The Year of Retail Contradictions
As we look ahead to the coming year, retailers in our industry are facing a more fascinating, challenging business landscape than ever before. We have dubbed 2014 the Year of Retail Contradictions.
For retailers, these contradictory ideas are:
• Successfully serving the different needs and preferences of both a large aging population and a tech-enabled Millennial group
• Managing physical stores while tending to the explosive growth of non store based retail
• Meeting consumer needs for convenience in product, services and formats that allow them to quickly get what they need while also enjoying the customized retail experiences they’ve come to expect and demand
Globally, these contradictions have tremendous impact on the retail landscape in 2014 and beyond. With that, here are the top eight predictions for retail in 2014, as identified through the lens of XX, a proprietary tool that tracks 72 consumer Microtrends across eight Megatrends.

Prediction 1: The Redefinition of the Hypermarket/Supercenter
In the coming year, we’ll see a notable shift from the hypermarket/supercenter culture we’ve seen in the last decade to a retail landscape where smaller formats prevail, including dollar stores, convenient superstores, express stores, discounters and small specialty stores.
The supercenter is not going away, but these smaller formats will become real category killers, stealing share from the supercenters and mass merchandisers that have triumphed in recent history. There will be more pressure on bigger formats in the US and globally to create compelling reasons for shoppers to visit.
Cultural Ecology
Societal trends such as increased urbanization, a rise in smaller households and consumers’ changing notion of convenience will drive the growth of smaller, more convenient formats. Additionally, online retailers will capture a greater share of planned trips, leaving bricks and mortar to capitalize on immediate needs.
Prediction 2: A Sharing Retail Economy
Consumers have figured out that owning bulky, rarely used items is both expensive and unsustainable, resulting in a growing number of sharing, renting and reusing options at retail that will play out in retail concepts and experiences.
For example, Rent the Runway allows consumers to rent designer dresses and accessories for short periods of time. Another service, Rentwant, connects users with peers, to rent items not constantly being used. This trend will have significant implications for global retailers in fashion, home improvement and office supply who must adapt and respond.
Conscious Raising
In their quest to live both smart and sustainably, consumers are finding ways to live efficiently, with less environmental impact, by redefining the “reduce, reuse, recycle” mantra.

Prévision 1 : la redéfinition de l'hypermarché (ou Supercenter en Amérique)
Au cours de l'année à venir, on assistera à un passage d'une culture de l'hypermarché, tel qu'il est devenu ces dix dernières années, à un paysage de la distribution où ce sont les petits formats de points de vente qui dominent, comme les dollar stores ou magasins à prix unique, les supermarchés de proximité, les magasins express, les hard-discounters et les petits magasins spécialisés.
Le concept d'hypermarché n'est pas prêt de disparaître, mais ces plus petits formats seront les vrais vainqueurs de la catégorie et gagneront des parts de marché sur les hyper et grandes surfaces, qui avaient pris le dessus ces dernières années. La pression s'accentuera sur les grandes surfaces aux États-Unis et dans le monde pour que celles-ci apportent une vraie raison aux shoppers de venir y faire leurs courses.
Écologie culturelle

Prévision 2 : la distribution du partage
Les consommateurs ont compris que posséder des objets encombrants et rarement utilisés s'avérait cher et non viable. Par conséquent, de nombreuses solutions de partage, location ou recyclage ont vu le jour, et celles-ci peuvent donner lieu à de nouveaux concepts et de nouvelles expériences dans la distribution.

Every year, I attend marketing conferences in France (All4customers in Paris in March) and the UK (Technology for marketing in September), as well as several trainings organised by the ITI (Institute of Translation and Interpreting) and CIOL (Chartered Institute of linguists), and topped up with some of the excellent workshops run by Magistrad.
