Source text - English Dietary Guidelines for Americans
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) first discussed the Nutrition and Your Health: Dietary Guidelines for Americans in 1980 for use in consumer nutrition education efforts with healthy Americans aged two years and older. Since then, new Guidelines have been updated and released every five years and are used by health professionals and as a basis for federal nutrition programs. The foundation of the sixth edition, issued in 2005, is an evidence-based report developed by the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. Placing a stronger emphasis on weight management through calorie control and physical activity, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines identify 41 key recommendations, 18 of which are for special populations. The recommendations are classified into the following topic areas:
• Adequate Nutrients Within Calorie Needs
• Weight Management
• Physical Activity
• Food Groups to Encourage
• Fats
• Carbohydrates
• Sodium and Potassium
• Alcoholic Beverages
• Food Safety
