One of the challenges of mobile is that people have never had access to so much ‘stuff’. So how do we create cut-through in a world where everybody can watch virtually any movie or listen to any song at the touch of a button? The key is to create content that people will find meaningful – that will stop their thumb as they scroll through the News Feed. At Facebook, we’re focussed on making sure more of the content that people see in their Feed feels relevant to them.
It’s important that people find advertising relevant because it’s part of the total experience on Facebook – it can’t be decoupled from other posts. But even as online experiences in general have improved dramatically, becoming more immersive and intuitive, most digital ads haven’t kept up. We’ve all experienced bad ads: ads that obscure the content we’re trying to read, ads that slow down load times or ads that try to sell us things we have no interest in buying. Bad ads are disruptive and a waste of the scarcest resource we own: our time.
