Source text - English "Plastic degradation is a ticking bomb," says Yvonne Shashoua, a conservation researcher at the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. She is part of a network of European researchers racing to save our plastic heritage before it crumbles into dust.
Our love affair with plastics stems in large part from their flexibility. They can be moulded into just about any shape imaginable, and are available in consistencies ranging from rock-hard to soft and squidgy. When it comes to longevity, though, they have a serious weak spot. In molecular terms, plastics are polymers: clusters of long, chain-like carbon-based molecules that can be shaped when warm but set firm once cooled. Over time, the chemical bonds that hold these chains together break as they are attacked by oxygen in the air or ultraviolet photons in sunlight, or are simply broken apart by ambient heat.
We are already seeing the consequences of these processes in materials and objects from the 19th and 20th centuries. Cinema film made from celluloid, for example, caused the movie industry to explode in more ways than one. Celluloid is in some respects an ideal medium for film, as it is both transparent and flexible, but it is also a close cousin of cellulose trinitrate, an explosive also known as guncotton. Many early celluloid movies simply went up in smoke as the archived reels ignited spontaneously in hot weather.
The decay of other plastics is less spectacular, but no less inevitable. Take cellulose acetate, an early, non-flammable alternative to celluloid. Like many plastics, it decays autocatalytically: when it starts to break down, it releases chemicals that attack its own polymer chains. In this case the culprit is acetic acid, the sour liquid that is the essential ingredient of vinegar.
So is the situation hopeless? Not quite. The evil day of decay can be delayed significantly by adding anti-ageing compounds that either block the initial degradation – by acting as a sunscreen, for instance – or that mop up the destructive breakdown products. These additives are costly, so manufacturers don't want to add more than they have to. But however much is added, the additives eventually lose their effectiveness. "At that point the polymer is unprotected," says Shashoua. "That's when you suddenly see degradation."
Developing conservation strategies is not made easier by the variety of ways in which different plastics degrade. What works to preserve one material can catastrophically shorten the lifetime of another. Most modern plastics decay primarily through reaction with oxygen, so are best preserved by sealing them in an oxygen-free atmosphere. Yet cellulose acetate needs exactly the opposite treatment: without good ventilation, the acetic acid vapour released as the plastic ages builds up, accelerating autocatalytic decay.

