Source text - English The Magic of Rosh Hashanah - The Recipe for Successful Duality
A whole month is dedicated to the Jewish New Year (a.k.a. Rosh Hashanah). Peculiar, isn’t it? Here is the transition from the current year to the new one takes place during only one day.
The matter is that, Rosh Hashanah is not about indicating the years’ transition, but rather about one’s practical preparation towards a successful year. And in order to achieve that, one day is not enough.
What does the preparation include?
1. Internalization that the world does not behave according to the laws of logic as we know them, but rather according to a different legality. It is a fact that one who pursues after respect, for instance, does not get respect, only belittlement. The one who demands attention eventually gets rejection. A jealous person drifts his spouse away from him instead of bringing her closer to him, and the domineering one does not feel secure as he would have expected. The logic indicates that by one’s control one achieves confidence. The reality laughs in our faces. The stories in the bible dwell upon this paradox and show us how control gets the opposite result from the desirable one at each holiday. Passover brings Pharaoh as an example to the control, which eventually destroyed the Egyptian empire. Purim shows the traps waiting for each domineering person, including for a powerful king such as Ahasuerus, who reigned from India to Ethiopia. History is replete with rulers who terminated their lives as slaves. The legality, according to which life conducts, is opposite to our logic, and the response over time is always in the opposite direction to the action, since we cannot alter the legality but only to miss the purpose.
2. The first guidance is in the comprehensive level and the second one is in the personal level. If we comprehend the legality, according to which life conducts - we will comprehend how we miss the purpose or in the customary words - we will identify our sins. The sin does not refer solely to deeds such as lie and theft but rather to every deed, which is opposed to the legality, according to which life conducts. Control is one of the obvious examples. It does not wish (= does not permit you) to meet a certain friend, due to him being a heavy gambler, drunkard and unfaithful to his wife. She, on her part (and there are those who would say “justifiably”) tries to dominate all kinds of influences on you, and you, on your part, gets angry for her not believing in your competences to face your friend’s effect over you, hurting due to the fact that you are forced to give up on a friend you like and lies to her in case you have made a different decision. Her control did not achieve confidence but rather a lie. And obviously, on the contrary as well: If he is the one approving every one of your financial spending plans, assigning you with tasks during your work hours, forbidding you to put on skimpy dresses or meeting with friends who are too mischievous at his taste - he will achieve resentment, anger and hatred. These are the laws of the soul.
The two days of Rosh Hashanah are directed to illuminate one’s discretion and the whole month is intended for identifying our goal miscues: aggression, passivity, fears, control, disrespectful, inconsiderate, tantrums, falsities, sloth, recklessness, criticism, intrusion……. For all that two days are truly insufficient.
It is difficult for us to locate the "goal miscues” for two reasons: the first, because self-criticism is contrary to the human nature. For this, an entire month is dedicated to a person, the month of Tishrei, which is entirely designated for locating those miscues by applying brave and honest self-criticism. For those who wish to get a more accurate, objective and a faster identification can turn to a professional. The second reason for the difficulty in identifying our "goal miscues” is lack of an alternative. If I do not control how will I achieve confidence? After we internalize that control does not achieve confidence in any case, we will reach other insights, which guide us into healthy progression under conditions of uncertainty. Here, too, one should hurry, because the era in which we live is an age in which nothing is certain. The livelihood is not as safe as ever, the duality is not as secure as ever, loyalty has became conditional and friendship has a price in our days. This alteration is not mentioned in the books of fairy tales, but it is engraved in our personal life stories.
Where will your snowball be rolling to this year?
"Prime" (“Rosh” in Hebrew) is not a beginning but rather a time in which the seed, that will grow throughout the year, is planted. Within this very seed all the potential for the coming year is embodied, and during the two days of Rosh Hashanah one is being enabled to choose the seed one desires. That is, the reality of the following year. If one recognizes where one is now missing the purpose - it is unlikely to be repeated by one throughout the entire year. A genuine modification results in a different chain of reactions causing one’s life story to change this year. If you are in a relationship with a passive partner, who sits at home waiting for you to make plans and initiate recreations while he only gets to decide whether to approve or refuse - you will probably be disappointed. The disappointment causes criticism and your criticism towards him results in his criticism toward you. A snowball, rolling under the laws of the soul, will explode at some point. Imagine yourself that your partner has realized his passivity 'misses the goal’ and he sets himself a purpose (a realistic one): to initiate a recreation for you at least once a month. Where to would the snowball be rolling then?
The majority of us does not believe in a change and say "this is the way I am”, however, the legality in the universe is permanent, and if one derogates one component and adds another one - one changes one’s life story. Therefore, the laws of the soul allow one to succeed tomorrow in what one failed yesterday. A person who wants a better result in the coming year, should act in accordance with the laws of the soul. These laws are referred as the laws of the morale in the Kabala, and this is the right month to internalize them.

