"Padre Padrone," which was shown at the New York Film Festival, was reviewed on Sept. 25 by Janet Maslin. Following are excerpts from the review. The picture opened yesterday at the Cinema 2 Theater, Third Avenue and 60th Street.
Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, the two brothers who wrote and directed "Padre Padrone," say they first got the idea for their film from a newspaper clipping—about a shepherd who had lived in almost complete isolation in the hills of Sardinia until he turned 20, then went on to become a professor of linguistics and write a book about his experience.
When the brothers learned more about the man's story, they began to perceive him not as an unsocialized innocent à la Truffaut's "The Wild Child" or Herzog's "The Mystery of Kasper Hauser," but rather as a more conventional figure whose character was shaped through his battle with a single huge impediment. The obstacle in "Padre Padrone" is not the shepherd's estrangement, or even his monumental loneliness, but rather his terrifying and tyrannical father.
The film's beginning, and its most stirring segment, presents a 6-year-old boy being taken out of school and sent off to tend a flock on a desolate, ruggedly beautiful mountainside. His father, who beats young Gavino with objects as stridently symbolic as a stick and a dead snake, inducts the boy into his new way of life in the cruellest manner possible.
There are isolated instances of the father's tenderness, when he shares his perceptions of nature with his son and when he realizes, after the boy bursts into tears and then faints from fright and exhaustion, that the torture has gone far enough. But most of the father's behavior borders on sadism, despite the economic necessity in which it is rooted. So the father remains as inconsistent and irrational to the viewer as he might seem to a small child.
Years later, when Gavino begins bridling under his father's authority and angling for a chance to escape, his battle is fought along more familiar lines and his father seems a less formidable adversary. Gavino enlists in the army and travels to the Italian mainland, where he begins to educate himself and delight in the precise meaning of words. The title which means "My Father, My Master," also refers to Gavino's sheer exultation in the nuances of his new vocabulary.
By the time Gavino returns to Sardinia, his father has begun to seem smaller, pettier, a bit more pathetic in his stubbornness. Gavino finally wins his freedom, but at a terrible cost: He is forced to witness the spectacle of his father's defeat and humiliation.
"Padre Padrone" is stirringly affirmative. It's also a bit simple: The patriarchal behavior of Gavino's father is so readily accepted as an unfathomable given constant that the film never offers much insight into the man or the culture that fostered him. Intriguingly aberrant behavior is chalked up to tradition, and thus robbed of some of its ferocity. But the film is vivid and very moving, coarse but seldom blunt, and filled with raw landscapes that underscore the naturalness and inevitability of the father-son rituals it depicts.
The Taviani brothers have made other films, but this is the first of their efforts to receive wide international exposure and acclaim. "Padre Padrone," which was the grand prize winner at Cannes this year, should serve less as a debut than as an introduction.

Paolo e Vittorio Taviani, i due fratelli che hanno scritto e diretto Padre Padrone, dicono di aver preso ispirazione da un ritaglio di giornale -riguardante un pastore che aveva vissuto in quasi completo isolamento nelle montagne della Sardegna sino all’eta’ di 20 anni, e che poi divento’ professore di linguistica e scrisse un libro sulla sua esperienza.
Quando i fratelli conobbero meglio la storia di quell’uomo, iniziarono a percepirlo non come un innocente asociale alla maniera di “Il ragazzo selvaggio” di Truffaut o “Il mistero di Kaspar Hauser” di Herzog, ma come una figura piu’ convenzionale il cui carattere si e’ determinato attraverso la sua battaglia con un unico enorme impedimento.
L’ostacolo in padre padrone non e’ l’alienamento del pastore o la sua solitudine monumentale, bensì il suo terribile e tirannico padre.
L’inizio del film, e il suo passaggio piu’ emozionante, presenta un bambino di sei anni che viene allontanato dalla scuola e mandato a prendersi cura di un gregge su un versante desolato e aspramente bello.
Suo padre, che picchia il giovane Gavino con oggetti stridentemente simbolici come bastoni o serpenti morti, inizia il ragazzo al nuovo stile di vita nella maniera piu’ crudele possibile.
Ci sono casi isolati della tenerezza del padre, quando condivide la sua percezione della natura con suo figlio e quando realizza, dopo che il ragazzo scoppia a piangere e poi sviene per la paura e lo sfinimento, che la tortura e’ andata abbastanza lontano.
Ma il piu’ delle volte il comportamento del padre confina con il sadismo, nonostante la necessita’ economica nel quale e’ radicato.
Percio’ il padre rimane cosi’ imprevedibile e irrazionale per gli spettatori come puo’ sembrare a un bambino piccolo.
Anni dopo, quando Gavino inizia ad imbrigliare sotto l’autorita’ del padre e a tramare per la possibilita’ di scappare, la sua battaglia viene combattuta lungo le vie piu’ familiari e suo padre sembra un avversario molto meno formidabile.
Gavino si arruola nell’esercito e viaggia nell’Italia continentale, dove inizia a educarsi e dilettarsi del significato preciso delle parole.
Il titolo si riferisce inoltre alla completa esultanza di Gavino nelle sfumature del suo nuovo vocabolario.
Nel momento in cui Gavino torna in Sardegna, suo padre inizia a diventare piu’ piccolo, insignificante, un po’ piu’ patetico nella sua ostinazione.
Gavino vince finalmente la sua liberta’, ma ad un terribile costo: e’ costretto as assistere allo spettacolo della sconfitta e dell’umiliazione del padre.
“Padre Padrone” e’ sicuramente commovente.
E’ anche molto semplice:
Il comportamento patriarcale del padre di Gavino viene cosi’ facilmente accettato come una data costante imperscrutabile che il film non offre molta possibilita’ di travare risposte sull’uomo o la cultura che lo ha preso in affidamento.
Il comportamento di intrigante anormalita’ viene raggiunto dalla tradizione, e quindi derubato di un po’ della sua ferocia.