Source text - English ARE we programmed for depression? People with overactive immune systems appear to be primed for the condition. The finding could allow doctors to distinguish between different types of depression, offer help earlier and prescribe more personalised treatments.
“That would be a real game changer for us,” says Andrew Miller, a psychiatrist at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. “Right now we’re so non-specific in choosing a treatment, it’s pot luck,” he says. “I will ask patients which drugs they’ve heard of, or what their friends are taking, when prescribing.”
“If you could predict the course of depression, you could tailor treatment,” says Carmine Pariante at King’s College London. When a person suffers a period of sadness, it is near impossible to predict whether it is likely to simply pass with time or spiral into severe depression, leading to shattered lives and perhaps even suicide. “The problem is that you only realise when it’s too late.”
Now Pariente’s team have found that some people may be more biologically sensitive to triggers for depression, and that this heightened sensitivity could be spotted using a blood test.
They discovered this by studying people who were taking a drug called interferon alpha. Used to treat hepatitis, it is thought to work by ramping up immune system activity.
One side effect of the drug is that between 30 and 40 per cent of those who take it go on to develop depression. The drug can have an effect similar to experiencing a stressful life event, says Pariante – some who take it will develop depression, while others will be resilient.
Pariante’s team monitored 58 people who took the drug for six months for hepatitis C. The researchers took blood samples before and after this period, and assessed the participants’ mental health using questionnaires.
By the end of the period, 20 of them had experienced a major depressive episode, with symptoms such as persistent fatigue, sadness, hopelessness, and loss of appetite.
When Pariente’s team looked at the blood samples, they found that these individuals had altered patterns of gene expression before they even started taking the drug. These people seemed naturally to make more proteins that are involved in inflammation, oxidative stress and the death of neurons, and fewer proteins involved in brain cell growth (Neuropsychopharmacology, doi.org/bfqn). “Overall, this has a toxic effect on brain function,” says Pariante.
Immune link
Inflammation is usually a result of the healing response, caused by the immune system targeting and protecting damaged tissue. But there is mounting evidence that elevated levels of inflammation are linked to a number of disorders (see “An aspirin a day?“), including depression.
Previous work has shown that around half of people with depression have heightened levels of immune cells and compounds that cause inflammation in their blood – and that it is this group of people who see little or no benefit from standard depression treatments, such as drugs that affect serotonin or other brain signalling chemicals. The discovery that changes in gene expression are detectable before the onset of depression could help predict how badly someone is likely to respond to particularly stressful life events, such as a bereavement. This information could warn doctors to monitor at-risk patients, and help them decide when medication might be helpful.
“I agree that identifying gene expression signatures could be used as risk biomarkers for the prediction of depression,” says Michael Berk at Deakin University in Geelong, Australia. “If we can identify at-risk individuals and the pathways involved, we know in whom we can or should intervene.”
The finding could also improve treatments. Blood tests could be used to see if a person with symptoms of depression has an overactive immune system. Those who show signs of significant inflammation could then take drugs that target the immune system instead of medicines like Prozac, which act on serotonin.
Once upon a time, being biologically sensitive to stress would have been a useful adaptation, says Pariante. He thinks that in our evolutionary past, the biggest sources of stress would have been things that put us at risk of injury or infection, such as an attack from a predator. It would make sense to ramp up the immune system to respond to such events.
But now, when much of our stress stems from relationships or work, this response is causing unnecessary and potentially harmful inflammation. “Today, the price we pay for the response is too high,” Pariante says.
An aspirin a day?
Inflammation’s telltale fingerprints are increasingly showing up in a range of conditions. People who develop schizophrenia havemore active immune cells in their brain even before their symptoms appear, for example. And although heart attacks are caused by arteries getting physically blocked, there is now evidence that the inflammation of blood vessel walls is also an important factor.
At least three types of tumours often form at sites of inflammation. Some studies suggest that low doses of aspirin might reduce the incidence and spread of several cancers, including breast and prostate cancer.
Inflammation may also be part of the root cause of Alzheimer’s disease. A powerful anti-inflammatory drug usually used for arthritis has shown promise in tackling the condition in a trial. Clare Wilson

Mathijs Slangen: “There are two important questions to answer about how to value my equipment availability.
1. Do I see this as a means to deliver certain services to my customer, so part of my standard operating procedures and unique selling point?” Simply stating: “I win from my competitors because I have better processes in place.
2. Do I see this as a vital element to continuously create value for my customer? In other words, am I making sure that my customers get the best quality out there even if that means I lose my competitive edge of equipment availability?”
If your answer is mostly steered towards the first answer, the decision about pooling is more an operational excellence theme rather than a strategic one. The probability of making a pooling concept a success is much lower than if you lean more towards answer number two.
Operational excellence in many cases means finding improvements in your current processes, whereas setting up a pool concept requires a completely different mindset, and more drastic changes to the organisation.”

