Source text - English This book is structured around the recollections of seven people who have worked for ISO over the last 50 years. As a way of commemorating the history of an organization. this approach has both attractive features and limitations.
One of ns amractive features is that it captures something of the experience of being involved with ISO. As Larry 0_ Eicher. the Secretary-General of ISO. writes in his Foreword .. The essence of ISO's history. .. could not be expressed in cold facts and numbers ... it is made up of the visions. aspirations. doubts. successes and failures of the people who. over the past fifty years. have created this rather remarkable organization ... Consequently. there is no decade-by-decade summary of committees. resolutions and numbers of products in this book. However. the introductions to each of the seven .. interviews .. give background historical information about the topics covered.
The recollections in this book are edited extracts from interviews that lasted about four hours. Though the contributors have approved the fin al text, and several have written their own material into the text. inevitably much of what they have done and witnessed has been left our. This is one limitation of the book. If you know ISO well. you will find another limitation - many themes. episodes and individuals from the organization's 50-year history are missing.
However. this book is not the end of ISO's attempt to draw together the strands of its 50-year history We are setting up a .. history page .. on ISO's lnternet sire. where we hope to gather and publish further personal recollections and information for the archives. If you enjoy what you read in this book. or disagree with it. if the material sparks off your own memories. of makes you want to pay tribute to a particular individual. please contact us. In a book that is based on personal testimony. I will say a few words. I have spent only a few words with ISO I have liked the people I have met. I value my laboriously acquired knowledge of the organization. and I hope to learn more. May ISO enjoy its celebrations in September 1997.

ISO 사무총장인 Larry O Eicher가 서문에서 밝혔듯이 ISO 역사의 본질을 표현하기란 쉽지 않다. 이 책에는 지난 50년이 넘도록 애를 쓴 사람들의 성공과 실패, 비전과 영감이 담겨있다. ISO를 향한 수고와 노력으로 이렇게 훌륭한 기구가 생겨난 것이다. 사실 이 책에서는 위원회에서 나온 결의안이나 위원회에서 발행한 표준을 자세히 다루지 않는다. 대신 7인의 인터뷰를 통해 각 주제별로 ISO 역사를 되짚어볼 것이다.
각각의 회고록은 4시간에 걸쳐 인터뷰한 내용을 편집한 것이다. 인터뷰한 사람들이 자신의 회고록을 최종 승인하고, 일부는 직접 회고록을 작성하기도 했지만, 실제 경험담과 목격담 중 일부는 생략되었을 것이다. 이는 어쩔 수 없는 이 책의 한계이다. ISO를 잘 아는 사람이 이 책을 본다면 ISO에서 50년간 있었던 다양한 사건과 이야기들이 많이 빠졌다는 것을 알아챌 것이다.

Overview
The MXC416 and MXC420 are gooseneck microphones for use with the Microflex® Complete (MXC) digital conference system and the Microflex® Complete Wireless (MXCW) conference system. The gooseneck design is highly flexible, allowing precise positioning by each speaker. The microphone is available with single or dual flexible sections and can be used with all MXC / MXCW conference and interpreter units. The microphone includes a cartridge with a cardioid polar pattern and the frequency response is tailored to improve speech intelligibility and reduce feedback. The microphone is also compatible with Microflex cartridges with other polar patterns. A snap-fit foam windscreen that reduces plosives or wind noise is included. The microphone features CommShield® Technology which provides improved immunity to RF noise caused by mobile phones, tablets, or similar devices nearby. A two-color LED ring illuminates when the conference unit is active or in request-to-speak mode. This clearly identifies the speaker to other members of the meeting, even under bright lighting. The microphone is detachable with a 10-pin modular connector. When used with compatible conference units, the microphone can be locked with a hex key to prevent unauthorized removal.

