Spanish to English: Come Lay It, Will You! General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Journalism
Translation - English Guatemala should be more precise and not go around saying that one of its most brilliant children has just turned 40 years dead, and that nobody was up to such an obituary. Miguel Ángel died the same day he was born, for having the temerity to be born in a place like this: a total enemy of the spirit, of books, of their authors, of their publishers, and of their increasingly scarce readership.

Source text - Spanish 4:57-5:06 Sin embargo, un giro importante se dio con las conmemoraciones de la Universidad de San Carlos para el cincuentenario de la “Revolución de Octubre” de 1994;
Translation - English However, a major change came with the commemorations of the fiftieth anniversary of “The October Revolution” in 1994 by the University of San Carlos de Guatemala.
And with them, the praise of Árbenz and the repatriation of his remains.
English to Spanish: Las variedades lingüísticas y su finalidad retórica General field: Science Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English Linguistic varieties and their rhetoric purpose
Translators have been facing the problem that a target language may not have adequate
resources to provide for an equivalent target text, e.g. when the source language reflects the
close relationship between the speaker/medium/context in which it is used. The literary use of
a dialect raises important questions to the study of translation, not only because it is specific
of the source language system, but also because it is always embedded in the source text with
a pragmatic and semiotic significance. The creative use of linguistic varieties in literary dialog
contributes to inform the reader about who is speaking and under which circumstances he/she
is speaking, showing itself as a textual resource which defines the sociocultural outline of the
character in addition to his/her position in the sociocultural fictional context.
Translation - Spanish Las variedades lingüísticas y su finalidad retórica
