После заключения Кремлем долгожданного договора о дружбе и добрососедстве с Китаем, президентом России Путиным В.В. и Председателем КНР Ху Цзиньтао 14 октября 2004 года подписано дополнение к соглашению, о российско-китайской государственной границе, согласно которому произошла передача территории общей площадью 337 квадратных километров: острова Большой (верховья реки Аргунь Читинской области) и островов Тарабаров и части Большого Уссурийского.
Передача островов Китаю грозит стратегической безопасности Хабаровска, Дальнего Востока и России. При начале военных действий китайская армия будет в Хабаровске через два – три часа, потому часть острова Большой Уссурийский принадлежит Китаю, а другая часть России с выходом в центр Хабаровска. Раньше на острове был укрепрайон, в случае военных действий он прикрывал город, теперь его нет, он ликвидирован. Город остался без прикрытия, при взятии города будет взят железнодорожный мост на Амуре и перерезана железная и автомобильная дороги, Дальний Восток будет отрезан от России. Дальнейшая его судьба будет решена Китаем в считанные недели. Россия помочь ничем практически не сможет, у неё нет сил и возможностей. Армия развалена и деморализована. Вооружение по большей части пришло в негодность, нового нет или поступает в войска в ограниченном количестве. После модернизации армии от неё ничего не осталось, кроме 85 необученных бригад, которые ни разу не участвовали в реальных боевых действиях. Массовое сокращение армии, офицерского состава оставили Дальний Восток и Восточную Сибирь без силового прикрытия от внешнего врага.
Если придется перебрасывать войска из центральной части России, то это не реально, у нас нет соответствующей техники и средств. Китайские диверсанты перережут железную дорогу, взорвут уязвимые места - мосты и тоннели, а для большей дестабилизации положения - гидроэлектростанцию или каскад гидроэлектростанций.
Для большей дестабилизации диверсионные акты проведут на Урале и в Центральной части России на линиях электропередач, газопроводах и нефтепроводах, потому что эти объекты сложнее охранять из-за их протяженности и разветвленности. Если диверсионно-террористические акты пройдут зимой, то города останутся без электроэнергии и теплоснабжения, начнется паника и хаос, люди будут бороться за тепло и еду. Начнутся грабежи и разбои, будут разграблены магазины и продовольственные базы и склады. Власть будет не в состоянии ничего сделать и исправить ситуацию, так как кроме словоблудства и пустословия в её резерве ничего нет. Здесь пустопорожними обещаниями ситуацию не исправишь. В России наступит коллапс.
Исполнители найдутся внутри китайской диаспоры с ее разветвленной агентурной и разведывательной структурой, уже, видимо, имеющей свои боевые диверсионно-террористические отряды с полным арсеналом вооружения и средств для проведения спецопераций на территории России.
Китай готовится к войне, он с каждым годом увеличивает свой бюджет. На 2010 год он равен 78 миллиардам долларам, а скрытая его часть может составлять еще 30-40 процентов от этой суммы.
В своем арсенале китайцы имеют вооружения от стратегических ракет до современного стрелкового оружия. Китайские ракеты могут долететь до Москвы, Нижнего Новгорода, а Урал, Восточная Сибирь, Камчатка, Дальний Восток находятся полностью под прицелом китайских ракет. Авиация Китая свободно может бороздить наши воздушные просторы на востоке, потому что там нет практически противовоздушной обороны.
Военно-морской флот КНР по качеству вооружения и количеству судов уже обошел Российский, а субмарины Китая свободно могут плавать в приграничных водах России.
Народно-освободительная армия Китая (НОАК) насчитывает 2,25 миллиона солдат, в случаи военных действий может поставить под ружье до 208,1 миллионов солдат, хорошо вооруженных и обученных. Китай регулярно проводит учения НОАК по отработке наступательных операций, с переброской войск на расстояние до 2000 километров, этого хватит как раз, чтобы дойти до Байкала.
Китай не только в вдоль общей границы с Россией ведет, активное приготовление к военным действиям он готовится к войне с Россией в Арктике. Он развернул программу по строительству ледоколов, его ледокольный флот пополнился первым ледоколом «Снежный дракон». Цель Поднебесной - захват России с севера и контроль арктического маршрута.
