Zacharias lived in the hill country southwest of Jerusalem. According to Moses’ instructions, to be a priest, one had to be a descendant of the original high priest, Aaron (Ex. 28:1). Zacharias’ wife, Elizabeth, was also a descendant of Aaron. Both were upright, godly individuals. Only one thing marred their lives: They had grown old without having children (Lk. 1:7).
The priests had been divided into twenty-four divisions, or orders (1 Chron. 24:1–19). Zacharias was of the division of Abijah (Lk. 1:5; see 1 Chron. 24:10). The orders took turns ministering in the temple, a week at a time. Each week, lots were cast regarding temple duties (Lk. 1:9). The most coveted task was offering incense on the altar that stood before the curtain that hid the most Holy Place. This was the closest an ordinary priest could come to that hallowed spot. It was an honor that might come once in a lifetime.
As the story begins, it was Zacharias’ week to serve in the temple—and he had the privilege of offering incense. As he walked into the holy place, he must have been thinking what a special day it was. It was to be even more special than he could have anticipated—for an angel of the Lord named Gabriel appeared to him. In the Bible, only two angels are named: Gabriel (Lk. 1:19, 26; see Dan. 8:16; 9:21) and Michael (Jude 9; Rev. 12:7; see Dan. 10:13, 21; 12:1). The word angel is a transliteration of the Greek word ἄγγελος (aggelos) which literally means ″messenger.″
Translation - French Zacharie vivait dans la montagne au sud-ouest de Jérusalem. Selon les instructions de Moise, afin d’être prêtre, vous deviez être descendant d’Aaron, le premier grand-prêtre (Ex 28 :1). Elizabeth, la femme de Zacharie était également descendante d’Aaron. Ils étaient tous deux irréprochables et justes devant Dieu. Seulement, une chose faisait tache dans leurs vies : Ils étaient avancés en âge sans n’avoir jamais eu d’enfants (Lc 1 :7)
Les prêtres étaient divisés en vingt-quatre divisions ou classes (1 Chron. 24 :1-19). Zacharie était de la classe d’Abija (Lc. 1 :5 ; voir 1 Chron. 24 :10). Les classes servaient au temple à tour de rôle une semaine à la fois. Chaque semaine, un tirage au sort était effectué concernant les obligations du temple (Lc. 1 :9). La tâche la plus convoitée était celle d’offrir de l’encens sur l’autel qui se tenait devant le chandelier devant le Lieu très Saint. C’était l’endroit le plus proche qu’un prêtre ordinaire pouvait approcher avant ce lieu rempli de la gloire de Dieu. C’était un honneur qui ne pouvait arriver qu’une fois dans une vie.
Au début de l’histoire, c’était la semaine de service de Zacharie au temple- et il avait le privilège d’offrir l’encens. Pendant qu’il avançait dans le Lieu Saint, il pensait surement à quel point ce jour était spécial. Il était encore plus spécial qu’il l’aurait imaginé- quand un ange du Seigneur nommé Gabriel lui apparut. Dans la bible, seuls deux anges sont nommés : Gabriel (Lc. 1 :19, 26 ; voir Dan. 8 :16 ; 9 : 21) et Michel (Jd 9 ; Apo. 12 :7 ; voir Dan. 10 :13, 21 ; 12 :1). Born and bred in the city, the story of how he became an English to French and Lingala translator is really quite extraordinary
On graduating in 2014 from the local university, with a Master’s in English to French Translation – he was under 25 at the time – he discovered to his chagrin that there was simply no work around. Only the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is allowed to carry out legal translations, and the profession is not officially recognised in Congo. In fact, he’s aware of fewer than ten translators in the entire country who make a living from their work.
Given the scarcity of opportunities, there was no other option but to apply to the 5-star Radisson Blu in Brazzaville, where he was offered a job as a receptionist and “night auditor”, which involved doing the books, checking the bills and preparing for the next day. In fact, the monthly salary of €200 wasn’t bad – certainly more than a young teacher would earn, but in Dachiny’s mind it was clear he was not destined to be a receptionist. He wasn’t sure what on earth he was doing at the hotel – he was a translator! So determined was he that he made his way one day to the human resources department and told them what was on his mind: “I’m not a receptionist, I’m a translator. Give me something – anything – to translate. Then you’ll know what I can do.
The first document he was given turned out fine, and he put aside the extra money he earned from this and subsequent texts to buy a computer – something that was out of the question on his regular salary. Armed with his laptop, he then began to freelance, and one day decided to jump ship and become a full-time translator. One of his favourite sayings is “The most phenomenal success starts with the craziest dream”.
Dream, or no dream, he first had to appease his mother, who expressed her strong misgivings about him leaving his regular job – as mothers do. But it all turned out well in the end. He now earns over eight times his former salary and is in regular contact with agencies across the world. Life, he says, is pretty smooth.
He found his way early on to ProZ.com and now works regularly on translations from English to French and Lingala. Thanks to insights he received from ProZ, he became the country’s first professional subtitler. It all began when he came across a sermon by an American preacher that inspired him. He taught himself to subtitle, so that he could help others benefit from the same message, and then found work with a US agency specialising in AVT. He went on to teach a friend the same skills so that they could collaborate on subsequent projects.
Dachiny doesn’t have a regular starting time, as he likes to sleep late, but also works late – on medical, marketing and general texts, as well as a range of films and TV shows. And he works hard – sometimes so hard that he forgets to eat and has to be reminded.
Dachiny remains modest about what he has to offer the community. “I’m not there yet,” he says. But within his story hides a tale of persistence, ambition and success that has plenty to say to all of us.
