Another study of a Swiss institution for suicide prevention found that 75% of those who came seeking help were women. Compare this then to the estimates that 75% of the people who died from suicide in that year, were men. The authors of this study made the bleak observation: “Women seek help. Men die”.

ARNHEM - Het 17-jarige meisje uit Arnhem dat sinds maandag werd vermist, is Donderdagmiddag teruggevonden in haar ouderlijk huis in Arnhem. Ze werd levend en in onbekende toestand naar het ziekenhuis overgebracht, meldt de politie.
Buurtgenoten hebben niets gemerkt. Ze zijn erg gesloten over straatgenoten. Er zou nauwelijks onderling contact zijn met de buren. Anderen willen om privacyredenen niets zeggen over het gezin, waarvan de tiener deel uitmaakt.
Het meisje is meteen nadat ze terecht was, voor onderzoek naar het ziekenhuis gebracht. Intussen heeft de politie de woning onderzocht. Nadat een misdrijf kon worden uitgesloten, is het onderzoek volgens politiewoordvoerder Sven Strijbosch afgerond.
Reden vermissing onduidelijk
Kort na het verschijnen van een AMBER Alert trof de politie de tiener in onbekende toestand aan in de woning van haar ouders. „Wat er sinds maandag met haar is gebeurd of wat de reden van haar vermissing is geweest, is nog onduidelijk”, aldus Strijbosch.
Buren weten dat het 17-jarige meisje het oudste kind is in een gezin met vijf kinderen. Ze heeft twee zusjes en twee broertjes, van wie de jongste ongeveer tien jaar is volgens een van de vrijwilligers die deze week meezocht naar het 17-jarig meisje uit Arnhem
Speurhonden
Sinds afgelopen maandag werd op grote schaal gezocht naar het meisje. Daarbij zijn tientallen speurhonden, helikopters, natuurbeheerders, vrijwilligers en leden van het Veteranen Search Team ingezet. Er is gezocht in de bosrijke omgeving van Heveadorp, Renkum, Oosterbeek, Arnhem, Bennekom, Wekerom, Otterlo en Ede.
Het is nog niet duidelijk hoe de politie de vermiste tiener heeft teruggevonden. De politie verstuurde donderdagmiddag een AMBER Alert. Een half uur later maakte de politie bekend dat het meisje was gevonden. Volgens de woordvoerster van de politie heeft de oproep niet geleid tot de vondst van het meisje. Of de Arnhemse zich mogelijk uiteindelijk toch zelf heeft gemeld is nog onbekend.

Translation - English Missing 17-year-old girl found alive in parental home in Arnhem

ARNHEM—The 17-year-old girl from Arnhem who had been missing since Monday was found on Thursday afternoon in her parental home in Arnhem. She was taken to hospital alive and in unknown condition, police said.
Neighbours didn't notice anything. They keep to themselves when it comes to their neighbours. There is hardly any contact between neighbours. Others don't want to say anything about the family the teen is a part of, for privacy reasons.
Immediately after being found, the girl was taken to hospital for examination. In the meantime, the police have searched the house. After a crime was ruled out, the investigation was closed, according to police spokesman Sven Strijbosch.
Reason for disappearance is unclear
Shortly after an AMBER Alert was issued, police found the teenager in an unknown condition at her parents' home. "What happened to her since Monday or what the reason for her disappearance was is still unclear," said Strijbosch.
Neighbours know that the 17-year-old girl is the oldest child in a family of five children. She has two sisters and two brothers, the youngest of whom is about ten years old according to one of the volunteers who searched for the 17-year-old girl from Arnhem this week.
Sniffer dogs
Since last Monday, there has been a large-scale search for the girl. Dozens of sniffer dogs, helicopters, nature managers, volunteers, and members of the Veterans Search Team were deployed. The search was carried out in the wooded area of Heveadorp, Renkum, Oosterbeek, Arnhem, Bennekom, Wekerom, Otterlo and Ede.
It is not yet clear how the police found the missing teenager. The police sent out an AMBER Alert on Thursday afternoon. Half an hour later, the police announced that the girl had been found. According to a police spokeswoman, the call did not lead to the finding of the girl. It is still unknown whether the girl possibly reported herself as missing.

There were serious concerns about the missing girl due to her health. She was very emaciated and needed medical attention, police said. Nobody has been identified as being involved in her disappearance.

The girl's parents have said through a spokesperson that they are very grateful for all the help and the great efforts of all involved.
Via social media, the police asked residents of the area between Arnhem, Otterlo, and Heveadorp to also look in barns and stables, because the girl might be hiding there. An AMBER alert is sent on average about twice a year.
