Professor in Arabic/English Translation at L'Ecole Superieure Roi Fahd de Traduction, Tangier, where I was teaching since September 1989 until I left in March 2010. The King Fahd School of Translation is a postgraduate school for the teaching of Translation, and is attached to Abdelmalek Essaadi University, Tetouan. I taught Translation Workshops, two courses in Translation Theory. I am conversant with computer assisted software and was responsible for introducing SDL Trados to KFST. I also supervised final year students with their translation projects, many of which dealt with Islamic texts.
While in Tangier, I was involved in translating the following texts:
An Anthology of Moroccan Short Stories, translated with Gavin Watterson, Publications of the King Fahd School of Translation, 1995.
Love in the Kingdom of Oil, a translation from the Arabic of a novel by Nawal Saadawi entitled Al-hubb fi zaman al-naft (with Basil Hatim), Saqi Books, London 2001.
The Economy of Abu Dhabi, a translation from the Arabic (with Basil Hatim) of an edited economics reader, Saqi Books, London 2001.
Britain and Morocco during the Embassy of John Drummond Hay, 1845-1886, a translation from the Arabic of a book by Khalid bin Al-Srhir entitled A1-Maghrib wa Britaniya fii l-qarn al-tasi' 'ashar (with Gavin Watterson), Frank Cass Publishers, 2005.
Since 2004 I have been translating legal texts from Arabic into English and French into English on a commercial basis for a legal firm in Texas, USA. In February March 2006 I was also responsible for supervising the translation of a number of documents for the same legal firm from English into Arabic.
Between 2006 and 2010 I translated a number of reports for the Moroccan Advisory Council on Human Rights.
I was also involved in translating documents from French into English for Morocco’s bid to host the 2012 bid for the World Fair.
I have one unfinished project, to complete the translation of Abdul Karim Ghallab’s book Al-M’allim ‘Ali into English.
Since my return to the UK, I have been self-employed and I have been involved in various aspects of the Al Massira project, which is a series of thirteen films giving a chronological presentation of the Bible narrative in Arabic. In particular, I was responsible for producing the English subtitles, which represented about ten hours of filming. I was also responsible for revising the Arabic versions of the written materials, which were originally written in English, and for revising the English text to be used for dubbing. In addition, I have ongoing responsibility for coordinating the translation of the various materials into other languages, which involves continuing involvement with subtitling and dubbing, as well as written translation.
