En boîte, je m’accoudai au comptoir en souriant de toutes mes dents, je fis des efforts pour avoir l’air constamment ravi, et je passai une heure interminable à faire tinter les glaçons dans mon verre en les regardant fondre. De temps en temps, Antoine ou Batti passait me coller une tape dans le dos ou m’ébouriffer les cheveux en me demandant si j’allais bien, ce à quoi je répondais invariablement “Oui, super !” A quelques mètres de moi, je remarquai un type qui me dévisageait avec insistance. Je commençai par me demander si je le connaissais et si je devais allais lui dire bonjour mais je surpris l’expression de son regard et je compris que non. Je ne l’avais jamais vu et il me lançait un regard plein de haine. Il ne me quittait pas des yeux et je sentais que chacun de mes mouvements, que mon visage, que mon existence lui étaient absolument insupportables. Je regardai autour de moi mais Antoine n’était nulle part. Je ne pouvais pas bouger parce que je savais que le type en profiterait pour faire comme si je l’avais bousculé ou trouverait n’importe quel prétexte pour me casser la tête ou me casserait la tête comme ça, sans raison. J’avais l’impression d’être abandonné dans un désert de solitude et d’absurdité. Les gens parlaient autour de moi, et ils dansaient et leur proximité m’isolait encore davantage. Le type posa son verre et se dirigea vers moi. Il portait une veste bleu de Chine. Il pouvait avoir trente ans. Ses yeux étaient humides et glauques et il avançait en titubant un peu. Personne ne voyait ce qui se passait, personne ne faisait attention à moi, comme si j’avais été entouré d’hologrammes indifférents et que j’étais, avec le type qui voulait me frapper, le seul être de chair dans un monde de fantômes. J’étais terrifié et je ne pouvais rien faire. Tout était arbitraire et réel comme dans un cauchemar. Il était tout près de moi quand Antoine lui saisit le bras. Il lui souriait, lui demandait comment ça allait, s’il voulait boire un verre et le type ne savait plus quoi faire sous ce déferlement de sympathie inattendue. Antoine me désigna du doigt et dit que j’étais sous sa responsabilité. Le type me grimaça un sourire dégueulasse tandis qu’Antoine, toujours affable et volubile, le ramenait à sa place et l’éloignait de moi. Il claqua des doigts pour demander qu’on lui serve un verre.
Ça va aller, me dit Antoine en me rejoignant, il va te laisser tranquille. Il vaut mieux régler les choses de cette manière-là, tu sais.
Je lui dis que oui.
Je peux te laisser un moment ? Ça va ? Je suis avec elle, là-bas, je ne suis pas loin, me dit-il en me montrant une fille du doigt.
Je lui dis que oui. Dès qu’il se fut éloigné, je sentis le regard du type peser à nouveau sur moi. Et tandis que la peur revenait m’envahir, je maudis mon frère d’avoir cru pouvoir l’amadouer aussi facilement, de ne pas avoir compris que ce demeuré était dirigé vers moi par quelque chose d’aussi irrationnel et souverain qu’un instinct animal et qu’il ne me laisserait pas tranquille, et c’était si injuste et stupide que la peur fit soudain place à un sentiment de révolte et de haine. Près de moi, sur le comptoir, il y avait un grand cendrier en verre, avec des arêtes pointues, et je me mis à désirer ce que j’avais craint, je voulais qu’il s’approche à nouveau, je voulais feindre la peur, faire semblant de me recroqueviller sur moi-même, attendre qu’il soit tout près de moi, prendre le cendrier et le lui écraser sur la tempe, mon cœur battait à tout rompre, je voulais entendre ses os craquer, je voulais voir couler son sang. Je le regardai fixement et il vint vers moi. Je sentais le goût alcoolisé de ma salive. L’excitation me faisait haleter. Au moment où je tendais la main vers le cendrier, Antoine surgit de nulle part. Il fit trébucher le type et lui écrasa deux fois le visage sur le comptoir jusqu’à ce qu’il s’affaisse, après quoi il lui donna une bonne dizaine de coups de pied dans le ventre et dans les côtes, en prenant son élan à chaque fois et en criant “Je t’avais dit que c’est mon frère, espèce d’enculé !” Après une longue conversation avec les videurs au cours de laquelle Antoine plaida la légitime défense, on nous autorisa à prendre congé dignement. Le type, lui, fut évacué je ne sais où avec beaucoup moins d’égards. Sur le parking, Antoine essaya de me réconforter.
