Source text - English The impact of external factors on marketing communications
External and environmental factors have forced marketers to undertake a fundamental rethink both of marketing strategies and the positioning of products, and this, in turn, must impact on the process of marketing communications.
Information overload
The consumer is continuously bombarded with vast quantities of information. According to Dan O’Donoghue (1997), whereas the average consumer was subjected to about 300 commercial messages a day in 1995, today that figure
has risen to around 3000.
Whether the information is orchestrated by the marketer or the media in general is less relevant than the fact that there is simply too much information for the average consumer to process effectively.
The inevitable consequence is that much of the material is simply screened out and discarded.
The result is that the consumer may make purchasing decisions based on limited knowledge, or even a misunderstanding of the real facts. The individual is far less concerned with the average advertising message, which makes the task of ensuring appropriate communications with the target audience an even more daunting prospect.
An important dimension of the screening process is what I have described elsewhere as the ‘submarine mentality’. In essence, since none of us can absorb all of the information around us, we establish personal defence mechanisms to screen out unwanted or irrelevant information. The analogy would be that of a submarine which goes underwater and, hence, avoids the surface bombardment. At periodic intervals, the submarine lifts its periscope to examine particular aspects of the world around it. And when it has finished gathering the new information, it descends again – oblivious to any changes which might be taking place.
As consumers, our awareness of specific advertising messages is treated in a similar way. Some form of trigger mechanism is usually required to encourage us to pay attention to the variety of marketing communications messages. Usually, this is an internal recognition of an unfulfilled need which
heightens the levels of awareness of pertinent advertising and other information. The principle can be commonly observed. If, for example, you have recently purchased a new car, your awareness of the marque will be enhanced and you will immediately become aware of similar vehicles all around you.
However, in the process of attempting to find better and more effective ways of communicating, we have also gained a greater appreciation of the nature of marketing communications itself. Much work has been done in the area of model construction and theoretical examination which has helped us to
enhance areas of implementation.

Fattori esterni ed ambientali hanno costretto gli operatori marketing ad un fondamentale ripensamento sia delle strategie di marketing che del posizionamento dei prodotti. Questo, di conseguenza, ha impattato sul processo delle comunicazioni di marketing.
Eccesso di informazioni
Il consumatore è continuamente bombardato da una vasta quantità d’informazioni. Secondo Dan O’Donoghue (1997), mentre nel 1995 in media un consumatore era soggetto alla ricezione di circa 300 messaggi commerciali, oggi la cifra è cresciuta fino a circa 3000.
Che le informazioni siano orchestrate o meno dagli operatori di marketing o da qual si voglia media è meno rilevante del fatto che, semplicemente, ci sono troppe informazioni perché il consumatore medio possa effettivamente assoribirle.
L’inevitabile consuguenza è che gran parte del materiale informativo è semplicemente scartato ed eliminato.
Il risultato è che il consumatore possa prendere una decisione di acquisto basandosi su una conoscenza limitata, o addirittura su un fraintendimento della realtà delle cose. L’individuo è mediamente sempre meno interessato al messaggio pubblicitario, tanto da rendere in prospettiva ancora più scoraggiante il compito di assicurarsi di aver lanciato il giusto messaggio al pubblico target.
Un importante aspetto del processo di screening è quello che ho descritto altrove come la “attitudine da sottomarino”. In pratica, dato che nessuno di noi è capace di assorbire tutte le informazioni che ci circondono, mettiamo in atto dei meccanismi di difesa per scartare tutte le informazioni non desiderate o irrilevanti. Analogamente un sottomarino si immerge per evitare i bombardamenti sulla superficie. A intervalli cadenzati il sottomarino manda in superficie il periscopio per esaminare particolari aspetti del mondo che lo circonda. E, una volta completata la raccolta d’informazioni, scende nuovamente negli abissi – noncurante di qualsiasi cambiamento possa aver avuto luogo.
Da consumatori, la nostra consapevolezza di specifici messaggi pubblicitari funziona in modo molto simile. Una certa forma di meccanismo a reazione è solitamente richiesto per incoraggiarci a prestare attenzione alla varietà dei messaggi di comunicazione di marketing. Di solito, è un riconoscimento viscerale di un bisogno non soddisfatto che intensifica il livello di consapevolezza del messaggio pubblicitario di pertinenza e di altre informazioni. Questo principio può essere comunemente osservato. Se, per esempio, avete recentemente comprato una nuova macchina, la vostra consapevolezza riguardo quel particolare marchio d’automobile sarà molto più sensibile e diverette improvvisamente consapevoli di tutti i veicoli simili intorno a voi.
Comunque sia, nei tentativi fatti di cercare migliori e più efficaci vie per comunicare il messaggio, abbiamo anche guadagnato un maggiore apprezzamento della natura della comunicazione di marketing in sé. Il tanto lavoro fatto nell’area di costruzione di modelli e di esame teorico ci ha aiutato ad accrescere aree di implementazione.
