Source text - Spanish 3. ANTECEDENTES SOBRE LA BIOLOGÍA Y ECOLOGÍA DE LA ESPECIE
3.1 Descripción morfológica
El pingüino de Humboldt (Spheniscus humboldti) presenta ambos sexos de coloración similar, sin variación estacional del plumaje. Los individuos juveniles se pueden distinguir notoriamente de los adultos.
El adulto posee sus partes superiores de color gris-pardo, la cabeza es negra con una banda blanca que se origina en la base de la maxila y se curva hacia abajo donde se une con una banda blanca más ancha en la parte inferior del cuello. Posee un vientre blanco, cruzado en la parte superior del pecho por una banda oscura en forma de herradura que baja a ambos lados del cuerpo hasta las patas y separada del dorso por una banda blanca angosta. El pico es grueso y de color gris-negruzco con la base de color rosado, que se hace más prominente durante la reproducción. El iris es de color rosado a café, dependiendo de la edad. Las patas son negras con manchas blancas en la membrana. Sus aletas son de color gris-negruzco en la parte dorsal y blanco en la parte ventral. El individuo juvenil, posee un plumaje grisáceo con el vientre blanco y con ambas mejillas de color gris pero sin la banda blanca. Tampoco presenta la banda oscura en el pecho (Williams, 1995; Araya & Millie, 1998; Jaramillo, 2003) (Figura-1).
Zavalaga & Paredes (1997) realizaron un estudio morfométrico para la especie en San Juan de Marcona Perú, pudiendo determinar que los pingüinos de Humboldt son sexualmente dimórficos y que los machos son más grandes y pesados que las hembras y desarrollaron una función discriminante para determinar el sexo según el ancho de la cabeza y la longitud del pico. Sin embargo, dicha función pierde certeza al utilizarla en otros pingüinos. Wallace et al., (2008) desarrollaron un protocolo similar con los pingüinos de la colonia del islote Pájaro Niño, en Algarrobo, Chile central, sin embargo existe una gran sobreposición de tamaño entre machos y hembras que tampoco permiten que el modelo desarrollado sea del todo preciso. Ambos trabajos señalan la importancia de realizar una comprobación de los resultados morfológicos, con determinación de sexo a través de análisis genéticos.

Both sexes of the Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) have similar coloration, without seasonal plumage variation. Juvenile exemplars can be clearly distinguished from adults.
The upper parts of the adult are a gray-brown color, and the head is black with a white band that originates at the base of the jaw and curves down to where it joins with a wider white band at the bottom of the neck. It has a white belly, crossed on the upper part of the chest by a dark band in the shape of a horseshoe that goes down on both sides of the body to the legs, and is separated from the back by a narrow white band. The bill is thick and grayish-black with a pink base, which becomes more prominent during reproduction. The iris is pink to brown, depending on age. The legs are black with white spots on the membrane. Its fins are grayish-black in the dorsal part and white in the ventral part. The juvenile exemplar has a grayish plumage with a white belly and both cheeks are gray, but without the white band. Neither has the dark band on the chest (Williams, 1995; Araya & Millie, 1998; Jaramillo, 2003) (Figure-1).
Zavalaga & Paredes (1997) performed a morphometric study for the species in San Juan de Marcona, Peru. They were able to determine that the Humboldt penguins are sexually dimorphic, and that the males are larger and heavier than the females. They developed a discriminant function to determine the sex, according to the width of the head and the length of the beak. However, this function is less reliable when used with other penguins. Wallace et al. (2008) developed a similar protocol with the penguins of the Pájaro Niño peninsula colony, in Algarrobo, central Chile. However, there is a large size overlap between males and females that does not allow for complete accuracy with the developed model. Both papers point out the importance of carrying out a verification of the morphological results, with determination of sex through genetic analysis.