Je n’avais pas besoin que tu viennes, lui dis-je, j’avais le cendrier !
Il me regarda en souriant.
Oh oui ! C’est sûr, dit-il, le cendrier. Si tu y arrives, tu le tues et si tu le rates, c’est lui qui te tue ! C’est une bonne idée, le cendrier !
Les larmes me montaient aux yeux. Il dut s’en rendre compte parce qu’il cessa de sourire.
Ecoute, Paul, je suis sûr que tu aurais pu t’en sortir tout seul, mais je ne peux pas prendre ce genre de risques, tu comprends ? Je ne veux pas qu’on te fasse du mal.
Je lui dis que je voulais rentrer tout de suite et que, si ça ne le dérangeait pas, je préférais dormir au village plutôt que chez lui.
Je te ramène, dit-il.
La fille avec qui il avait passé la soirée monta en voiture avec nous.
Sur la route du village, à chaque virage, les phares faisaient surgir brièvement de l’obscurité des masses compactes de maquis vert sombre. Antoine voulait que j’emprunte les mêmes chemins que lui mais il ne voulait pas que je les emprunte à sa manière. Il ne voulait pas que je sois différent de lui et il ne me laissait même pas essayer d’être comme lui. Je voyais sa main posée sur la cuisse nue de la fille se rappelle-t-il cette main posée, maintenant qu’il croit se confier à moi ? Se rappelle-t-il cette fille ? Je lui demande : “Tu te rappelles ta main posée sur cette fille ?” mais il fait comme s’il n’avait rien entendu et continue à parler. Il continue à mentir. Il continue à faire vivre dans le passé un homme qu’il n’a jamais été et ont l’existence fictive n’a pas d’autre but que de le rendre digne de la compassion universelle. Et il y met tant d’acharnement et de sincérité que je ne sais plus si je dois admirer son culot ou ses capacités d’aveuglement. Je saisis vaguement mon rôle dans toute cette mise en scène ridicule, je sais qu’il a besoin de moi comme garant de l’objectivité de ce qu’il raconte, comme preuve qu’il ne s’agit pas de pensées illusoires et délirantes mais d’un récit authentique dont, par ma seule écoute, je pourrais attester la légitimité. Pour cela, il n’a besoin que de ma présence, pas de mon avis ou de mon adhésion, ni même de mon attention (alors pourquoi me forcer à éteindre la télé ?). Je ne suis là, comme d’habitude, qu’en vertu du sens que j’acquiers dans son monde personnel. Cette nuit-là, en rentrant au village à cinq heures du matin, j’avais trouvé mon oncle Paul assis tout seul dans le salon en train de caresser du doigt la surface muette d’une photo. Il m’avait demandé comment s’était passée ma soirée et je m’étais mis à pleurer. Il s’était tu comme s’il savait que la vie était difficile et laide, jusque dans la futilité et l’insignifiance de certaines blessures qu’elle nous inflige. S’il m’avait demandé quoi que ce soit, je pense que je lui aurais dit combien je me sentais faible et humilié mais aujourd’hui je crois que mon humiliation venait surtout du fait que je m’étais senti utilisé et commis par mon frère pour tenir un rôle dans une histoire que n’était pas la mienne et qui niait mon existence singulière. A cette époque, cela faisait longtemps qu’Antoine avait cessé de me martyriser dès que je me retrouvais seul avec lui mais le sens de sa bienveillance était le même que celui de sa cruauté. C’était maintenant en me protégeant qu’il faisait valoir sa force et la mettait en scène pour en éprouver la réalité. Et je suis sûr aujourd’hui qu’il avait su depuis le début que ce connard ne me laisserait pas tranquille, que toute l’affabilité grotesque dont il avait fait preuve envers lui n’était destinée qu’à endormir sa méfiance et à attiser son agressivité pour se ménager une intervention héroïque et brutale au moment inévitable où le type essayerait de s’en prendre à moi. Je ne dis pas que mon frère me voulait du mal. Simplement, il avait été incapable d’envisager l’existence d’un point de vue qui ne soit pas le sien, comme il en est encore incapable aujourd’hui. Et si le monde exige de lui, comme il semble que ce soit maintenant le cas, qu’il considère la possibilité de tels points de vue extérieurs, le monde devient subitement incompréhensible pour lui. Le point de vue d’Antoine est l’exacte opposé de point de vue de Dieu.
