INFORMED CONSENT
You are invited to participate in a research study to evaluate the effectiveness of a 7-session psychoeducation group designed for recent Oromo refugees. The purpose of the group is to further educate war trauma survivors about the impact of war on their health and to acquaint them with the healing process and options for healing in the local community. Throughout the group process and once you have completed the psychoeducation session, group leaders will assist participants with accessing culturally appropriate psychotherapy services if needed. The principal investigators of the study are Professors, Patricia Shannon and Elizabeth Wieling in the Departments of Social Work and Family Social Science at the University of Minnesota. The study is being conducted in collaboration with Hennepin County and Evelyn Lennon, Social Worker, from the Center for Victims of Torture who will be the primary facilitator of the psychoeducation groups.
You have been invited to participate in this study because you are an adult refugee who has recently come to the United States and who was either self- or professionally referred to participate in the groups through your physician. at Roselawn Health East. This study is related to the larger study being conducted to understand the best ways to assess and address the mental health needs of Oromo refugees.
Procedures:
If you agree to be in this study, you will meet with the researcher and interpreter to review this consent form and answer any questions that you have. After this consent is signed, you will be randomly assigned (by flipping a coin) to either an immediate group or a waitlist group which will start ten weeks from now. The purpose of this procedure is to help us understand whether or not the education group is immediately helpful with symptoms. People who drop out of the waitlist group prior to the start of the group will be replaced by new participants off of the waiting list. No new participants will be added after the start of the group.
If you are assigned to the immediate group, we will ask you to take approximately one hour prior to the start of the group to complete some information about your levels of distress and/or trauma/stress related symptoms you may be experiencing. Some examples of questions include: How often have you had trouble falling or stay asleep? How often have you had bad dreams or nightmares? How often have you felt scared for no reason? How often have you felt sad? You will be invited to participate in all 7 group sessions and at the end you will once again be asked to take another hour to answer the same set of questions. This will help you and us to determine whether the group experience has been helpful in reducing (or changing) in any way your levels of distress.
If you are assigned to the waitlist group, you will also set a meeting to complete these forms prior to the first group. You will be given a start date for your group at that time. You will again complete these forms prior to the start of your group ten weeks later. After you complete the 7 group sessions, you will once again be asked to take another hour to answer the same set of questions.
The seven session education and support group will follow curriculum that provides information about 1) Living in a new culture, 2)Taking care of yourself when you experience stress, 3)Understanding the U.S. health care system, 4) Long-term effects of war stress (two sessions), 5)Loss and grief and the healing process and 6) relationships. Group members will agree to keep information discussed confidential.
Potential Risks of Being in the Study:
The questions we will ask you are very personal. As a result you may have painful memories and feel distressed. For example, as you start to talk about these things you may start to feel overwhelmed or sad. It is very unlikely that there would be an emergency, but in the case something would happen, the research team will stop immediately and provide you with a referral for treatment. You are welcome to review the questions if you wish. No one will have access to the answers you provide other than the approved clinic or research staff.
Potential Benefits of Being in the Study:
There are no direct benefits to participation in the groups. However, many of the refugee community members who have gone through this type of psychoeducation group in the past have reported great satisfaction with their experience
Mandated Reporting:
There is a possibility that your answers provide information that would require us to break confidentially. The following information is not limited by confidentiality and may be released as governed by law: 1) information about a child being maltreated or neglected 2) information about an individual’s plan to seriously harm himself or herself 3) information about an individual’s plan to seriously harm another person. If members of the research staff have or are given such information, they may be required to report it to the authorities.
Compensation:
There is no monetary or other type of compensation for participating in the groups or for completing the assessments.
Confidentiality:
The records of this study will be kept private. In any sort of report we might publish, we will not include any information that will make it possible to identify you. Records will be stored in an approved secure location at the University of Minnesota and only researchers will have access to the records. Protecting participants’ confidentially is priority. All identifying information will be kept in a locked file cabinet and never leave the clinic or PI’s office.
Voluntary Nature of the Study:
Your participation is voluntary and you may terminate at any time without penalty. Your decision whether or not to participate will not affect your current or future relations with your medical clinic, with any community agency, or with your doctor.