Source text - English This experiment should bring the students to the realization
that radioactivity is a natural process. Ever since its
origin, life on earth has been continuously exposed to ionizing
radiation. Radioactive materials in the earth are a
major source of this natural radioactivity. They either act
externally on the living being as terrestial radiation or are
inhaled in the form of the radioactive inert gas Radon.
In addition, the surface of the earth is ceaselessly exposed
to a stream of ionizing radiation of different types and energies
from the sun, and also from distant galaxies. An average
of about 1 million cells of a human body are hit by a
ray every second. The human immune system is capable
of extensively repairing the cell damage caused, however,
so that life on our planet has been capable of development
despite the influence of this level of radiation.
As a result of terrestial and cosmic radiation, a Geiger-
Müller counter registers a radioactivity count even in the
absence of a source of radioactivity. This dose rate is called
the background count rate, and must be taken into consideration,
especially when weakly radioactive substances
are examined.
The background count rate registered by a standard
Geiger-Müller counter is quite small, and can lead to a
wrong estimation of the actual intensity of the ambient radiation,
as only about 1% of the gamma quanta which penetrate
into the counter tube generate an impulse by the
photoelectric or Compton effect. To get an idea of the actual
number of gamma quanta which traverse through the
counting tube volume within the time of measurement, you
must multiply the base level registered by a factor of 100.
A comparison of the volume of the counting tube with the
volume of a human body then helps you to imagine how
large the number of gamma quanta hitting the human body
is. Such considerations could be chosen as a starting point
for an objective discussion on how dangerous radioactive
materials are.
Notes on set-up and procedure
As this experiment serves as an introductory experiment to
nuclear physics measurement techniques, information on
how to operate the counter and the Geiger-Müller counting
tube should be given before measurements are made. The
danger that touching the counting tube window can
destruct it should be particularly stressed. As a matter of
principle, the students should therefore only remove the
protective cap shortly before beginning measurements
and replace it directly after they are finished.

방사능의 출현 이후, 지구상의 생명체는 꾸준히 전리 방사선에 노출되었다. 땅 속의 방사능 물질이 자연적으로 발생하는 방사능의 주요 원인이다. 방사능 물질은 외부적으로는 지구 복사선으로 생물체 작용하거나 방사성 비활성 기체인 라돈의 형태로 흡수된다. 또한, 지구의 표면은 다양한 전리 방사선의 흐름과 먼 은하계로부터 온 에너지 및 태양 에너지에 끊임없이 노출된다. 인간의 몸을 형성하는 세포 중 평균 백만 개가 매 순간 광선에 쏘인다. 인간의 면역 체계는 손상된 세포를 재생할 수 있고, 지구상의 생명체는 피폭에도 진화할 수 있었다. 우주와 지구복사선 때문에 가이거-뮐러 계수기는 방사성 물질이 없는 곳에서도 방사능 계수를 기록했던 것이다. 이 선량률은 기본 계수율이라 불리며, 특히 미미하게 방사능이 검출 될 때 더욱 중요하게 여겨야 한다.
가이거-뮐러 계수기가 정한 기본 계수율은 그 수치가 매우 작아 실제 주변의 방사선 세기와 다른 잘못된 추정치를 이끌어 낼 수 있다. 계수관을 관통할 수 있는 정도의 1% 감마선 양자는 광전자를 이용한 충격량 또는 콤프턴 효과를 만들어 낼 수 있다. 측정 시간 동안 계수관을 통과하는 감마선 양자 양의 실제 값을 얻으려면 기록된 기준 값에 100을 곱해야 한다. 계수관의 크기와 사람의 크기를 비교해 본다면 얼마나 많은 감마선 양자가 사람 몸을 쏘는지 짐작이 갈 것이다. 이런 점에 주목하여 방사능 물질이 얼마나 위험한가에 대한 토론을 할 수도 있을 것이다.
실험 준비와 과정
이 실험이 핵물리학 측정 기술을 위한 도입실험이기 때문에 계수와 가이거-뮐러 계수기를 어떻게 작동하는지 측정하기 전에 알아야 한다. 계수관 입구 유리판에 손을 대면 깨질 수 있어 특히 조심해야 한다. 원칙적으로 학생들은 측정을 시작하기 전에 보호 마개를 제거해야 하며 측정이 끝난 뒤에는 제자리에 두어야 한다.
