Environ 6,5 millions de personnes réparties dans la quasi-totalité des provinces congolaises sont en crise alimentaire et des moyens d’existence aigue (phase 3 : crise et phase 4 : urgence) et ont besoin d’une assistance, selon les dernières analyses du Cadre intégré de classification de la sécurité alimentaire (IPC) pour le premier semestre 2015. Selon les experts en sécurité alimentaire, le nombre total de personnes en crise alimentaire et des moyens d’existence aigue a baissé de près de 7% par rapport au second semestre de l’année passée. Cependant, le nombre de personnes en situation d’urgence (phase 4) a augmenté de plus de 500 000.
Ces personnes sont principalement dans les provinces de l’est touchées par des violences armées : Katanga (le triangle de la mort : Manono – Mitwaba – Pweto), Maniema (Punia), Sud-Kivu (Shabunda) et Province Orientale (Irumu). En dehors des zones affectées par des conflits, seule la zone de Djera dans la Province de l’Equateur est en phase d’urgence suite à la crise liée à l’épidémie de la maladie à virus Ebola. Pour les autres provinces notamment du centre et de l’ouest, les maladies de cheptel et des cultures ainsi qu’un contexte général de pauvreté sont parmi les facteurs déstabilisant la sécurité alimentaire des ménages.
Translation - English More than 6 million people suffering acute food and livelihood crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Around 6.5 million people, spread throughout the Congolese provinces, are suffering from acute food and livelihood crisis (phase 3: crisis and phase 4: emergency), and are in urgent need of aid, according to the latest analysis by ‘The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification’ (IPC) for the first half of 2015. According to food security experts, the total number of people suffering acute food and livelihood crisis has dropped by nearly 7% since the second half of last year, but the number of people in emergency (phase 4) has risen by more than half a million.
These people are mostly in the eastern provinces, affected by armed conflict: Katanga (Manono, Mitwaba and Pweto), Maniema (Punia), South Kivu (Shabunda), and Orientale Province (Irumu). Other than these, only the territory of Djera in the Equateur Province is in the emergency phase, following the effects of an Ebola outbreak. For the other provinces, particularly in the centre and the west, livestock and crop disease as well as a general context of poverty are among the factors destabilising food security.
I have over 20 years experience as a teacher of modern foreign languages (French, German, Spanish) in British schools.