In the nightclub, I stood leaning against the bar, grinning widely, making an effort to seem constantly thrilled, and I spent an unending hour clinking the ice cubes in my glass and watching them melt. Every so often, Antoine or Batti came by and slapped my back or ruffled my hair, asking me if I was alright, to which I repeatedly replied “Yeah, awesome!” A few metres away, I noticed a guy staring at me insistently. At first I wondered if I knew him and should go and say hello, but when I saw the look in his eye I realized that wasn’t the case. I had never seen him before and he was filled with hatred looking at me. He wouldn’t take his eyes off me and I sensed that every movement I made, my face, my existence, was absolutely unbearable to him. I looked around but Antoine was nowhere to be seen. I couldn’t move because I knew the guy would jump at the opportunity to pretend that I had bumped into him or he would find another excuse to beat me up or just beat me up for no reason. I felt abandoned in a desert of loneliness and absurdity. The people around me were talking and they were dancing and their proximity made me feel even more alone. The guy put down his glass and started making his way towards me. He was wearing a blue Chinese jacket. He looked about thirty. His eyes were watery and murky and he swayed a little as he approached me. Nobody saw what was happening; nobody took any notice of me, as though I was surrounded by indifferent holograms and this guy who wanted to beat me up and I were the only beings made of flesh in a world of ghosts. I was terrified and there was nothing I could do. Everything was random and real like in a nightmare. He was right next to me when Antoine grabbed his arm. Smiling, Antoine asked him how he was and if he'd like to have a drink, and the guy was completely lost faced with this outpouring of unexpected friendliness. Antoine pointed at me and said that I was his little brother, that it was my first night out and I was under his responsibility. The guy forced a disgusting smile in my direction whilst Antoine, still affable and prolix, led him back to his place, away from me. He snapped his fingers to order him a drink.
“It'll be alright,” said Antoine, coming up to me, “he's going to leave you alone. It's better to sort things out that way, you know.”
I said yes.
“Can I leave you for a second? Is it okay? I'm just over there, with her,“ he said, pointing out a girl.
I said yes. As soon as he had moved away, I felt the guy's stare heavy on me again. And as fear overtook me a second time, I cursed my brother for having thought he could coax him so easily, for not having understood that this idiot had been drawn towards me by something as irrational and sovereign as animal instinct and that he would not leave me alone, and it was so stupid and unfair that my fear suddenly opened up to make place for a feeling of revolt and hatred. Near me, on the counter, was a large glass ashtray with sharp edges, and I began to wish for that which I had feared; I wanted him to come towards me again, I wanted to feign fear, pretend to curl up in a ball, wait for him to get right next to me, then take the ashtray and smash it against his temple. My heart was pounding as though it would burst, I wanted to hear his bones crack, I wanted to see his blood flow. I looked at him steadily and he came towards me. I could taste the alcohol in my saliva. I was panting with anticipation. Just as I was reaching out to grab the ashtray, Antoine appeared out of nowhere. He tripped the guy and smashed his face twice on the bar until he collapsed, then kicked him a dozen or so times in the stomach and ribs, gaining momentum each time and shouting “I told you he's my brother, motherfucker!”. After a long conversation with the bouncers during which Antoine claimed he was acting in self-defense, we were allowed to leave quietly. As for the guy, he was kicked out with much less ceremony. In the car park, Antoine tried to cheer me up.