Тот, кто получит контроль над арктическим маршрутом, будет контролировать новый путь мировой экономики – говорят в Поднебесной.
Целью использования ледоколов может быть проводка десантных кораблей через льды Охотского моря к городам Магадан, Палана, Охотск, Николаевск – на - Амуре, а также к острову Сахалин, полуострову Камчатка (городам Петропавловск – Камчатский и Усть –Камчатск, Корф), далее Берингово море, город Анадырь, Берингов пролив, выход в Северный Ледовитый Океан, вдоль северного побережья России с заходом в устье рек Лена, Енисей, Обь, с высадкой десанта и взятием стратегически значимых объектов и городов. Река Лена - Вилюйск, Якутск, море Лаптевых губа Буор-Хая - порт Тикси. Река Енисей - города Дудинка, Норильск, Игарка, Тура. Река Обь - Салехард, Лабытнанги потом железной дорогой на Воркуту, Югра, Тобольск дальше на Тюмень, эта десантная операция принесет России катастрофические потери, она лишится всех крупных нефтегазовых месторождений.
Начало НОАК крупномасштабной наступательной операций вдоль всей сухопутной границы и высадка десанта на севере России завершится полной, быстрой победой Китая и отторжением территории России до Урала. Проведению Китаем морских десантных операций будет способствовать то, что у России нет постоянной сухопутной связи с этими территориями и городами, единственная связь это река – река или море – река. Для этого не нужно большого числа войск, достаточно хорошо обученной и подготовленной роты или батальона, так как местные жители и воинские части, находящие на этой территории не смогут оказать большого военного сопротивления. После того как вся территория до Урала будет захвачена, россияне будут депортированы за Урал или уничтожены. Победителей не судят.
Российское руководство, понимая, что с помощью не обученных бригад безопасность страны и свою не защитишь, во имя сохранения целостности и неприкосновенности России в будущем конфликте с Китаем или другим агрессором, принимает военную доктрину.
Согласно новой доктрине Россия оставляет за собой право применения ядерного оружия в случае угрозы существованию государства, это не от хорошей жизни, нам просто нечем воевать, нет солдат, хорошо обученных и подготовленных встать на защиту Родины, а офицерские кадры разогнаны и деморализованы.
Армейская реформа по переводу армии на контрактную профессиональную службу провалилась.
Руководство страны добивались от армии лояльности, а не профессионализма.
Китайцы принимают закон о мобилизации. Закон направлен на улучшение системы оборонной мобилизации страны, определяет ее основные принципы и механизм осуществления. Согласно новому закону, правительство в таких обстоятельствах имеет право усиливать контроль в управлении финансами, транспортом, торговлей, средствами связи, деятельностью СМИ, включая Интернет, использованием питьевых и продовольственных источников.
Китайцы начинают создавать стратегические запасы газа, предполагается соорудить 10 гигантских хранилищ газа, а также создать стратегические запасы нефти на случай непредвиденных обстоятельств и войны.
Китай активно строит огромные подземные бункеры для эвакуации при землетрясениях, пишет агентство Синьхуа. Один из них будет открыт в ближайшее время в центре мегаполиса Нанкин. "Подземный город" площадью 16 гектаров сможет вместить до 6,6 тысячи человек. В нем будут находиться не только временные жилища, но и госпитали, продуктовые склады, печи по сжиганию мусора. Люди смогут автономно прожить в таком бункере в течение месяца. В столице КНР уже действуют 15 сейсмоубежищ, которые могут принять до 200 тысяч человек. Это не сейсмоубежища, а настоящие бомбоубежища на случай ядерной войны с Россией, ответ Китая на новую доктрину России о применении первой ядерного оружия в случаи агрессии.
Китай начал перенос военных предприятий из больших городов в провинции в глубь страны и рассредоточивать их по территории, это делается для того, что бы противнику в случаи войны их труднее было уничтожить.
Принятая в Китае программа строительства вооруженных сил состоит из трех этапов.
Первый этап - ВС достигли способности защитить жизненные интересы Китая, в том числе путем успешного ведения локальных войн низкой и средней интенсивности по всему периметру границы, а также «эффективно сдерживать и устрашать потенциальных противников».
Второй этап - ВС должны превратиться в силу, «гарантирующую расширение стратегических границ и жизненного пространства».
