THE PLAY OF PARADOX
Do I contradict myself?

Life is rarely, if ever, an either/or equation. In principle and in practice, life is full of contradiction –paradox. It is a balancing act between competing tensions that vie for our time, our energy, and our attention, trying desperately to convince us that we must choose one over the other.
We are faced with these dilemmas every day. Should we spend more time with our family or building a career? Should we experiment and take risks or do things the way they have always been done? Do our children need more freedom or more control? Should we move away from home or stay close to our loved ones? Is it better to collaborate or to compete? Manage or mentor? Go it alone or get support? Be generous or draw boundaries? Stay quiet or fight back?
According to ancient traditions, tensions are not only a natural part of life –they are life. The dynamic tension of opposites is exactly what gives birth to and sustains the ever-changing and ever-evolving elements of our universe. The interaction of opposites –symbolized in the swirling back-and-white circle of the T’ai Chi- exemplifies the universal principle that without one part of the pair, the other cannot exist.
Both sides of the picture complete the circle of wholeness. We must have both day and night, masculine and feminine, movement and stillness, right brain and left brain, the details and the big picture, focus and flexibility. Without the dynamic interplay between these powerful pairs, there is only stagnation, decay, and eventually death. Creative tension, or what I call the play of paradox, is absolutely essential for life and growth.
THE GOLDEN THREAD
What is paradox? A paradox involves two elements, truths, principles, or perspectives that seem contradictory but are both true. “It was the best of times and it was the worst of times,” “all good leaders are servants,” and “the more your learn, the more you realize how little you know” are all paradoxes. Much of the mystery and meaning, the comedy and tragedy of life are based on paradox. Its most ardent champions are scientists (who are still trying to solve the paradoxes of physics), comedians (who make a living pointing out life’s everyday inconsistencies), and mystics, who believe we can glimpse the spiritual world while walking in the physical, the greatest paradox of all.
The sages of East and West speak often of what it is like to be caught inside a paradox. They describe it in ways that challenge us to move beyond our narrow thinking. They tell us that life’s competing tensions are not contradictory but complementary, not mutually exclusive but mutually inclusive. Life, they say, is not a matter of this or that, but a matter of this and that.
Paradox is woven like a golden thread through the world’s spiritual traditions. Saint Francis, for instance, pointed to paradox when he said, “It is in giving that we receive, . . . and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.” The Buddha told his students that taking refuge in the sangha (the community) was vital to their spiritual growth, but he also cryptically advised, “Look not for refuge to anyone besides yourselves.” Lao Tze, the Chinese sage and founder of Taoism, taught, “To be empty is to be full. . . . To have little is to possess,” and Jesus warned, “Be ye therefore wise as serpents and harmless as doves.”
Were these great teachers just confused? Did someone make a mistake when they translated their words? Not at all. In the writings and in the lives of the wise ones, paradox permeates. In fact, one of the major lessons they have come to teach us is that we cannot ignore or chase away the tension of opposites,because that is how the universe operates. The Sufi mystic Rumi summed it up when he said that God “teaches by means of opposites so that you will have two wings to fly, not one.”
Paradoxes are here to stay. We cannot run from them; we can only embrace them and become one with them. For, in reality, the apparent opposites are two sides of the same coin that are meant to reside in harmony.
The principle of paradox is nondenominational. No matter what background we come from or tradition we espouse, we will confront it. Our job, say the sages, is to learn to flow with the cadences of life as the universe asks us to bring first one and then the other side of the paradox to the fore in our lives at the right time and the right place. As an enlightened pundit once said, “Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape.”
Creating Breakthroughs, Not Breakdowns
What happens when we don’t embrace both sides of the paradox? Rather than creating breakthroughs, we create breakdowns. If we refuse to honor our physical needs, our body may shut down and send us to a hospital bed so that we are forced to listen. If, on the other hand, we give all of our attention to our material needs and don’t nourish our spirit, our soul begins to ache and we may fall into depression without realizing why. In short, when we are out of balance, we become lopsided. It’s like sitting at one end of a seesaw that suddenly flops down when our playmate runs off and leaves us alone; we hit bottom because there is nothing on the other side to create movement.
