English to Japanese: "Mr King's Incredible Journey" by David du Plessis General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English [Note: "Mr King's Incredible Journey" is a delightful illustrated storybook for children by David du Plessis. My husband Michael and I were commissioned to translate this book into Japanese. The following is a short excerpt from the source text.]
"Mister King had never been on a boat before.
It felt strange to bobble about on the waves.
He looked at the rails and ladders and ropes, and he wasn’t sure that he liked being on a boat at all.
The crew were soon hard at work again, pulling nets full of fish out of the sea.
There was so much to do that they completely forgot about Mister King.
Days turned into weeks and Mister King was sad and lonely on the boat.
Now that he was no longer getting his daily swim, his flippers felt out of practice.
There was no fresh fish for lunch or dinner and he was growing thinner and thinner."
Translation - Japanese [翻訳者注: 「ミスター・キングの大冒険」は デイヴィッド・デュ・プレシ氏作・画のi楽しい絵本です。 夫のマイケルと共にこのお話を翻訳しました。以下は、作品からの一部抜粋です]
Yoshiko is a Japanese citizen now resident in Chesterfield (UK) and married to Michael, who is a British national. We are specialists in Japanese <> English translation and proofreading. I translate English>Japanese and my husband translates Japanese>English.
I worked for an advertising and publishing company in Japan, and have experience of copy-editing and proof-reading. My principle when translating from English to Japanese is to produce a correct and effective Japanese version. Of course my husband has the same approach to translation from Japanese to English.
My husband lived in Japan for 15 years and is proficient in Japanese. Not only English is his native language, but also he is a qualified teacher of English as a foreign language, so he has an extensive knowledge of English grammar.