Третий этап - должны быть созданы ВС, способные «одержать победу в войне любого масштаба и продолжительности с использованием всех средств и способов ведения вооруженной борьбы».
После завершения третьего этапа у НОАК не будет соперников, Китай будет расширять стратегические границы жизненного пространства далеко за пределы границ КНР.
Оборонять территории Восточной Сибири и Дальнего Востока России практически нечем. Что делает руководство страны для укрепления целостности и безопасности родины?
Высшее образование переведено на коммерческую основу, ликвидированы научные лаборатории и КБ, практически прекращено финансирование научных исследований и разработок, ученые вынуждены уехать от безденежья и нищеты за границу.
В промышленности сотни заводов остановлены и разрушены, безвозвратно потеряны уникальные технологии, рабочих просто выгнали на улицу.
С земли Российской исчезли тысячи деревень. Вымерли миллионы мужиков Российских от беспробудной пьянки, которая творится в Российской деревне, от безделья нищеты и безвыходности.
В деревне нет работы, так как уничтожено большинство сельскохозяйственных отраслей, единственно, что осталось - это зерноводство. Деревня - это корни России. Если мы уничтожим деревню, мы погубим Россию.
Армия деморализована и не боеспособна, нет современного оружия. Реформа в армии не принесла положительного результата. Тысячи офицеров безжалостно изгоняются из армии и флота. Численность Вооруженных Сил сокращена до угрожающих размеров. Уничтожаются целые научные военные школы. Ликвидирована военная наука. Катастрофа уже произошла - Россию защищать некому, нет у неё больше лучших друзей - Армии и Флота.
С 7 мая 2008 года у нас появилась новая форма государственного правления - ТАНДЕМ. Он, заботясь о безопасности родины её народа, принимает программы, пишет указы, постановления чтоб лучше жилось народу российскому. Вся эта забота об отечестве заканчивается на уровне говорильни. ТАНДЕМ принимает со своим стратегическим партнером Китаем программу Сотрудничества между регионами Дальнего Востока Восточной Сибири российской Федерации и Северо - Востока Китайской Народной Республики (2009 - 2018 годы). По программе Россия предоставит сырьевую базу Дальнего Востока и Восточной Сибири китайцам. Соглашение о сотрудничестве до 2018 г. предполагает совместную разработку российских месторождений, но перерабатывающие и производящие предприятия будут строиться на китайской территории.
Китайцы нам построят пункты пропуска на границе, мосты, дороги к месторождениям и займутся их разработкой, кирпичные заводы, жилье. Это всё делается для того чтоб вывозить наше сырье в Китай и там перерабатывать. С военной точки зрения это всё надо для оккупации территории, чтоб быстрее прошли войска и боевая техника в глубь России.
Китаю отданы месторождения золота серебра, стратегического сырья вольфрама, молибдена, меди, ванадия. Это всё вернется в Россию в виде танков, самолетов, ракет вместе с НОАК. Жилье, построенное китайцами, пригодится для их же граждан. Потому что Китай приходит сюда основательно и навсегда.
Китай начинает, вмешивается в управления наших территорий, финансирует выборы, избирательные компании, мэров городов, ведет подкуп чиновников и представителей власти. Появляется политическая и экономическая элита, скупленная Китаем и обслуживающая его интересы. Граждане России решившие заняться сельским хозяйством, производством, бизнесом, не могут получить землю, разрешения лицензии, кредиты, всё блокируется прокитайскими продажными чиновниками, верно стоящими на службе ТАНДЕМА.
В Китае идет уплотнение населением территорий прилегающих к границам России, только в двух провинциях прилегающих к границе на Дальнем Востоке проживает 141 миллион человек, а на Дальнем Востоке и Восточной Сибири всего 6 миллионов человек. Россияне с Дальнего Востока и Восточной Сибири бегут в европейскую часть страны, потому что не видят перспективы для себя и боятся за свою безопасность. Причина - в китаизации этих территорий под лозунгом стратегического партнерства. В скором времени этнических китайцев на Дальнем Востоке и Восточной Сибири будет больше чем россиян, они могут диктовать свои условия и порядки. В чем причина такой бескорыстной любви и щедрости ЕР и Тандема к Китаю, может быть получение каких-то преференций? Китай заинтересован в стабильности и устойчивости правящего режима, так как в случаи смены власти будут пересмотрены кабально - колониальные условия выгодные для Китая и противоречащие интересам России. Его задача как можно дольше сохранить режим ТАНДЕМА и подготовится для оккупации Дальнего Востока и Восточной Сибири.