I believe that the greatest cause of stress is our inability to recognize and participate in the play of paradox. What often keeps us stuck on one side of the paradox or the other are the myths we have been taught and grown comfortable with. We don’t even know that they are myths because we automatically accept them as true. They are based on assumptions we have made about the way the world works, and, like straitjackets, they prevent us from turning around to see the other side of the equation. They make us believe that we have no other options.
When we get out of balance, life sends its messengers—in the form of circumstances, people, and events—to help us get back into balance. It is human nature, of course, to want to run in the other direction, even to “kill” the messengers, so we don’t have to hear the message. But that never works. The messengers just keep on coming until we stop and listen and accept their invitation to dance.
This book explores one of the many paradoxes of life—the paradox of giving and receiving. We are called to master the delicate dance of giving and receiving in virtually every area of our lives. You’ll meet it when you deal with issues of abundance, self-worth, health, relationships, career, and uncovering what your real gifts are, to name just a few. At its core, the paradox of giving and receiving deals with the overriding issue that challenges so many of us: How do I balance what others need with what I need? In order to give to others, do I really need to give up myself?
At the outset, I should make it clear that honoring yourself is not about pampering yourself. And it’s not about turning your back on those who need you. The issues surrounding giving and receiving are deeper. Much deeper. By honoring yourself, you are respecting, appreciating, and giving birth to your best self so you can give creatively—and abundantly—in ways that honor others.
While modern society is ill-equipped to bring us back into balance, the sages of East and West are experts. Throughout these pages, you will discover their practical, and often surprising, advice for mastering the inner art of giving and receiving. You will learn to recognize the myths that have held you hostage—myths that, like blinders, keep you from living a life filled with possibility and passion. You’ll learn what it means to celebrate your gifts and greatness as you explore the inner dynamics behind giving with the heart rather than the head, setting boundaries, being honest about the unhealthy people in your life, using your feelings to stay true to yourself, finding your own voice, and honoring endings. Most importantly, you’ll learn the steps for staying in balance. For when you learn the steps, you can perform the dance—and that’s when the magic begins.
Getting Back in Rhythm
We’re all in dance class, learning to master one move or another. We’re all students of life, learning new ways to move in harmony with the cadences of life’s ever-changing music. In our own ways, we’re all teachers, too, as we share with others what we are learning. And, yes, it’s paradoxically true that we do often teach what we most need to learn. With all the topics I’ve taken up for the books I’ve worked on, I have found this to be the case, and this one is no different. I am learning every day what it means to honor myself, my best self.
Depending on the day and the dance, I still stumble and get out of sync. I still have to stop, take a few deep breaths, and get back in step with the rhythm of the music. But I’m learning, and that’s what counts to those incredibly patient instructors who coax and sometimes drag me onto the dance floor. I’m certain that I will get better at the dance as I practice, but I also know that I will always be learning. I will always be mastering new steps for honoring and celebrating my gifts.

La vida raras veces consiste en una ecuación y/o. Por principio y en la práctica, la vida está llena de contradicciones: de paradojas. Es un acto de equilibrio entre las tensiones que se disputan nuestro tiempo, nuestra energía y nuestra atención, tratando desesperadamente de convencernos para escoger entre una cosa y otra.
Nos enfrentamos con estos dilemas todos los días. ¿Deberíamos pasar más tiempo con nuestra familia o forjar una carrera? ¿Deberíamos experimentar y asumir riesgos, o hacer las cosas como siempre las hemos hecho? ¿Necesitan nuestros hijos más libertad o más control? ¿Deberíamos alejarnos de casa o permanecer cerca de nuestros seres queridos? ¿Es mejor colaborar o competir? ¿Dirigir o enseñar? ¿Hacerlo solos o buscar ayuda? ¿Ser generosos o establecer límites? ¿Quedarnos quietos o devolver el golpe?
De acuerdo con las tradiciones antiguas, las tensiones no solo constituyen una parte natural de la vida: son la vida. La tensión dinámica de los opuestos es exactamente lo que produce y sostiene los elementos siempre cambiantes y siempre en evolución de nuestro universo. La interacción de los opuestos ¬—simbolizada en el círculo giratorio blanco y negro del Tai Chi— es un ejemplo del principio universal donde se establece que si falta una parte de la dualidad, la otra no puede existir.