לראש השנה היהודי מוקדש חודש מלא. מוזר לא? הרי המעבר משנה אחת לשנה החדשה הוא רק יום אחד.
העניין הוא שראש השנה היהודי איננו מוקדש לציון מעברי השנים אלא להכנה מעשית שלך לקראת שנה מוצלחת. ולשם כך לא מספיק יום אחד.
מה כוללת ההכנה?
1. הפנמה, שהעולם לא מתנהג על פי חוקי ההיגיון שאנו מכירים אלא על פי חוקיות אחרת. עובדה, מי שרודף אחרי כבוד למשל, לא מקבל כבוד אלא זלזול. מי שדורש תשומת לב מקבל בסופו של דבר דחייה. הקנאי מרחיק מעצמו את בת-הזוג שלו במקום לקרב אותה אליו והשתלטן לא מרגיש בטוח כפי שציפה. ההיגיון אומר שאם נשלוט נשיג בטחון. המציאות צוחקת לנו בפנים. סיפורי התנ"ך מתעכבים על הפרדוכס הזה ומראים לנו בכל חג כיצד שליטה משיגה את התוצאה ההפוכה מהרצוי. חג פסח מביא את פרעה כדוגמא לשליטה שהחריבה לבסוף את האימפריה המצרית. חג פורים מראה את המלכודות שמחכות לכל שתלטן, כולל למלך רב עוצמה כאחשוורוש, שמלך מהודו ועד כוש. ההיסטוריה רצופה בשליטים שסיימו את חייהם כעבדים. החוקיות שעל פיה מתנהלים החיים הפוכה להיגיון שלנו והתגובה לאורך זמן היא תמיד בכיוון הפוך לפעולה, כי אנחנו לא יכולים לשנות את החוקיות אלא רק להחטיא את המטרה.
2. ההכוונה הראשונה היא ברמה הכוללת וההכוונה השנייה היא ברמה האישית. אם נקלוט את החוקיות שעל פיה החיים מתנהלים – נקלוט כיצד אנחנו מחטיאים את המטרה, או במילים המקובלות – נזהה את החטאים שלנו. החטא איננו מתייחס רק למעשים כמו שקר וגניבה אלא לכל מעשה שהוא מנוגד לחוקיות שעל פיה מתנהלים החיים. שליטה היא אחת הדוגמאות הברורות. היא לא רוצה (=לא מרשה לך) שתתראה עם חבר מסוים, כי הוא מהמר כבד, שתיין ולא נאמן לאשתו. היא מצידה (ויש שיאמרו גם "בצדק") מנסה לשלוט על סוגי ההשפעות עליך ואתה מצדך כועס על שהיא לא מאמינה ביכולות שלך לעמוד מול ההשפעה שלו, כואב כי אתה צריך לוותר על חבר שאתה אוהב ומשקר לה אם החלטת אחרת. השליטה שלה לא השיגה ביטחון אלא שקר. וכמובן גם להיפך: אם הוא זה שמאשר כל תכנית להוצאה כספית שלך, מטיל עליך משימות בשעות העבודה שלך, אוסר עליך ללבוש שמלות חושפניות או לפגוש חברות שובבות מידי לטעמו – הוא ישיג מירמור, כעס ושטנה. אלה חוקי הנפש.
היומיים של ראש השנה מכוונים להאיר את שיקול דעתו של האדם והחודש המלא מכוון לזיהוי החטאות המטרה שלנו: אגרסיביות, פאסיביות, פחדים, שליטה, חוסר כבוד, חוסר התחשבות, התפרצויות, שקרים, עצלנות, פזיזות, ביקורתיות, חודרנות, עצלנות....... לזה באמת לא מספיק יומיים.
קשה לנו לאתר את "החטאות המטרה" משתי סיבות: האחת, מפני שביקורת עצמית מנוגדת לטבע האדם. לשם כך הוקדש לאדם חודש שלם, חודש תשרי, שכל כולו מכוון לאיתור אותן החטאות על ידי ביקורת עצמית אמיצה וכנה. למי שרוצה לקבל זיהוי מדויק, אובייקטיבי ומהיר יותר יכול לפנות לאיש מקצוע. הסיבה השנייה לקושי באיתור "החטאות המטרה" שלנו היא היעדר חלופה. אם אני לא אשלוט איך אני אשיג ביטחון? אחרי שנפנים ששליטה ממילא לא משיגה בטחון, נגיע לתובנות אחרות שמכוונות אותנו להתנהלות בריאה בתנאים של אי-וודאות. גם כאן כדאי להזדרז, כי העידן שבו אנו חיים הוא עידן שבו שום דבר לא בטוח. הפרנסה לא בטוחה כמו פעם, הזוגיות לא בטוחה כמו פעם, נאמנות הפכה מותנית ולחברות יש כבר מחיר. השינוי הזה לא מוזכר בספרי האגדות אבל חרוט בסיפורי החיים האישיים שלנו.