“I didn't need you,” I told him, “ I had the ashtray!”
He looked at me, smiling.
“Oh, yeah! Sure, the ashtray,” he said, “If you’d pulled it off, you’d have killed him, and if you’d missed, he’d have killed you! The ashtray’s a great idea!”
My eyes were filling with tears. He must have noticed because he stopped smiling.
“Listen, Paul, I'm sure you could have managed him on your own, but I can't take that kind of risk, you know? I don't want you to get hurt.”
I told him I wanted to go home straightaway and that, if he didn't mind, I'd rather sleep at our parents’ house than at his place.
“I'll take you,” he said.
The girl with whom he had spent the evening got into the car with us.
On the way to the village, at each turn in the road, dense, dark green undergrowth loomed out momentarily under the headlights' glare. Antoine wanted me to take the same roads as him but he didn’t want me to take them in the same way he did. He didn’t want me to be different from him and he wouldn’t even let me try to be like him. I could see his hand resting on the girl's naked thigh – does he remember that hand resting there, now that he believes he has placed his trust in me? Does he remember that girl? I ask him “Do you remember your hand on that girl ?“ but he pretends that he hasn’t heard and carries on talking. He carries on lying. He keeps alive a man he never was and whose fictitious existence serves only to make him worthy of universal compassion. And puts so much forced sincerity and committed into it that I don’t know anymore if I should admire his nerve or his capacity for self-deception. I vaguely grasp my role in this ridiculous mise en scène. I know that he needs me to guarantee the objectivity of his story, as proof that his thoughts are not just delirious illusions, but rather form an authentic narrative to which I could attest, just by listening to it. To this end he needs only my presence, not my opinion or my support, not even my attention (so why force me to turn the TV off?). As usual, I exist for him only by virtue of the sense I acquire in his personal world. That night, returning to the village at 5 in the morning, I found my uncle sitting alone in the living room stroking the mute surface of a photo with his finger. He asked me how my night had been and I started crying. He said nothing, as though he knew that life was difficult and ugly, down to the futility and insignificance of certain injuries it inflicts on us. Had he asked me anything at all, I think I would have told him how weak and humiliated I felt, but now I believe that my humiliation derived mostly from the fact that I felt used by my brother and forced into playing a role in a story which was not my own and which denied my unique existence. By that time, Antoine had long stopped tormenting me when I found myself alone with him, but his kindness and his cruelty were essentially the same thing. By protecting me now, he was drawing attention to his strength, parading it around to feel the reality of it. And I am sure today that he knew from the beginning that that bastard would not leave me alone, and that the grotesque friendliness he had shown towards him was only meant to lull his mistrust and stoke his aggression in order to provide himself with the opportunity for a brutal and heroic intervention at the inevitable moment when the guy would try to go for me. I’m not saying that my brother wanted to cause me harm. Just that he was incapable of imagining existence from another point of view than his own, and he is still incapable of that today. And if the world impels him – as it now appears to be the case – to consider the possibility of such external points of view, the world suddenly becomes beyond understanding to him. Antoine's point of view is the exact opposite of God's point of view.

Source text - French Nous avons choisi de bivouaquer à proximité d’une
grotte.
La senteur éventée des regs se propage dans la fraîcheur du soir. Un chacal jappe quelque part. C’est la nuit qui revient délester le jour de ses mirages et rendre à l’obscurité la pudeur de ses nullités. Bruno et moi n’avons pas échangé un mot depuis plus d’une heure, chacun étant occupé à mettre de l’ordre dans ses pensées. Nous avons allumé un feu à l’abri de la grotte, mangé de la viande séchée, vidé quelques boîtes de conserve et bu un café amer qui m’a meurtri le palais puis, démontés par les sentiers escarpés, nous nous
apprêtons à dormir.