After the formation of long-awaited treaty of friendship and good neighborliness with China by the Kremlin, President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and President of PRC (People's Republic of China) Hú Jǐntāo had signed supplement to the agreement concerning the Russian-Chinese border in 14 October 2004. According to this supplement, the area of 337 square kilometers was transferred to the PRC: Bolshoy Island (head of the Argun River in Chita region), Tarabarov Island and part of Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island.
The transmission of Islands to the China threatens to the strategic security of Khabarovsk, the Far East and Russia. Chinese army will come in Khabarovsk in two - three hours at the beginning of hostilities, because part of the Bolshoy Ussuriysky Island belongs to China and the other part with the exit to the center of Khabarovsk belongs to Russian Federation. There was fortified locality in the island before and it covered the city in the event of hostilities. There is no fortified locality now. It was eliminated. The city is without protection. After capturing of the city railroad bridge over Amur river will be taken. Railway and road will be blocked. The Far East will be cut off from Russian Federation. Further fate of Far East will be decided by China in a few weeks. Russian Federation won't be able to help to the Far East because Russia has no force and no capabilities. The army is ruined and demoralized. The weapons have mostly fallen into disrepair, there are no new weapons or it enters the army in limited quantity. After modernization the army has only 85 untrained crews who have never taken part in actual hostilities. The wholesale redundancy of the army and the officers left without power protection from the external enemy the Far East and Eastern Siberia.
Transferring of troops from the central part of Russia isn't possible, because we don't have adequate equipments and facilities. Chinese saboteurs will cut the railway, blow up vulnerable points (bridges and tunnels) and hydroelectric power station or coordinated hydroelectric systems for the greater destabilization of the situation.
Acts of sabotage will be hold in the power lines, gas pipelines and oil pipelines of Ural and Central Russia for a greater destabilizing effect. These objects are difficult to protect because of their length and branching. If sabotage and terrorist acts take place in winter, the cities will remain without electricity and heat. Panic and chaos will catch cities, people will fight for warmth and food. Shops and food facilities and warehouses will be robbed. Authorities won't be able to take appropriate steps to remedy the situation, as far as it has nothing except prate and verbiage. Empty promises won't change the situation. The collapse will come in Russia.
There are a lot of saboteurs inside the Chinese Diaspora with its extensive secret-service and intelligence officials, which has already apparently got fighting subversive and terrorist groups with the full weapons structure and funds for conducting of special operations in the territory of Russia.
China prepares for war and increases budget from year to year. In 2010 the budget is equal to 78 billion dollars, and the hidden part of it may be 30-40 percent of this amount.
Chinese arsenal of weapons consists of different weapons from a strategic missile to the modern small arms weapons. Chinese missiles can reach Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod. Ural, East Siberia, Kamchatka and the Far East are completely in Chinese missiles' sights. Chinese aviation is free to surf our air spaces in the east, because there is no air defense.
The Navy of China has better quality of weapons and bigger than Russia's one. Chinese submarines can move freely in the boundary waters of Russia.
People's Liberation Army (PLA) has 2.25 million soldiers and in case of military action could provide 208.1 million well armed and trained soldiers. China regularly conducts military exercises of PLA to train offensive operations with shifting of troops to a distance about 2000 kilometers. It's enough to reach Lake Baikal.
China conducts active preparation for military action not only along the common borders with Russia. PRC flies to arms against Russia in the Arctic. There was launched a construction program of icebreaker ships, the fleet of icebreakers is replenished by the first icebreaker "Snow Dragon". The aim of the Middle Kingdom is occupation of Russia to the north and the control of the Arctic route.
If somebody takes control of the Arctic route he will control a new way the world economy, Chinese people say.
