Source text - French The Language Barrier
The Islamic sources suggest that very few Muslims were concerned to learn the languages of the Crusaders. In fact, although there is some awareness of their ethnic diversity onthe part of the Muslim chroniclers-English (Inkitar), French (Faransis), German (Alman), Ventians (Banadiqa) and others are mentioned- there seems to be no perception that there was more than one 'Frankish language'.Usama writes dismissively: ' These people speak nothing but Frankish; we do not understand what they say.' On another occasion he declares: Afrankish women hung on to me, prattling in their language, and I did not understand what she was saying.'
The Muslim chroniclers, however, make some effort to produce the names of the Crusader leaders: St Louis, for example, is known as 'Raidafrans', which Al-Maqrizi explains as ' a term in the language of the Franks signifying ' King of the Franks.'
Whist it is understandable that the Muslims would not wish to speak the language of the 'accursed Franks', it is less impressive that there does not seem to be much mention of the Arab knights learning Turkish, the language of their military overlords, nor that the Turks learned much Arabic. Usama is unabashed in admitting that he cannot understand either Frankish or Turkish. In view of all this, it is perhaps not surprising that there is a certain lack of veracity in the conversations recorded in the Islamic sources. Dialogues in high-sounding Arabic which could never have actually taken place are put into the mouths of Turkish commanders and sultans.

تذكر المصادر الإسلامية أن عددا قليلا جدا من المسلمين كانوا يهتمون بتعلم لغات الصليبيين. وفي واقع الأمر فرغم وعي المؤرخين المسلمين بالتنوع الإثني للصليبيين –الإنجليز (إنكتار)، والفرنسيون (فرنسيس)، والألمان ( ألمان)، وسكان البندقية (بنادقة) كما ذكرت إثنيات أخرى- لا يبدو أن هناك إدراك بأنه يوجد أكثر من ' لغة فرنجية' واحدة. ويروي أسامة بن منقذ في هذا الصدد باستخفاف: " هؤلاء الناس لا يتكلمون سوى اللغة الإفرنجية؛ ونحن لا نفهم ما يقولون." وفي مناسبة أخرى يقول: " أمسكت بي امرأة من الفرنجة، وهي تثرثر بلغتها، فلم أفهم شيئا مما كانت تقول لي."
ومع ذلك فإن المؤرخين المسلمين يبذلون بعض الجهد في كتابة أسماء قادة الصليبيين: سانت لويس، مثلا يعرف باسم 'رايدا فرانس' وهو ما يشرحه المقريزي على أنه ' كلمة في لغة الإفرنج تعني 'ملك الإفرنج'.
فإذا كان من المعقول ألا يرغب المسلمون في الحديث بلغة 'الإفرنج الملعونين'، فإن ما يبدو أقل إثارة للإعجاب ألا نجد ذكرا لفرسان عرب وهم يتعلمون اللغة التركية، لغة قادتهم العسكريين، أو عدم ذكر أتراك يتعلمون اللغة العربية كثيرا. ولا يخجل أسامة بن منقذ من الاعتراف بأنه لا يعرف لا اللغة الإفرنجية ولا التركية. وبالنظر لكل هذا، لا يبدو مفاجئا أن نجد قدرا من انعدام المصداقية في الحوارات المسجلة في المصادر الإسلامية. فالحوارات بلغة عربية فصحى لا يعقل أنها وجدت أصلا توضع على ألسنة قادة وسلاطين أتراك.