Source text - English Bryan Lovell likes to show his fellow geologists an image of a network of river valleys. "I ask them where they think this might be on Earth," he says. It is, as you probably guessed, a trick question. The river valleys are in the North Sea, north of Scotland, beneath a kilometre of water and a further 2 kilometres of sediment.
The sea floor here has been slowly sinking ever since it formed. Yet 55 million years ago, something very strange happened. In a geological blink of an eye the sea floor was thrust upwards nearly a kilometre, until it was high and dry above the waves. It remained above the sea for about a million years, long enough for rainwater to carve deep valleys. Then it sank down again. It all happened astonishingly fast.
The big question is why. None of the usual explanations apply. The collision of tectonic plates can lift vast regions many kilometres up into the air, but there are no colliding plates under the North Sea. Sea level can fall when huge ice sheets form, but not by a kilometre and not in only one area. Volcanic hotspots, where hot molten rock rises up from deep within the Earth, can also produce uplift, but the nearest hotspot is hundreds of kilometres to the west, where it has lifted up Iceland. What's more, hotspots produce slow uplift over tens of millions of years, not a relatively sudden rise and fall.
Now, at long last, there may be an answer. A team from the University of Cambridge reckons that the likely culprits are pulses of particularly hot rock or, to give them their highly technical name, "hot blobs". The idea that hot blobs exist in the mantle, the region between Earth's crust and its core, is not new. It has long been known that some parts of the Earth's mantle are hotter than others. In fact, one of the few things known for sure about the mantle is that its temperature, viscosity and density vary widely. This keeps the mantle constantly churning, as hotter and less dense rock rises towards the crust while cooler and denser slabs sink towards the core. This mantle convection is what powers the movement in plate tectonics, and brings heat to volcanoes and to hotspots such as the plumes beneath Hawaii and Iceland.
It is also well known that within hotspots, blobs of particularly hot rock occasionally rise up. Models of the Earth's mantle have suggested that they exist, and there is also solid evidence in the form of changes in the types of volcanic rocks found on the ocean floor. Until recently, however, nobody imagined that these hot pulses could change the Earth's surface dramatically and quickly, or that this could happen away from major hotspots.

Source text - English It wobbles like a jelly, but could make robots more flexible than ever before. Soft artificial muscles have been used to make a motor with only a few parts, and no gears, bearings or cogs. The motor signals a new dawn for artificial muscles, says Iain Anderson, head of the Auckland Bioengineering Institute's Biomimetics Lab in New Zealand, where it was created.
The muscles themselves are electroactive structures consisting of two layers of conducting carbon grease separated by an extremely stretchy insulating polymer film, says Anderson. "It can stretch by more than 300 per cent."
When a voltage is applied, the configuration behaves like a capacitor, with positive and negative charges accumulating on either side of the insulator. As the opposite charges attract one another the insulator is squashed between them and flattens and stretches. Turn the voltage off and it contracts again to its original size.
The motor looks rather like a bicycle wheel, with the elastic muscles stretched between the edge of the wheel and the centre, like flat spokes. To turn a shaft, six of the muscles work in concert, contracting one after the other. Although the device looks as if it is wobbling like jelly, the spokes are connected to a foam ring wrapped tightly around the central shaft, and this arrangement exerts a continuous rotational force.
This is not the first time electroactive polymers (EAPs) have been used to create rotary motion, says Anderson. But previous efforts used a sort of ratcheting mechanism instead of the foam ring. Anderson's design removes the need for bearings, gears or anything else that is rigid.
"There's huge potential for this kind of actuator," says Chris Melhuish, director of the Bristol Robotics Lab in the UK. Robots made of artificial muscle would feel soft and flesh-like and would be able to mimic the dexterity and mobility of living creatures, without the need for rigid mechanical components.
These kinds of EAPs are extremely strong, says Yosef Bar-Cohen, who specialises in electroactive materials at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California – many times stronger than their biological counterparts. The simplified motor that Anderson has built opens up a whole new range of uses for artificial muscles, he says. For example, they could be used to make instruments for keyhole surgery that are soft enough to be squeezed through tiny incisions but still able to perform the jobs of more rigid mechanical devices.
A company called Artificial Muscle in Sunnyvale, California, is developing EAP-based motors designed to behave like haptic displays, which respond when they are touched. They provide tactile feedback for cellphones, computer mice and touchscreens, producing a range of different feelings beneath a user's fingertips. They can produce the satisfying "click" sensation of a real button when typing on a touchscreen, for example.

I have been following a 1-year course on specialized translation ENG>IT, ICoN Consortium in collaboration with Pisa and Genoa universities.

I am an Italian native speaker with an excellent knowledge of English, written and spoken, to level C1 of the CEFR and have lived and worked in the US (two years) and in England (one year).