The purpose of icebreakers' use is leading of landing ships through the ice of the Sea of Okhotsk to such cities as Magadan, Palana, Okhotsk, Nikolaevsk-on-Amur, and to the island of Sakhalin, Kamchatka Peninsula (to the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy and Ust-Kamchatsk, Korf). Then through Bering Sea to Anadyr city, Bering Strait and to the exit to the Arctic Ocean along the northern coast of Russia with entering in ria of the rivers Lena, Yenisei, Ob. From there can be captured strategically important sites and cities: from Lena River – cities Vilyuysk, Yakutsk. From Laptev Sea Buor-Khaya Bight - the port of Tiksi can be captured. From Yenisei River - cities Dudinka, Norilsk, Igarka and Tura can be captured. From Ob River - cities Salekhard and Labytnangi. Enemies can get to cities Vorkuta, Ugra, Tobolsk, and further to city Tyumen by railroad. This landing operation will defeat disastrous losses to Russia, she will lose all major oil-gas fields.
Beginning of large-scale offensive operations along the land border and landing in northern Russia by PLA will complete a full and quick victory of China and seizure of territory up to Ural from Russian Federation. The fact that Russia doesn't have a permanent terrestrial connection with those territories and cities will sustain to leading of amphibious warfare, the only connection is the river - the river or the sea - the river. There is no need in large numbers of troops. One well trained and prepared company or battalion is enough, because inhabitants and military units located in that territory will make no military resistance. When all the territory up to Ural would be captured, all Russians will be deported out from Ural or destroyed. Success is never blamed.
The Russian leadership realizes that country's security can't be defended with a help of non-trained crews. They accept the armed doctrine in the name of containment of Russian Federation's integrity and security in a future conflict with China or any other aggressor.
According to the new doctrine Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons in case of threats to the nation. We do it not because we want it, we have nothing to fight and don't have well trained soldiers who are ready to defend the motherland. Our officer cadre is dispersed and demoralized.
Army reform concerning transferring of army into volunteer professional army is failed.
The country's leadership wanted to get the loyalty from the army, not professionalism.
The Chinese adopt the mobilization law. This law is aimed at improving the country's defense mobilization system, it defines its main principles and mechanism of realization. According to new law, the government in such circumstances has the right to increase control of financial management, transportation, trade, communications, media activity, including the Internet, the use of potable water and food sources.
The Chinese begin to create strategic reserves of gas. They expect to build 10 giant gas storage facilities as well as create a strategic oil reserves in case of an emergency or war.
China is active in building of a huge underground bunkers for evacuation during an earthquake, write Xīnhuá news agency. One of them will be opened soon in the center of Nanjing metropolis. "Underground city" with area of 16 hectares will accommodate up to 6.6 thousand people. It will have temporary inhabitation, hospitals, grocery stores and King's pipe. People will be able to live independently in a bunker during the month. Beijing has already got 15 earthquake shelters, which can accommodate up to 200 thousand people. This is not only earthquake shelter; it's a real bomb shelter in case of nuclear war with Russia. It's a response to a new doctrine of Russia on the first use of nuclear weapons in case of aggression.
China began to shift the military enterprises from big cities in the province of the country, to spread them around the area. It's done to make difficult military enterprise destroying by enemies in time of war.
Adopted Chinese defense buildup plan consists of three stages.
The first stage is that military forces achieved the ability to protect the vital interests of China. It includes the successful conduct of local wars of low and medium intensity around the perimeter of the border and "effective pacification and deterrent of potential aggressor".
In the second stage military forces should become a force, "which guarantees the expansion of strategic borders and living space".
In the third stage military forces should be able "to win the war of any scale and duration, using all means and methods of warfare" should be created.
After completing the third phase the PLA will have no rival, China will expand its strategic borders of living space far beyond the borders of China.
There is practically nothing to defend the territory of Eastern Siberia and Far East of Russian Federation. What is country's leadership doing to strengthen the integrity and security of the homeland?
Higher education has been transferred into a commercial basis. Scientific laboratories and designers bureaus were liquidated. Funding for research and development was virtually eliminated, that's why scientists had to go abroad from impecuniosity and poverty.
Hundreds of industrial factories were shut down and destroyed, unique technologies were irretrievably lost, working people were just thrown into the street.
Thousands of villages vanished from the Russian territory. Millions of Russian peasants died from deep drinking, they drank because of idleness, poverty and hopelessness.
There is no work in the village because most of the agricultural industries are destroyed, the only thing that remains is grain growing. Village is an origin of Russia. If we destroy the village, we will destroy Russian federation.