Bruno jette une poignée de sable sur le feu pour
l’éteindre et va, en se contorsionnant, uriner contre une dune. Soulagé, il étale une couverture sur le sol, s’époussette le postérieur et s’étend sur sa couche. Je l’entends s’agiter en quête d’une position confortable. Après moult acrobaties, il pousse enfin un râle d’aise, se recroqueville en chien de fusil et ne bouge plus. Je sais qu’il ne fermera l’oeil que lorsqu’il aura revisité ses excursions de naguère et passé en revue, un à un, les visages qui avaient compté pour lui. Avant, chaque soir, il me narrait un épisode de son feuilleton africain, ses rencontres et ses déchirures,
ses amours évincées, ses petites morts et ses rédemptions...J’ose espérer qu’il ne dérogera pas à la règle, pour cette nuit. J’ai besoin qu’il me parle, qu’il me « soûle » avec ses tribulations, qu’il me raconte les femmes qu’il n’a pas su garder, les chances qu’il n’a pas su saisir. Sa voix inspirée me permettra peut-être de semer le cas de conscience qui occupe jusqu’aux retranchements les plus reculés de mon esprit. Bruno est extraordinairement doué pour rendre sa dignité à n’importe quelle débâcle et trouver un sens aux choses incongrues.
— Vous n’avez pas prononcé un seul prénom de
femme depuis qu’on se connaît, me dit-il tout de go.
Une brise se met à flûter dans les échancrures de la grotte tandis que les ténèbres lâchent leurs sortilèges sur les bêtes nocturnes que l’on devine dans le noir, loin de leurs terriers, ratisser un terrain de chasse rongé jusqu’à l’os. N’empêche, je suis content de l’entendre. J’aurais espéré qu’il me parle de lui, de l’Afrique ; son romantisme
et son angélisme me serviraient de thérapie, mais il a choisi de s’intéresser à moi et, ne m’y attendant pas, je reste sans voix.
— Je ne me rappelle pas vous avoir entendu parler de femmes, monsieur Krausmann. Y a-t-il quelqu’un dans votre vie ?
— Je suis veuf, lui fais-je dans l’espoir de passer à
autre chose.
— Désolé, dit-il au bout d’une courte gêne.
Il marque une pause et revient à la charge :
— Maladie ?
— Accident.
— De circulation ?
— Non.
— De travail ?
— Dans un sens.
Il se hisse sur un coude et me considère, la joue dans la paume de sa main.
— La curiosité est une tare africaine, avoue-t-il. Chez nous, on ignore où elle s’arrête et où commence l’incorrection. Mais vous n’êtes pas obligé de me répondre.
— En vérité, je n’ai pas grand-chose d’intéressant à
dire sur le sujet, le rassuré-je.
— Très bien, je n’insiste pas.
— C’est plus compliqué que ça.
— Je présume...
Il se recouche, croise les doigts sur son ventre et
contemple la myriade d’étoiles dans le ciel :
— I l m’arrive souvent de penser à Aminata, lâche-t-il. Je me demande ce qu’elle est devenue, si elle est heureuse avec son cousin, si elle a des enfants, si elle se souvient encore de notre couple... elle paraissait heureuse avec moi. Je la faisais mourir de rire. Je crois qu’elle m’aimait. Peut-être pas comme un amant, du moins comme un ami... Je l’avais aperçue parmi les filles de la
tribu. Elle était très belle, Aminata. Un peu grassouillette, mais elle avait un charme fou. Et des yeux qui brillaient de mille feux. Et elle sentait bon comme pré au printemps...J’ai demandé sa main sans la consulter, et le doyen me l’a accordée. C’est une pratique courante, chez
les Azawed... Elle aurait pu refuser. Personne ne l’aurait forcée. Le doyen lui avait fait part de mes intentions, et elle n’y avait pas vu d’inconvénients... Je ne comprends pas pourquoi elle est partie. J’essaye de lui trouver une excuse ; je ne vois pas laquelle. Je ne me souviens pas de
l’avoir privée de quoi que ce soit, et au lit, je n’étais pas un foudre de guerre cependant je m’acquittais honnêtement de mes devoirs conjugaux... Son cousin ne venait pas souvent chez nous, en tous les cas jamais seul ou en dehors d’une fête religieuse ou familiale. Pas une fois je n’ai surpris un regard suspect entre Aminata et lui. Ils donnaient l’impression de s’ignorer. Puis, pfuit ! envolés, les tourtereaux. Sans préavis aucun, sans un mot d’explication.