Ambos lados de la imagen completan el círculo de la totalidad. Debemos tener el día y la noche, lo masculino y lo femenino, el movimiento y la quietud, los hemisferios derecho e izquierdo del cerebro, los detalles y el panorama general, el punto exacto y la flexibilidad. Sin la interacción dinámica entre estos pares poderosos, solo hay estancamiento, deterioro y, finalmente, la muerte. La tensión creativa, o lo que yo llamo el juego de la paradoja, es absolutamente esencial para la vida y el crecimiento.
EL HILO DORADO
¿Qué es una paradoja? Una paradoja contiene dos elementos, verdades, principios o perspectivas aparentemente contradictorias, pero verdaderas. “Fue el mejor momento, pero también fue el peor”, “Todos los buenos líderes son servidores”, y “Entre más aprendes, más te das cuenta de lo poco que sabes”, son paradojas. Gran parte del misterio y el significado, la comedia y la tragedia de la vida se basa en paradojas. Sus más ardientes defensores son los científicos (quienes aún tratan de resolver las paradojas de la física), los comediantes (quienes se ganan la vida señalando las inconsistencias de la vida diaria), y los místicos (quienes creen que pueden tener un atisbo del mundo espiritual al tiempo que caminan en el mundo físico, la mayor paradoja de todas.)
Los sabios de Oriente y Occidente hablan con frecuencia de lo que significa estar atrapado en una paradoja. Lo describen en formas que nos desafían a ir más allá de nuestro pensamiento limitado. Nos dicen que las tensiones de la vida no son contradictorias, sino complementarias. No se excluyen entre sí, sino que se incluyen mutuamente. La vida, dicen, no es cuestión de esto o aquello, sino de esto y lo otro.
La paradoja se entreteje como un hilo dorado a lo largo de las tradiciones espirituales del mundo. San Francisco, por ejemplo, se refirió a la paradoja cuando dijo: “Es al dar como recibimos, (…) y es muriendo como renacemos a la vida eterna.” El Buda mencionó a sus estudiantes que refugiarse en la sangha (la comunidad) era vital para su crecimiento espiritual, pero también advirtió en forma críptica: “No busquéis refugio en nadie más que en vosotros mismos.” Lao Tsé, el sabio chino y fundador del taoísmo, enseñó: “Estar vacío es estar lleno. (…) Tener poco es poseer.” Y Jesús advirtió: “Sed, pues, astutos como serpientes y mansos como palomas.”
¿Estaban estos sabios simplemente confundidos? ¿Alguien cometió un error cuando tradujo sus palabras? En lo absoluto. La paradoja se deja entrever en la vida de los sabios y en todos sus escritos. De hecho, una de las lecciones más importantes que han venido a enseñarnos consiste en que no podemos ignorar o ahuyentar la tensión de los opuestos, porque así es como opera el universo. El místico sufí Rumi lo resumió cuando dijo que Dios “enseña por medio de opuestos de modo que tengas dos alas para volar, y no solo una.”
Las paradojas llegaron para quedarse. No podemos huir de ellas; solo podemos abrazarlas y volvernos uno con ellas, pues, en realidad, los aparentes opuestos son dos caras de la misma moneda destinadas a cohabitar en armonía.
El principio de la paradoja no se circunscribe a una religión. Sin importar nuestros orígenes o nuestras creencias, nos enfrentaremos a ella. Nuestra labor, dicen los sabios, consiste en aprender a fluir con las cadencias de la vida a medida que el universo nos pide que pongamos en primer plano primero una parte de la paradoja y, luego, la otra, en el momento y el lugar correctos. Como alguna vez dijo un experto iluminado: “Bienaventurados los flexibles, pues no perderán su forma.”
CREAR TÚNELES, NO DERRIBAR PAREDES
¿Qué ocurre cuando no abrazamos ambos lados de la paradoja? En lugar de crear túneles, derribamos paredes. Si nos negamos a honrar nuestras necesidades físicas, nuestro cuerpo puede dejar de funcionar y mandarnos a una cama de hospital de modo que nos veamos forzados a escuchar. Si, por otra parte, ponemos toda nuestra atención en nuestras necesidades materiales y no alimentamos nuestro espíritu, nuestra alma comienza a enfermarse y podemos caer en depresión sin darnos cuenta del porqué. En pocas palabras, cuando estamos fuera de equilibrio, nos tambaleamos. Es como estar sentados en un lado del subibaja que cae súbitamente cuando nuestro compañero de juego se va y nos deja solos: nos golpeamos contra el suelo porque no hay nada al otro lado que cree movimiento.
