English to Russian: Stainless Steel Detailed field: Engineering (general)
Source text - English Cleaning of the stainless steel
Detergents
Do not apply any chloric solution, lime remover or other detergent with diluted hydrochloric acid,
hydrofluoric acid, formic acid or silver polish on stainless steel.
Ensure that the detergent is used according to the manufacturer’s regulation as well as the valid
occupational and environmental protection.
Consider by all means that special detergent for stainless steel might damage other materials
such as galvanised steel of aluminium. Make sure, while using it, to avoid any stain of the deter-
gent on other materials like aluminium casing or galvanised subconstructions. Acids might even
damage decorative surfaces made of stone. Do not apply any detergent for stainless steel on
plastic parts (e.g. parts of the facing, cables, hoses, sealing) either.
Otto Christ AG recommends the Christ special stainless steel detergent for the basic and routine
cleaning. During the first cleaning spray the water with detergent mixed in a ratio of 1 to 5 up to 1
to 1 or apply it with a brush. Let the mixture act for 1 to 3 minutes maximum, but do not let it dry.
Rinse with enough clear water (no foam left in the water and visible on the surface). Let the sur-
face dry, to enable the formation of a protective film. Cleaning one section after the other will be
the best. The ratio of the mixture might be reduced to 1 to 10 for the routine cleaning. As to the
rest proceed like for the basic cleaning.

English to Russian: Osmosis General field: Science Detailed field: Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
Source text - English Osmosis means automatic substance migration through membranes
Osmosis takes place when two hydrous solutions are separated from eachother with different ion concentrations
(several different salt particles) through a semi-permeable membrane. The semi-permeable membrane only lets
solvents pass but not the dissolved substances.
The membrane works as a barrier that can not easily be passed through by the larger particles. Instead of that, the
smaller water molecules flow from the less concentrated side to the higher concentrated side. In the process, the water
molecules flow so long until either the particle concentration on both sides is counterbalanced or pressure is built up on
the higher concentrated side – the so-called osmotic pressure.
Reverse osmosis is a physical process for the concentration of dissolved substances into liquids, in which the natural
osmosis process is reversed using pressure.
Pressure (pump pressure) is applied to the side with the high ion concentration (tap water, raw water), which presses the
water into the pure water / supply water side with the lower concentration.
The unwished dissolved (calcium, magnesium etc.) substances can not pass through the membrane due to their
molecular size. For this reason, only pure water is collected in the supply water side.
Translation - Russian
Russian to English: Letter of Credit Detailed field: Finance (general)
Translation - English A documentary letter of credit is an obligation of the bank, given by the bank itself or on the basis of importer’s instructions, to place agreed amount in fixed currency atbeneficiary’s(exporter’s) disposal, under the stipulation of adherence to the terms and conditions of the contract.
The issuing bank has primary importance in documentary credit operations. Establishment of a letter of credit arises from importer’s instructions, who specify its terms. Transfer of letter of credit to beneficiary (exporter) proceeds, generally, through intermediary bank, also called advising bank. The role of the latter is to make a document authentication. Advising bank becomes confirming bank, in case of promising to take additional liabilities of L/C payment.
Thereby, there are 4 participants in the “typical documentary credit operation”: applicant (importer), issuing bank, advising/confirming bank and beneficiary (exporter).
Letter of credit is the most flat and balanced method of payment regarding interests of exporter and importer. There are several types of LC. We will examine the most two practically common methods:
- Irrevocable L/C which might be declined only with the permission of a person, waiting for the goods or services payment.
- Confirmed L/C which is guaranteed by bank, that payment will be accomplished after providing specific documents.
Russian to English: Oslo Detailed field: Journalism
Source text - Russian OSLO — This is a city that imports garbage. Some comes from England, some from Ireland. Some is from neighboring Sweden. It even has designs on the American market.
“I’d like to take some from the United States,” said Pal Mikkelsen, in his office at a huge plant on the edge of town that turns garbage into heat and electricity. “Sea transport is cheap.”
Oslo, a recycling-friendly place where roughly half the city and most of its schools are heated by burning garbage — household trash, industrial waste, even toxic and dangerous waste from hospitals and drug arrests — has a problem: it has literally run out of garbage to burn.
The problem is not unique to Oslo, a city of 1.4 million people. Across Northern Europe, where the practice of burning garbage to generate heat and electricity has exploded in recent decades, demand for trash far outstrips supply. “Northern Europe has a huge generating capacity,” said Mr. Mikkelsen, 50, a mechanical engineer who for the last year has been the managing director of Oslo’s waste-to-energy agency.
Translation - English
