Cvetka Lipuš: Writing in Between
Writing implies to inhabit two different worlds: the imagined one, the world that is emerging in the writing process, and the surrounding one, the actual life with all its stipulations and joys. Eventually the writer learns to straddle between the two r
ather different existences. Some find shelter in the world of words, others fall though the cracks while trespassing. But how about a writer who in addition to the writer’s double- life also lives in two or more languages or has more than one homeland? How does constant shifting between cultural boundaries change a person? How does a writer find or reinvent herself when both worlds, the physical one and the world of language change? I have been mapping out actual and imagined territories and belongings throughout my career as a writer. Growing up as a national minority in southern Austria, I have involuntarily explored uncharted grounds of writing between belongings. In addition, I have of my own accord joined the league of migrant writers when leaving Europe. Due to these multitudes of belongings, I have as many other transnational, bi- or multicultural writers been constantly redefining and wrestling with basic questions to whom, in which language, and maybe even in whose interest I do write. Perhaps the most challenging inquiry being “as who do I write”; since it entails one’s sense of identity, which may be in a perpetual transition because of the diverse and even conflicting belongings.
Losing one’s place, both literally and in term of belonging and feeling rooted, is challenging, maybe even liberating at best, and destructive at its worst. Every experience of migration is different and unique. It matters enormously whether somebody chooses to leave or is forced to.

Cvetka Lipuš: Pisanje na razmeđu
Pisanje znači življenje u dva različita svijeta: imaginarnom, svijetu koji se pojavljuje u procesu pisanja, i svijetu koji nas okružuje, stvarnom životu sa svim njegovim manama i vrlinama. U konačnici pisac nauči kako da balansira između ta dva prilično različita nivoa postojanja. Neki pronađu utočište u svijetu riječi, dok drugi pak ne uspiju prilikom prelaska. Ali šta je sa piscem koji osim vlastitog dvostrukog života živi i u dva ili više jezika, ili ima više od jedne domovine? Kako to stalno prelaženje kulturnih granica utječe na njega? Kako se spisateljica ponovo pronađe ili se ponovo uspostavi nakon što se oba njena svijeta, i fizički i jezički, promijene? Od samog početka svoje spisateljske karijere, uspostavljala sam stvarni i imaginarni teritorij i pripadnost. Odrastajući kao nacionalna manjina u južnoj Austriji, i protiv svoje volje sam istraživala neotkrivena područja pisanja između pripadnosti. Osim toga sam se, vlastitom voljom, pridružila i skupini pisaca migranata koji su napustili Evropu. Zahvaljujući tom mnoštvu pripadnosti, ja sam se, kao i mnogi drugi transnacionalni, bi- ili multikulturalni pisci stalno preispitivala i mučila osnovnim pitanjima – kome, na kojem jeziku, čak i za koga pišem. Možda je najteže pitanje bilo 'ko sam ja koja pišem', budući da nudi otkrivanje vlastitog identiteta koji je u stalnoj mijeni zbog različitih i čak međusobno suprostavljenih pripadnosti.
Nemanje mjesta, kako bukvalno tako i u terminima pripadanja i osjećaja ukorijenjenosti predstavlja veliki izazov i u najboljem slučaju može biti oslobađajuće, a u najgorem značiti uništenje. Svako iskustvo migracije je drugačije i posebno. Veoma mnogo zavisi od toga da li je osoba sama izabrala da ode ili je na to prisiljena
