When our eyes open for the first time as our sense of vision switches on...
When our lungs prepare for their very first breath as we get ready to face the outside world, and survive on our own.
It all must come together with exquisite precision. Because one mis-timed event or faulty gene could have life changing consequences.
9 Months That Made You
To survive on the outside there is one part of the body that must ready for anything.
It gives your body its shape and strength… It is the skeleton.
An adult skeleton is made up of over 200 bones, which give us speed and movement…
They protect our vital organs.
And muscles attached to the ribs enable our lungs to expand and fill with air.
Without our skeleton to protect us – we would struggle to survive.
I always had a feeling she wasn’t quiet normal.
But I never dreamt it would be something as serious as this.
We all began without a single bone in our bodies.
As the body first takes shape it begins by growing cartilage – the soft, flexible tissue that forms the foundation of what in time becomes the skeleton.
Then over several months a magical process unfolds – bit by bit this cartilage starts to harden into bone.
By week 25 – the pelvis – our largest bone is forming.
It’s a very delicate process; if it’s disrupted you’ll be floppy with little support or shape.
Nine year old Janelly was born without the ability to make bones.
I started noticing it about three or four weeks after her birth.
She wasn’t growing, she wasn’t putting on weight.
It got really really bad.
We got a photographer to take this photo of Janelly because they told us she only had a few days to live.
Our bones are formed by special cells called osteoblasts.
They swarm around the skeleton coating the soft cartilage with a hard calcium-based mineral.
But this process produces a damaging chemical, which stops our bones from hardening.
Translation - Czech Od chvíle početí hodiny tikají. Buňky se množí, dochází k chemickým procesům, je vytvořena kostní tkáň a krev. Jedná se o 9 měsíců precizní biologie. V této epizodě se zaměříme na poslední týdny tohoto procesu. Když se naše oči poprvé otevřou, náš smysl pro vidění se také změní. Když se naše plíce připraví na své první nadechnutí, jsme připraveni čelit okolnímu světu a být schopni sami přežít. Všechno se musí sejít s mimořádnou přesností, protože jedna špatně načasovaná událost nebo špatný gen by mohli ovlivnit celý náš budoucí život.

Abychom venku přežili, jedna část našeho těla musí být připravena na cokoliv. Tato část dodává tělu sílu a tvar.
Je to naše kostra. Kostra dospělého člověka se skládá z více jak 200 kostí, které nám poskytují rychlost a pohyb. Chrání naše životně důležité orgány. A svaly, upínající se na žebra, umožnují našim plicím se roztáhnout a nabrat vzduch.
Bez naší kostry, která nás chrání, bychom těžko přežili.
Vždy jsem měla pocit, že není jako ostatní děti, nikdy jsem si ale nemyslela, že by to mohlo být tak vážné.
Na začátku nikdo z nás neměl ani jednu kost v těle. Jak tělo začne dostávat tvar, první se začne tvořit chrupavka - měkká, pružná tkáň, která tvoří základ toho, z čeho se později vyvine kostra. Poté během několika měsíců dojde k magickému procesu, kdy se kousek po kousku tato tkáň přetvoří v kosti.
V 25. týdnu se formuje pánev a další velké kosti.
Je to velmi delikátní proces. Pokud by byl přerušen, zůstaly byste ohební a beztvarý.
9letá Džanely se narodila bez schopnosti tvořit kostní tkáň.
Všimla jsme si toho asi 3-4 týdny po jejím narození. Nerostla, nenabírala na váze, začalo to být opravdu velmi zlé. Najmuli jsme si fotografa, který pořídil tem snímek Džanely, protože nám řekli, že jí zbývá jen pár dnů života.
Vlastně jen pár hodin.
Ano, jen pár hodin.
Naše kosti se formují pomocí speciálních buněk, které se nazývají osteoblasty. Rojí se kolem kostry, a pokrývají měkkou chrupavku tvrdou vrstvou minerálu na bázi vápníku. Tento proces však produkuje škodlivou chemikálii, která zabraňuje našim kostem v tvrdnutí.