J’étais sur le fion.
— Vous lui en voulez ?
— Je m’en suis beaucoup voulu, mais pas à elle...
C’est des choses qui nous dépassent. Ça vous tombe sur la tête comme une tuile, et c’est tout... Est-ce que je la regrette ? Je n’en suis pas sûr. C’était une fille bien, le coeur sur la main. Je n’ai pas le sentiment qu’elle m’ait trahi. Elle a seulement fait un choix. A-t-elle mesuré le
tort qu’elle me faisait ? Pas une seconde. Aminata ne savait pas penser à mal. C’était une belle nature, naïve à prendre un oiseau pour un songe.
— Vous l’aimez toujours.
— Mmmm... je ne pense pas.
— Mais si, vous l’aimez encore.
— N on, non, je vous assure. C’est de l’histoire
ancienne... Aminata, pour moi, demeure un vague regret. Un malentendu véniel... Et puis, c’est la vie ; elle ne nous prend que ce qu’elle nous a donné. Ni plus ni moins.
Dans le ciel, les étoiles rivalisent en éclat.
Bruno attend à son tour que je lui parle, que je lui
dise quelque chose. Je pense qu’il a besoin de m’entendre, lui aussi. Au moment où il me tourne le dos pour dormir, persuadé que je n’allais rien lui confier de mes secrets, ma voix devance mes pensées et je m’entends lâcher :
— Elle s’est suicidée.
— Pardon ?
— Ma femme... Elle s’est tuée.
— Ah ! mon Dieu.
Il n’a pas ajouté un mot.
J’ai fixé les étoiles jusqu’à ce qu’elles se confondent.
Raide. Transi. Insensible aux morsures des cailloux sur lesquels je suis couché. Lorsque, des heures plus tard, Bruno se met à ronfler, je me rabats sur le flanc et, les yeux hagards, j’attends patiemment que les aurores restituent au jour ce que la nuit lui a confisqué.
Translation - English We decided to set up camp for the night near a cave.
The stale odour of the reg seeps into the coolness of the evening. A jackal yelps somewhere. The night has come to unbosom the day of its mirages and cover its modest worthlessness in darkness. Bruno and I haven't spoken to each other for over an hour, both of us preoccupied trying to put our thoughts straight. We lit a fire under the shelter of the cave, ate dried meat, finished off a few tins of preserves and drank bitter coffee which stung my palate. Then, worn out from walking steep paths, we get ready to sleep.
Bruno throws a handful of sand onto the fire to put it out and walks off, wriggling, to urinate against a dune. Once relieved, he spreads a blanket on the ground, brushes the dust of his behind and lies down on his bed. I hear him tossing to find a comfortable position. After much turning, he at last lets out a groan of relief, curls up in a ball and is still. I know that he won't close his eyes until he's revisited his bygone trips and re-run in his mind all the faces which were important to him. Before, he used to tell me a new episode of his African saga every evening, recounting his encounters and ruptures, his rejected affections, his humiliations and triumphs... I allow myself the hope that he won't break the rule tonight. I need him to talk to me, to “bore” me with his trials and tribulations, to tell me about the women he couldn't keep hold of, the opportunities he couldn't grasp. His inspired voice will give me the means, perhaps, to shake off the crisis of conscience which has consumed me, down to the deepest recesses of my mind. Bruno is incredibly adept at finding an explanation behind any disaster and restoring meaning to irrational things.
