Bio
Born in Germany to a Scottish father and a German mother, I
was brought up completely bilingually (German and English). Since 2008 I have
been living full-time in France and have a French partner with whom I have a
PACS agreement. We live in the South of France near Perpignan.
My entire life has been multilingual. The bulk of my experience
in translation has been internet-based, covering a wide variety of subjects,
such as: subtitling, tourism, vintage cars, film scripts, church architecture,
building restoration.
Working for several years as a news journalist and photographer on the staff
of two high-profile German newspapers (1986 - 2000) and thereafter as a
freelance, during which time I also trained as a film camera operator, I have
been exposed to a high level of both creative report-writing and the need to
carry out translations as part of the preparation process. I have always made
it my business to keep up to date on a wide range of topical subjects
throughout. A major element of my 'toolkit' has been the ability to produce
clear, crisp, accurate and 'lively' forms of words using the three languages in
which I have fluency - German, English and French. In the past four years I
have also edited and published two books for a German author.Having spent a lot of
time in both Italy and Spain, I have a close familiarity with both languages
but would not put myself forward as having sufficient proficiency in these
languages to work on translation. However, my wide experience of working and
travelling in the Italian and Spanish cultures has added to my facility as a
translator in the languages I know well. One of the key competences which I
know a translation client will always demand is on-time delivery of accurate
work and this is something which any translator/journalist of 35 years' standing must be
able to guarantee. It is something on which I pride myself.
