English to Spanish: Uphill battle is OK with Dallas mayoral candidate Marcos Ronquillo General field: Other Detailed field: Journalism
Source text - English Marcos Ronquillo knows that his run for mayor perplexes many people in Dallas.
They wonder why a smart guy, an attorney with political savvy and wide-ranging local ties, would take on Mike Rawlings, a popular, well-heeled incumbent expected to cruise to re-election on May 9.
To Ronquillo, win or lose, what matters is giving Dallas voters “a clear choice of competing visions.”
“The important thing is community engagement,” he said. “It’s very important that we have these debates. It’s very important that we talk about the [Trinity] toll road, very important that we talk about schools, about losing jobs from Dallas, losing population.”
The 61-year-old Lake Highlands attorney is trying to build his mayoral campaign on his opposition to a proposed toll road in the Trinity River corridor, a costly and polarizing project that Rawlings supports.
But beyond his concerns about the road itself, Ronquillo sees the Trinity issue as embodying his underlying philosophy: City Hall, he says, should step back from big regional projects to focus more on what’s happening at the neighborhood level.
That contrasts somewhat with Rawlings’ big-vision approach. Ronquillo is more likely to talk about sidewalks than bullet trains.
In speech after speech, Rawlings extols the wisdom of approaching issues from a regional perspective. Ronquillo worries that regionalism will reduce Dallas to “a glorified bus stop on the way to the suburbs.”
Rawlings, in a campaign statement, called Ronquillo “a good person.” But he rejected his challenger’s notion of competing visions.
“We don’t have to choose between thinking big or thinking small,” the mayor said. “We should be doing both.”
Whether or not Rawlings engages with him, Ronquillo says, he intends to keep talking.
But so far, his campaign has been quiet, scarcely visible.
