Una din sechelele cele mai persistente şi mai dăunătoare prin care presiunea sălbatică a regimului totalitar-colectivist şi-a lăsat dâra în mentalitatea generală a conaţionalilor noştri este însingurarea mefientă (şi agresivă), este destrămarea solidarităţii dintre semeni, este anularea directităţii şi cordialităţii comunicării umane, este nesocotirea (adică neluarea în calcul) a Celuilalt – începând chiar cu cel mai apropiat dintre vecini – altfel decât în calitatea sa de potenţial pericol ce se cere anihilat (sau de-a dreptul de duşman, trebuind deci a fi neapărat doborât).
Cum pot fi, în atari condiţii, refăcute legăturile fireşti dintre oameni? Întrebare grea, fără răspuns la-ndemână. Spusă cu alte cuvinte, ea ar putea suna în felul următor: cum anume pot fi retrezite la viaţă comunităţile de tot felul – începând bineînţeles cu acel nucleu generator al tuturora care este prietenia: cum ia naştere această celulă comunitară primordială, prilejuită de întâlnirea (de Întâlnirea cu majusculă!) a două persoane ce se înţeleg aşa-zicând «pe dinăuntru» (şi, deci, se şi iubesc)?
«Iubeşte-l pe aproapele tău ca pe tine însuţi!»
Dar cine e aproapele meu? Să fie cumva acel proxim spaţial pe care doar hazardul mi l-a aşezat în preajmă? Tot ce se poate; dar nu neapărat el în primul rând. (Vezi, în acest sens, vecinii de palier din blocurile-turn ale marilor oraşe!) La drept vorbind, «aproapele» este acel – până atunci – «îndepărtat» (chiar dacă aflându-se în imediată proximitate), acel «îndepărtat», deci, cu care se întâmplă (divină întâmplare!) să te Întâlneşti cu adevărat în chiar clipa în care, devenit la rându-i disponibil, şi el se întâlneşte cu tine, într-un comun act de inversare a direcţiei vizării: de unde, anterior «întâlnirii» în cauză, fiecare din cei doi îşi viza gospodăreşte propriul «sine» (măruntul lui sine cotidian), spre bunăstarea firească a căruia se străduia din răsputeri – fără, totuşi, a izbuti vreodată s-o obţină până la capăt (adică până la acel grad de satisfacţie care să se transforme într-un sentiment de auto-împlinire şiroind de bucurie) –, iată că «întâlnirea» de care vorbeam îl scoate pe fiecare dintre cei doi din propria sa albie şi-l proiectează în destinul celui din fața sa, devenit, acesta din urmă, pe neaşteptate, «tu», iar destinul lui la fel de important pentru tine ca al tău propriu (dacă nu chiar mai important!).
«Tu», adică un chip unic şi ireductibil, în pofida precedentei lui ocultări de către acel anonim «el» generic (l’uomo qualunque) în care zăcuse, obiectual, până să fie descoperit drept valoare-ţintă de către un alt «oarecare», devenit şi el la rându-i, pe loc, «cineva» – şi asta pentru bunul motiv că şi el fusese smuls, tocmai de cei pe care el însuşi îi smulsese, din masa fără chip a anonimilor «el/ei», conferindu-i-se prin reciprocitate statutul de valoare-ţintă: două demnităţi concomitente, iscate la capătul a două priviri întâlnindu-se, ambele excentrate, ambele de-narcisizate, luând ambele în cătare chipul (de sorginte divină) al celui din faţă, al alterităţii Celuilalt, al diferenţei (fie şi doar parţial) complementare: scurt spus: al persoanei a doua singular, căreia i te adresezi, faţă către faţă, spunându-i «tu» şi ştiind prea bine că, aidoma ţie, şi ea îşi spune sieşi «eu» atunci când, răspunzând apelului tău, îţi spune, la rându-i, «tu» (ţie, care din capul locului îţi spuseseşi ţie: «eu»).
Nu e deloc totuna s-o duci de pe o zi pe alta, înconjurat simţindu-te (doar tu, subiect adevărat) de o masă omogenă de indivizi «oarecare», obiecte antropomorfe perfect inter-şanjabile, în care la tot pasul să poţi da nas în nas cu duşmanii, sau, dimpotrivă, să trăieşti din plin într-o lume familiară, doldora de chipuri diferite unele de altele (şi de tine, bineînţeles), pe care le-ai descoperit doar uitându-te pe tine şi uitându-te la ele (la fiecare în parte) ca la cineva anume, cu disponibilitate şi solicitudine – şi cu încântată uimire. Căci lumea în care ţi se petrece viaţa e într-adevăr mai bogată sau mai săracă în proporţie directă cu capacitatea ta de a descoperi în juru-ţi miraculoasa bogăţie a diferenţelor, întruchipate în tot atâtea chipuri ireductibile care la rândul lor te vor descoperi pe tine, în deplină reciprocitate, ca unic, ireductibil şi de neînlocuit. Da, da: singura şansă a fiecăruia de a face parte dintr-o atare lume – reumanizată (şi re-vrăjită), adică din Lumea netrucată a lui Dumnezeu (în care să se simtă cu adevărat «acasă») –, descoperit fiind de către ceilalţi drept o persoană ireductibilă investită cu demnitatea asumării în deplină libertate a chipului propriu şi a împlinirii acestuia până la deplina asemănare; singura şansă, deci, a fiecăruia de a accede la propria-i împlinire este de a începe prin a se uita de-a binelea pe sine şi de a-şi întoarce privirea spre ceilalţi (luaţi unul câte unul) descoperindu-le fiecăruia în parte chipul propriu, unic şi ireductibil — şi iubindu-i în consecinţă (sub acoperişul unei aceleaşi case).

