The profound desire to avoid another world war and to preserve Peace and security inspired the founding of the UN in 1945. Articles 1 and 2 of the UN Charter make it clear that maintaining international peace is the paramount objective. Although the young UN quickly expanded to take on responsibilities for alleviating poverty, hunger, social injustice, and environmental destruction, it did so because the UN founders understood that ignoring these issues would undermine international stability and thus increase the likelihood of war. | Translation - Portuguese
O profundo desejo de evitar outra Guerra Mundial e de preservar a paz e a segurança inspiraram a fundação da Organização das Nações Unidas em 1945. Os artigos 1 e 2 da Carta das Nações Unidas deixam claro que a manutenção da paz internacional é o principal objetivo. Embora a recém criada organização tenha rapidamente expandido suas áreas de responsabilidade para diminuição da pobreza, da fome, das injustiças sociais e da degradação ambiental, isso ocorreu porque os fundadores entenderam que, ignorar esses assuntos poderiam minar a estabilidade internacional e, assim, aumentar a probabilidade de guerras. |
