About HIV
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the cells that help your body fight infection, making you vulnerable to other infections and diseases. It’s spread through certain bodily fluid contact with people who have HIV. Most commonly, it’s spread through unprotected sex or sharing drug injection needles.1
Diagnosis and Treatment
HIV is diagnosed with a blood or oral fluid test and can be done by your healthcare provider or clinic. It can take 3 to 12 weeks after being exposed to HIV for the virus to be detected in the test.2
While there is no cure for HIV, improvements in treatment have allowed people to live with HIV as a chronic, manageable condition. HIV is treated by a combination of drugs called antiretroviral therapy (ART), which works to slow the progression of the virus in your body and keep you healthy.
One goal of treatment is to bring your HIV to ‘undetectable’ levels. This means that the amount of HIV in your blood is so small that you will not transmit it through sexual contact. Because there is no known cure for HIV, once you are on ART, you will remain on it for the rest of your life. ART is the standard of care for all people living with HIV, regardless of how long they’ve been diagnosed or their current health. Today, there are numerous ART options that contain multiple drugs in one pill. Your healthcare provider can work with you to determine which ART is right for you.3

About Clinical Research
Clinical research studies explore whether a study medication is safe and effective for patients. Clinical research has led to improvements in HIV treatments, allowing people with HIV to live with undetectable levels. Current ART therapies have known safety and tolerability issues, which may be improved through clinical research.
Some goals of HIV clinical trials are to develop medications that:
• Keep HIV at undetectable levels in the blood
• Are safe and effective to take over a long period of time
• Possess a high barrier to viral resistance
• Are easy for patients to fit into their lives – for example, pills that can be taken once a day, with or without food, etc
Qualified doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals are responsible for conducting each clinical research study. Regulatory bodies in each country provide oversight and approval after a thorough review. A study medication will only be approved for use after it is shown to be safe and effective in clinical research studies.
