Source text - English There has been much talk in this country about the "Olympic spirit". I am not sure what exactly that means, but the term embodies some combination of courage, generosity and never-say-die determination. It is the force that pushes an individual to the limits of physical endurance in the name not of victory but of human striving.
The problem is the phrase is being bandied about in a society that seems to be doing its best to squash that spirit. Britain, host to the Olympic Games in July and August 2012, has become the land par excellence of "safety management", where risk, initiative, personal responsibility and experience of extremes are being crushed in the name of the need to nanny everybody through the supposed dangers of stepping out the front door.
The nation of "Mind the gap" - the regular admonition on the London tube to watch the space between the train and the platform - has become the country of "Mind the very air you breathe". In South Yorkshire last year, delivery of mail was suspended in one area was suspended after a postman slipped and hurt his shoulder. The Royal Mail apologized but said,"The safety of our staff is paramount".
Safety should not be "paramount" - not at the expense of freedom, adventure and the unknown. Just because more and more tools exist to control people does not mean authorities should use them, and just because accidents happen does not mean life should be lived as if they are always imminent. Children need to experience bugs, treacherous trails and strange sounds in the woods at night, they don't need hermetically sealed security.