Considero que lo que más nos provoca estrés es nuestra incapacidad de reconocer y participar en el juego de la paradoja. Lo que con frecuencia nos mantiene estancados en un lado o en el otro de la paradoja son los mitos que nos han enseñado y con los cuales hemos crecido. Ni siquiera sabemos que se trata de mitos porque automáticamente los aceptamos como verdaderos. Se basan en suposiciones que hemos hecho con respecto a la forma como funciona el mundo, las cuales, como camisas de fuerza, nos impiden darnos la vuelta y ver la otra parte de la ecuación. Nos hacen creer que no tenemos otras opciones.
Cuando nos desequilibramos la vida envía a sus mensajeros —en la forma de circunstancias, personas y sucesos— para ayudarnos a restablecer el equilibrio. La naturaleza humana, por supuesto, nos hace querer salir corriendo en la dirección opuesta, incluso “matar” a los mensajeros, para no tener que escuchar el mensaje. Pero eso nunca funciona. Los mensajeros siguen viniendo hasta que nos detenemos y escuchamos y aceptamos su invitación a bailar.
Este libro explora una de las muchas paradojas de la vida: la paradoja de dar y recibir. Estamos llamados a dominar la delicada danza de dar y recibir prácticamente en todas las áreas de nuestra vida. Te enfrentarás a ella cuando te topes con temas de abundancia, autoestima, salud, relaciones, carrera y al descubrir tus verdaderos dones, por nombrar solo algunas. En esencia, la paradoja de dar y recibir se relaciona con el asunto primordial que desafía a tantos de nosotros: ¿Cómo equilibro lo que necesitan los demás con lo que yo necesito? Para poder dar a los demás, ¿en verdad necesito abandonarme yo?
Al final de cuentas, debo aclarar que honrarte a ti mismo no significa que te mimes demasiado. Y tampoco consiste en darle la espalda a quienes te necesitan. Los aspectos que rodean el dar y recibir son más profundos. Mucho más profundos. Cuando te honras a ti mismo estás respetándote, apreciándote y manifestando lo mejor de ti de modo que puedas dar de una forma creativa —y abundante— honrando a los demás.
Mientras la sociedad moderna no está preparada para regresarnos al equilibrio, los sabios de oriente y occidente son expertos. A lo largo de estas páginas descubrirás sus consejos prácticos y a veces sorprendentes para dominar el arte interno de dar y recibir. Aprenderás a reconocer los mitos que te han mantenido atrapado: mitos que, cual anteojeras, te impiden vivir una vida llena de posibilidades y pasión. RECUPERAR EL RITMO
Todos estamos en una clase de baile, aprendiendo a dominar un movimiento u otro. Todos somos estudiantes de la vida, aprendiendo nuevas formas de movernos en armonía con las cadencias de la música siempre cambiante de la vida. También, a nuestro modo, todos somos maestros a medida que compartimos con otras personas lo que vamos aprendiendo. Y, sí, paradójicamente, es cierto que con frecuencia enseñamos lo que más necesitamos aprender. Gracias a todos los temas que he abordado para los libros en los que he colaborado, he descubierto que así es, y este libro no es la excepción. Todos los días estoy aprendiendo lo que significa honrarme a mí misma y a honrar lo mejor de mí.
Dependiendo del día y del baile, aún me tropiezo y pierdo el ritmo. Aún tengo que detenerme, hacer algunas respiraciones profundas y retomar el paso con el ritmo de la música. Pero estoy aprendiendo, y eso es lo que cuenta para esos increíblemente pacientes instructores que me convencen y algunas veces me llevan arrastrando a la pista de baile. Tengo la seguridad de que mejoraré en el baile a medida que lo practique, pero también sé que siempre estaré aprendiendo. Siempre estaré dominando nuevos pasos para honrar y celebrar mis dones.
Así pues, en un estilo paradójico, podríamos decir que escribí este libro para ti y para mí. En parte, refleja mi propio viaje y los descubrimientos que he considerado tan valiosos que tenía que compartirlos contigo.