“You haven't mentioned a single woman's name since we met,” he says to me straight out.
A breeze starts whistling in the nooks of the cave whilst the shadows cast their spells on the nocturnal animals, which can be made out in the dark, far from their lairs, scraping around a hunting ground already picked to the bone. In any case, I'm happy to hear him speak. I'd hoped he'd talk about himself, about Africa; his romanticism and otherworldliness could be therapeutic for me. But he has decided to ask about me and I, taken aback, am lost for words.
“I don't remember hearing you talk about any women, Mr. Krausmann. Do you have somebody in your life?”
“I'm a widower” I say to him, hoping to move on to something else.
“Sorry,” he says after a short, embarrassed pause.
He hesitates, then continues:
“Illness?”
“Accident.”
“Car accident?”
“No.”
“Work?”
“In a way.”
He shifts onto his elbow and looks at me, his cheek resting on the palm of his hand.
“Curiosity is an African flaw,” he admits. “Here, we don't know where indiscretion begins and ends. But you don't have to answer me.”
“To tell you the truth, I don't have much of any interest to say on the subject,” I reassure him.
“Fine, I won't ask any more.”
“It's more complicated than that.”
“ I guess so...”
He lies down again, folds his hands together on his abdomen and stares at the myriad of stars in the sky.
“I often find myself thinking about Aminata,” he says. “I wonder what's become of her, if she's happy with her cousin, if she has children, if she still remembers us... she seemed happy with me. I used to make her cry laughing. I think she loved me. Perhaps not as a lover, but at least as a friend... I noticed her among the girls of the tribe. She was very beautiful. A little pudgy, but she had an incredible charm. And eyes that sparkled with a thousand fires. And she smelt good, like spring meadows... I asked for her hand without consulting her, and the chief consented. That's common practice with the Azawed tribe... She could have refused. No one would have forced her. The chief informed her of my intentions, and she didn't have any complaints... I don't understand why she left. I've tried to find an excuse for her, but none makes any sense. I don't remember denying her anything at all, and in bed I was no powerhouse but I fulfilled my conjugal duties properly... Her cousin didn't come that often to our house, and never alone or on days that weren't religious or family celebrations. I never noticed any suspicious looks between Aminata and him. It seemed like they ignored each other. Then, just like that, the turtle doves flew away! Without any warning, without an explanation. I was bowled over.
“Do you blame her?”
“I blamed myself a lot, but not her... these things are beyond our power. It falls on you like a ton of bricks, and that's it... Do I miss her? I'm not sure. She was an honest girl, really and truly. I don't feel liked she betrayed me. She simply made a choice. Did she realise how much hurt she caused me? Not for a moment. Aminata didn't know how to think negatively. She had a beautiful nature and was naïve enough to mistake a bird for a dream.
“You still love her.”
“Mmmm... I don't think so.”
“Yes, it's obvious you still do.”
“No, no, I'm telling you. It's ancient history... For me, Aminata is a distant regret. A minor misunderstanding... And anyway, that's life; it takes away what it gives. Nothing more or less.”
In the sky, the stars compete in brightness.
Bruno waits in his turn for me to speak, to say something to him. I think that he too needs to listen to me. Just as he turns his back to go to sleep, persuaded that I won't divulge any of my secrets, my voice overtakes my thoughts and I hear myself saying:
“She committed suicide.”
“Sorry?”
“My wife... she killed herself.”
“Oh! My God.”
He didn't say another word.
I stared fixedly at the stars until they blurred into one another.
Stiff. Frozen. Numbed against the sharp edges of the pebbles on which I'm lying. When, hours later, Bruno starts snoring, I roll onto my side and, wild-eyed, I wait patiently for the dawn to restore to the day what the night took away.
