Source text - Italian A Gioele piace cambiarsi le scarpe. Gli piacciono l’acqua e i cavalli. E gli piace dare da mangiare alle sue foche di plastica.
E’ un tipo di poche parole, lui. Ma sul suo quaderno scrive storie lunghe e intricate di misteriosi animali, leoni domestici, anaconde e ragni-lupo. Disegna anatre che cucinano e zebre a strisce colorate. Ma poi, spesso, accartoccia i disegni perché nessuno li veda.
Dentro, Gioele ha un mondo intero. Solo che nel suo mondo non si può entrare.
Gioele è autistico, che è un po’ come essere una casa senza porta: dall’interno non si può uscire, e da fuori non si sa come varcare la soglia.
Lui, però, sta alla finestra. Guarda, osserva.
E da lì, scatta foto del mondo come lo vede: troppo vicino o troppo lontano, spesso in movimento veloce, a volte amico, a volte impossibile da decifrare.
A Gioele piace anche farsi guardare, ed è così che nasce questo progetto.
Da uno scambio di visioni tra un fotografo che vuole provare ad avvicinarsi a un’interiorità difficile da comprendere e un ragazzino che vuole comunicare con un esterno difficile da raggiungere.
La fotografia diventa strumento di reciproca comprensione, un territorio visivo e visionario in cui incontrarsi, e proiettare all’esterno sensazioni e emozioni mute. Ma la fotografia è anche il filo conduttore di un racconto di formazione. Una formazione delicata e complessa: non solo quella di un bambino di 11 anni che lentamente si trasfoma in uomo, ma anche quella di un essere umano speciale che cresce confrontandosi con un mondo da cui è percepito come diverso e alieno.
L’autismo è considerato dalla comunità scientifica internazionale un disturbo che interessa la funzione cerebrale.
A tutt’oggi, le sue cause sono solo parzialmente conosciute, e la sua origine è oggetto di molteplici e contraddittorie interpretazioni.
Normalmente i sintomi sono rilevabili entro il secondo/terzo anno di età e si manifestano con gravi alterazioni nelle aree della comunicazione verbale e non verbale, dell’interazione sociale e dell’immaginazione o repertorio di interessi. Le persone con autismo presentano spesso problemi comportamentali che nei casi più gravi possono esplicitarsi in atti ripetitivi, anomali, auto o etero-aggressivi.
Al di là delle visioni romantiche spesso associate all’autismo da cinema e letteratura, non sempre dietro l’insuperabile cortina della malattia c’è il “genio”, non sempre dietro i gesti stereotipati, i suoni ripetuti all’infinito, i rituali rinnovati ossessivamente si nasconde uno stupefacente e misterioso talento. Per molti ragazzi, anche solo mangiare a tavola con la famiglia, godere di una passeggiata, imparare a vestirsi è un grande traguardo.
Per Gioele, esprimersi senza dire parolacce o rispondere a una semplice domanda è una conquista.
Questo progetto, quindi, è il viaggio di un ragazzo alla ricerca della sua normalità e alla scoperta dei suoi piccoli talenti.
È il diario di un cambiamento e di una ricerca: di un’identità, di un posto nel mondo, di un modo di comunicare, di una relazione con l’altro. Gioele vuole quello che tutti vogliamo. Soltanto che i suoi obiettivi sono più difficili da raggiungere.
La fine della sua infanzia e l’inzio della sua adolescenza sono un passaggio ancora più delicato, che porta con sé conflitti ancora più aspri.
Dal rapporto col corpo che cambia alle difficoltà di socializzazione, dalla mancanza di strutture di aggregazione in una realtà periferica al dialogo spesso conflittuale con le istituzioni e con la famiglia, tutti i problemi di un normale adolescente sono amplificati e estremizzati per un ragazzo autistico.
Per queste ragioni, seguire la sua crescita attraverso la macchina fotografica diventa un cammino di comprensione e di analisi: del mistero della sua malattia e del mistero della nostra identità.
Translation - English Gioele likes to change his shoes. He likes water and horses. And he likes to feed his plastic seals.
He, well he is a guy of few words. But on his notebook he writes long and complex stories about misterious animals:tamed lions, anacondas and spider-wolves. He draws cooking ducks and zebras with coloured stripes. But then, often, he crumples the drawings so nobody sees them.
Inside, Gioele has a huge world. The only thing is that in his world nobody can come in.
Gioele is autistic, which means he is inside a house without a door: from the inside you can't go out and from the outside you don't know how to go through the doorway.
But he stays at the window, looking, observing.
And from there, he takes pictures of the world like he sees it: too close or too far, often moving fastly, sometimes as a friend, sometimes impossible to decode.
Gioele also likes that others look at him, and this is the way the prodject is born.
From the exchange of points of view between a photographer, that wants to try to get closer to the difficult inner-part, and a kid who wants to comunicate with an world difficult to reach.
Photography becomes an instrument of mutual comprehension, a visual and visionary place where to meet and project to the outside voiceless sensations and emotions.
But photography is also the guiding string of an educational story.
A delicate and complex formation: non only the one of an eleven year old child that slowly is changing into a man, but also the one of a special humain beeing that grows comparing himself with a world from which is percieved as different and an alien.
Autism is considerated by the international scientific comunity as a mental disorder.
Since now, its causes are partially knowed and its origin is the topic of various and conflicting interpretations.
Normally the symptoms are found whithin the second/third year and show themselves with heavy alterations in the verbal and non verbal comunication areas, of the social interaction, of the imagination or the list of hobbies.
People affected by austism often show behaving problems which, in worse cases, can manifest in repeatitive, abnormal acts and being agressive with himself and others.
Not considering the Romantic visions often associated to autism by cinema and literature, there isn't always, behind the inbreakable courtin of the illness, a “Zeiteist”; non always behind stereotyped gestures, sounds repeated again and again, rituals obssesly renewed, a misterious and extraordinary talent is hidden.
For many, just only eating all together with their family, enjoying a walk, learning how to dress themselves is already a great success.
For Gioele, expressing himself without saying bad words or answering to a simple question is an achievement.
So, this prodject is a voyage of a child who is searching his own normality and discovering his own little talents.
It's a diary of a change and a research: of an idientity, of a place in the world, of a way to communicate, of a link with another person like you.
Gioele wants what we all want. It's only that his goals are more difficult to reach.
The end of his childhood and the beginning of his adolescence are a even more delicate transition, that brings with it harder conflicts.
From the relationship with the body that changes to the difficulties to socialize, from the lack of aggregation structures in a suburban reality to the dialogue, often more a conflict, with the Istitutions and the family: all the problems of a normal teenager are amplified and even more extreme for an autistic child.
For these reasons, following his growth through the photocamera becomes an understanding and analysis path: the mistery of his illness and the mistery of our identity.

What I love most about languages is that the truly represent the people speaking it. You already know someone before actually knowing him or her. Of course this doen't occur always, but in many cases I've known it does.
Besides reading, I really like to take the opportunity for a trip now and again.