The army is demoralized and combat-ineffective, there are no modern weapons. Army reform was unsuccessful. Thousands of officers are driving out the army and navy ruthlessly. The number of Military Forces is reduced to alarming size. Academic military schools are destroying. Military science was liquidated. The catastrophe has already happened. There's no one to defend Russia, it has no longer Army and Navy - its best friends.
Since 7 May 2008 we have a new form of government - a TANDEM. It takes care of the country's security, takes the program and writes decrees, resolutions for better living of the Russian people. But all it's care is only at the level of talking. Tandem embraces with China as it's strategic partner the program of cooperation between the regions of the Far East, Eastern Siberia, Russian Federation and the North-East of China (2009 - 2018 years). According to the program raw material base of Far East and Eastern Siberia will be provided to the Chinese. Agreement on cooperation up to 2018 involves the codesign of Russian deposits, but the processing and manufacturing enterprises will be based on Chinese territory.
The Chinese will build the checkpoints on the border, bridges, roads to the deposits for us and will mine it, will build brick factories and housing. Everything is doing for exporting and recycling of our raw materials in China. From a military perspective all it's necessary for the occupation of territory, for quicker passing of troops and military equipment into Russia. Deposits of gold and silver, strategic raw material of tungsten, molybdenum, copper and vanadium were given to China. It will be returned to Russia in the form of tanks, planes, missiles together with the PLA. Dwelling house built by the Chinese, will be useful for their own citizens. The reason is that China comes here thoroughly and forever.
China begins to interfere in the management of our territories, fund our elections, election campaign and our mayors. It bribes our officials and government representatives. Political and economic elite bought up by China and serving its interests is appearing. The citizens of Russia who want to engage in agriculture, manufacturing, business, can't receive land, permits, licenses, loans, everything is blocked by pro-Chinese corrupt officials, who serve TANDEM.
The territories near Russian’s borders have a big Chinese population. There are 141 million people living in only two provinces near border with Russia. And there are 6 million Chinese people living in the Far East and Eastern Siberia. Russians run in the European part of the country from the Far East and Eastern Siberia, because they don't see prospects for themselves and afraid for their safety. The reason is Sinicization of these territories under the slogan of strategic partnership. Soon the ethnic Chinese in the Far East and Eastern Siberia will be more than the Russians and they will dictate their conditions and order. What is the reason of such selfless love and generosity of the United Russia and the Tandem to China? Maybe they want to get some preferences? China is interested in stability and sustainability of the regime because in case of change of power will be reviewed enslaving-colonial conditions, which are favorable for China and against the interests of Russia. China's aim is to preserve the regime tandem as long as possible and to prepare for the occupation of the Far East and Eastern Siberia.

Source text - English Instead, Tabitha continued to reserve the sharpest edge of her animosity for her eldest brother Lawrence. The origins of the ill-feeling which subsisted between these unhappy siblings are not easy to trace. Most probably they had to do with temperamental differences. Mildred, of course, was with him: she was at this stage several months pregnant with their first and only child (a son, as it was to turn out), and it was presumably the prospect of seeing these, her favourite members of the family, which induced Tabitha to forsake the comfort of her own substantial residence and cross the threshold of her hated brother's home. Although Matthew Winshaw and his wife were still alive and in good health, they were by now effectively consigned to a set of chambers in a self-contained wing, and Lawrence had established himself as master of the house. It would be stretching a point, all the same, to say that he and his wife Beatrice made good hosts. Lawrence, as usual, was preoccupied with his business activities, which required him to spend long hours on the telephone in the privacy of his office, and even, on one occasion, to make an overnight trip to London (for which he departed without making any kind of apology or explanation to his guests). Meanwhile Beatrice made no pretence of welcoming her husband's relatives, and would leave them unattended for the better part of each day while she retired to her bedroom on the pretext of a recurrent migraine. Thus Godfrey, Mildred and Tabitha, perhaps as they themselves would have wished, were thrown back on their own devices, and passed several pleasant days in each other's company, wandering through the gardens and amusing themselves in the vast drawing, sitting, dining and reception rooms of Winshaw Towers.

