Source text - English Shown in the photo is the Cave Under Satan’s Bridge, which is next to Tatev Church. The story behind this place’s name is an interesting. I will briefly recount it here. Long ago at this place there lived a boy and a girl who fell in love. They met at the bridge every day and spent whole days together. One day, following an earthquake, the bridge collapsed, thus tearing the thread that connected the two lovers. Every day the girl would look out her window at the ruins of the bridge, but one day, she looked out to see that the bridge had been restored. The lovers resumed their meetings, marrying after some time. It was only many years later that the girl discovered that her husband had sold his soul to the devil so that the bridge might be restored.
About the photo – This is an inspirational place, where the water and the earth meet, where you feel completely free and find yourself trying to make the impossible possible. It’s fairly difficult to get under the bridge itself – you have to slide a few meters over the cables and then walk through knee-deep waters – but it’s worth it. Maybe even for this reason alone this place deserves to be among the top sights to see in Armenia. When I went down there for the first time, I was overcome by the beauty and magnificence of this place. The water was crystal clear; you could see even the smallest pebbles at the bottom. Following the waters you come to a small cave. Entering the cave is like entering another world. The ceiling is hung with stalactites. The water dripped from them into the dark waters, creating a resounding echo. Huge white rock protruded from the water like giant sea turtles. It was simply unbelievable. As you go further and further you begin to see a light. The bright sun blinds you as you come out of the cave. It’s an amazing feeling. In a dream-like state, with wet fingers, I pulled my phone from my pocket to capture this moment. I’ve been back to this spot since, but my first visit still lives a strong impression on me. It’s something I will never forget.
I’m not sure my words do justice to the beauty of this place. It really is something you have to see to understand.
