English to Arabic: The fabric of life General field: Other
Source text - English The fabric of life
While simple, the traditional lifestyle was enriched by many crafts and adornments. Silversmithing, embroidery, weaving and basket-making were crafts that contributed to a rich cultural fabric, involving the whole community.
The men would shear the sheep, camels and goats, and bring the wool to the women who would clean and prepare it. Weavers would gather in small groups to spin and weave, even as they exchanged news of family and those around them. Sometimes poetry and song would find their way into the gathering. Younger members of the family were initiated into the tasks under the watchful eye of elders.
Much of what appears decorative has very practical roots. Jewellery, for instance, often formed a portable means of carrying wealth. In buildings, this was seen in gypsum windows set in patterns, which let in gentle breeze and rays of light while protecting the inhabitants from the harshness of glare and dust.
Women painstakingly wove the very fabric of life – the material for making tents came from looms, as did intricate embroidery that adorned the dresses of the women. Macramé has been widely practised for making various materials for use in men and women’s clothing.
Sadu weaving, which involves using camel fur, sheep’s wool, goat hair, as well as a group of tools, such as fluffers, spindles, wood wedges, horns and a loom to weave traditional materials, is now on UNESCO’s heritage list.
Date palm fronds found their way into homes too, since they were used to weave panels that were used in homes as walls and roof. Smaller items included baskets and cones for covering food.
Both creative and technical aspects of these crafts were unique and told of life. Textiles and rugs would be rich with symbolic geometric forms and inscriptions. Often these were inspired by the desert with triangles, dots or small pyramids being depicted. Other artistic symbols and inscriptions included palm trees, flowers, camels, sheep, hawks, coffee making tools, Quranic verses, crescents and domes.
Translation - Arabic