And here is Henry, Thomas's younger brother, already recognized as one of the most ambitious Labour MPs of his generation. Most of the people in this country recognize the unilateralists for what they are: a bunch of cranks.' He pauses to allow one of the under-footmen to refill their glasses of cham¬pagne. 'Do you know the best bit of news I've heard all month?' 'Bertrand Russell getting seven days in the slammer?' 'That did bring a smile to my face, I must say. But 1 was thinking more about Khrushchev. I suppose you've heard that he's started testing H-bombs again, out in the Arctic or somewhere?'
'Really?'
'Ask Thomas what that did to shares in the munitions compa¬nies a couple of days later. Through the roof, they went. Through the bloody roof. We made a few hundred grand overnight. I'm telling you, earlier this year, with Gagarin coming over and every¬one talking about a bit of a thaw, things were beginning to look a bit shaky. I didn't like the look of it at all. Thank God it turned out to be a flash in the pan. First the Wall goes up, and now the Russkies start letting off fireworks again. Looks like we're back in business.' He drains his glass and pats his cousin affectionately. 'Of course, I can talk to you like this, because you're family.'

Yuri was my one and only hero at this time. My parents would save every photograph from the magazines and newspapers, and I fixed them to the wall of my bedroom with drawing-pins. That wall has been re-papered now, but for many years after the pictures came down you could still see the pin marks, dotted into a random and fantastic pattern like so many stars. I knew that he had visited London recently: I had watched the scenes on television as he drove through streets lined with welcoming crowds. I had heard of his appearance at the Earl's Court exhibition, and the knowledge that he had shaken hands with hundreds of lucky children turned me hot with envy. Yet it had never occurred to me to ask my parents to take me there. A trip to London for my family would have been as bold and far-fetched a proposition as a trip to the moon itself.

The nearest and biggest was the Odeon, which was showing a film called The Naked Edge with Gary Cooper and Deborah Kerr. My parents took one look at this and hurried on, although I lingered yearningly, catching the exotic scent of forbidden pleas¬ures in the title, and intrigued by a card which the cinema manager had placed in a prominent position beneath the poster:
NO ONE, BUT NO ONE, WILL BE ADMITTED TO THE THEATRE DURING THE LAST THIRTEEN MINUTES OF THIS FILM. FLASH¬ING RED LIGHT WILL WARN YOU.
Grandpa took me roughly by the hand and dragged me away.
'What about this one?' said my father.
We stood in front of a smaller and less imposing building which announced itself as 'Weston's Only Independent Cinema'. My mother and Grandma bent down to peer closely at the lobby cards. Grandma's lips formed into a doubtful pucker and a gentle frown creased my mother's brow. 'Do you think it looks suitable?' 'Sid James and Kenneth Connor. Should be funny.' Grandpa said this but his real attention, I noticed, was on a picture of a beautiful blonde actress called Shirley Eaton, who was the third star of the film.
'Certificate U,' my father pointed out. Then I shouted, 'Mum! Mum!'
Her eyes followed my pointing finger. I had found a notice which announced that the supporting film told the story of the Russian space programme, and was called With Gagarin to the Stars.

They went downstairs again and were introduced to the other members of Kenneth's family: his cousins Guy, Janet and Malcolm, his Uncle Edward, and his mad Aunt Emily, for whom time seemed to have stood still ever since the First World War. Just before the solicitor began reading the will, another woman appeared: a young, blonde and beautiful woman played by the actress Shirley Eaton. She was there because she had nursed Kenneth's uncle during his final illness. There weren't enough chairs for everybody to sit around the table, so Kenneth had to balance on Shirley's knee. He seemed quite pleased about this.
The will was read and it transpired that none of the relatives had been left anything at all: they had been made the victims of a practical joke. They argued with each other bitterly as they began getting ready for bed. Then, suddenly, all the lights in the house went off. By now there was a terrible storm raging outside and Fisk suggested that the generator must have broken down. Ken¬neth and Sidney volunteered to go with him and investigate. When they reached the shed which housed the generator they found that the machinery had been smashed to pieces. They started going back towards the house, but were amazed to find Uncle Edward sitting on a deck-chair in the middle of the lawn, drenched by the pouring rain.

It was touch and go for a while. I wouldn't have been at all surprised if she had simply got up and left the room. She looked at her sheet of A4 paper and seemed to be wondering whether to drop the subject altogether, to jack in the clearly thankless task of trying to get me to listen to a few simple words of English. But then, after taking a deep breath, she started speaking again: slow, loud, deliberate. It was obvious that this was my last chance.
And I would have listened at this point, I really would, for my curiosity was aroused, apart from anything else, but my brain was spinning, all my senses were in a whirl, because she had used my name, she had actually called me by my first name, Michael, she had said, 'I hope you don't mind me asking this, Michael,' and I can't tell you how long it was since anybody had called me by my name, it can't have happened since my mother came down - two, maybe three years - and the funny thing about it was that if she knew my name, then in all probability I knew hers, or I had known it once, or I was expected to know it, we must have been introduced at one time or another, and I was so busy trying to put a name to her face, and to put her face into a context where I may have seen it before, that I completely forgot to pay any attention to her slow, loud, deliberate speech, so that as soon as she finished I knew we were in for something more, something much more and something much much worse than just another long and difficult pause. 'You haven't been listening to a word of this, have you?' I shook my head.
'I get the sense,' she said, rising quickly to her feet, 'that I'm wasting my time here.'
She stared at me accusingly; and not having much to lose any more, I stared back. 'Can I ask you something?' She shrugged. 'Why not?' 'Who are you?'
Her eyes widened, and it felt as though she had taken a step away from me, although as far as I could see she didn't actually move. 'I'm sorry?'
'I don't know who you are.' She gave a mirthless, incredulous smile. 'I'm Fiona.'

'Do you know the secret of success in the television business?' he asked her, late one afternoon. 'It's very simple. You have to watch it, that's all. You have to watch it all the time.'
Hilary nodded. She never watched television. She knew she was too good for it.
'Now I'll tell you what we're going to do,' said Alan.
What they were going to do, it transpired - much to Hilary's horror - was to sit down in front of the television and take in an entire evening's viewing, with Alan talking her through every programme, explaining how it was made, how much it cost, why it had been scheduled at a certain time, and where its target audience lay.
'Scheduling is everything,' he said. 'A programme stands or falls by its scheduling. Understand that, and you'll already have a march on all the other bright young graduates you'll be competing with.'
They started off with the news on BBCi at ten to six, followed by a magazine programme called Town and Around. Then they switched channels to 1TV and watched The Saint, with Roger Moore.
'This is the kind of show the independent companies do best,' said Alan. 'Very sellable abroad: even to America. High produc¬tion values, lots of location work. Snappy direction, too. It's all a bit shallow, for my liking, but I wouldn't knock it.'
Hilary yawned. At seven twenty-five they watched something about a Scottish doctor and his housemaid, which all seemed very slow and provincial to her. Alan explained that this was one of the most popular programmes on television. Hilary had never heard of it.
'They'll be discussing this storyline in every pub, office and factory in Britain tomorrow,' he said. 'That's the great thing about television: it's one of the fibres that holds the country together. It collapses class distinctions and helps create a sense of national identity.'
He was equally lyrical about the next two programmes: a documentary called The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, and another news bulletin at nine o'clock, this one lasting a quarter of an hour.
'The BBC is respected the world over for the quality and fair-mindedness of its news coverage. Thanks to the World Service, you can tune in a radio almost anywhere on the globe and be sure to hear impartial, authoritative bulletins, mixed in with lighter programmes which maintain the highest standards in music and entertainment. It's one of our greatest post-war achievements.'
Until now Hilary had merely been bored, but at this point things started to go rapidly downhill. She was made to sit through a dreadful comedy show called Nearest and Dearest, full of coarse jokes which had the studio audience screeching with vulgar laughter, and then they saw a thing called It's a Knockout, which featured a series of witless outdoor games. She began to squirm with rage and embarrassment. Unconsciously, she chan¬nelled her agitation through her fingertips by reaching across to a fruit bowl next to the sofa and plucking off grape after grape: she would peel each one with her tapered fingernail before popping it into her mouth. A little pile of the skins started to form on her lap.
'This isn't my sort of show at all,' said Alan. 'But I don't look down on it. You have to make things which appeal to everyone. Everyone's entitled to their bit of fun.'
They finished off by turning over to BBCz and watching a series called Ooh La La!, adapted from the farces of Georges Feydeau. This one starred Donald Sinden and Barbara Windsor. Hilary fell asleep halfway through, and woke up just in time to catch the end of an astronomy programme presented by a peculiar man in an ill-fitting suit.