Translation - English Chapter: The root of the grass
One of the most persistent and most pernicious dysfunctionalities whereby the ferocious pressure of the totalitarian-collectivist regime has left its trail in the common mentality of our conationals is the distrustful aloofness (also aggressive), the dissolution of human solidarity, the suppression of the straightforwardness and cordiality of human communication, the disregard (that is, not taking into account) of the Other – beginning with even the closest of neighbours – otherwise than in his quality of a potential threat that requires annihilation (or downright as an enemy that thus by all means needs to be knocked-down).
How can, in such conditions, be restored the natural bonds between humans? Arduous question, without an answer at hand. Said with different words, it could sound in the following manner: in what way could communities of all sorts be reawakened to life – starting of course with that engendering nucleus of each and every one that is friendship: how does this primordial community cell come to life, occasioned by the meeting (by The Meeting written with capital letters!) of two persons who understand one another, so to say, «from within» (and, thus, also love each other)?
«Love your neighbour as yourself!»
But who is my neighbour? Could it possibly be that spatially contiguous one that only hazard placed in my vicinity? As like as not; but not necessarily him in the first place. (Think of, on these lines, the floor neighbours within the tower blocks of big cities!) Frankly speaking, «the neighbour» is that – up till then – «distant one» (even though situated in immediate vicinity), that «remote one», thus, with whom it happens (divine event!) for you To Meet truly in that very moment in which, become available in his turn, he too meets with you, in a mutual act of reversing sighting orientation: hence, prior to «the meeting» under consideration, each of the two was housewifely seeing about his own «self» (his petty everyday self), towards whose natural well-being he strived all out – without, however, ever succeeding to attain it to the fullest (that is to say, to that degree of satisfaction that would develop into a feeling of self-fulfilment overflowing with joy) –, behold that «the meeting» we were talking about pulls each one of the two out of his own runnel and projects him into the destiny of the one in front of him, become, this latter one, unexpectedly, «you», and his destiny as important for you as your own (if not even more important!).
«You», that is to say, a unique and irreducible image, despite its previous occultation by that anonymous generic «him» (l’uomo qualunque) in which it lay, objectually, until it was to be discovered as a target-value by another «commoner», become in his turn, on the spot, «someone» - and that for the good reason that he too was torn off, exactly by those that he himself had torn off, from the faceless mass of the «he/they» anonyms, being conferred through reciprocation the status of target-value: two concomitant dignities, brought forth at the end of two intersecting gazes, both ex-centred, both freed of narcissism, both taking in sight the image (of divine principle) of the one in front, of the alterity of the Other, of the complementary difference (be it only partial); briefly said: of the second person singular, whom you address, face to face, telling him «you» and knowing all too well that, the same as you, he too calls himself «I» when, responding to your appeal, he tells you, in his turn, «you» (to you, who from the very beginning have been calling yourself: «I»).
It is not at all the same to carry on from one day to the other feeling surrounded (with only you as a real subject) by a homogeneous mass of «commoners», perfectly interchangeable anthropomorphic objects, in which at every step you can bump into enemies, or, on the contrary, to fully live in a familiar world, teeming with faces distinct from one another (and from you, of course), which you have discovered only by forgetting yourself and gazing at them (at each individually) as to a certain someone, with availability and solicitude – and with enchanted wonderment. Because the world in which your life is spent is indeed richer or poorer in direct proportion with your capacity to discover the miraculous wealth of differences, embodied in also the same number of irreducible images who in their turn will discover you, in full reciprocity, as unique, irreducible and irreplaceable. Yes, yes: the only chance of each one to be a part of such a world – rehumanized (and recharmed), that is to say, of the Unfeigned world of God (in which he can feel truly at «home») – being discovered by the others as an irreducible person invested with the dignity of assuming in absolute liberty one's own image and of developing it to the fullness of likeness: the only chance, therefore, of each one to accede to self-fulfilment is of beginning by forgetting one's self for good and of turning one's sight towards the others (taken one by one), unveiling to each and every one, in part, your own image, unique and irreducible – and, consequently, loving them (under the roof of the same house).

Văzut-ați Banatul, astă țară românească dincolo de Carpați, unde totul în natură respiră poezie, amoare, patriotism? Aci munții caprițioși ce străbat toată țara se încolăcesc în formă de ghirlande rotunde, lăsînd loc în mijlocul lor la văile cele mai încîntătoare; aci, la umbra unui pom, pe marginea unei fîntîne, vezi un june român înalt, spătos, cu fruntea largă, cu ochii scînteind, reprezintația cea mai fidelă a tipului roman; aci, costumele, moravurile, tradițiunile, legendele naționale, toate se conservă cu mai multă stăruință, cu mai multă puritate decît în orice parte a României. Aci, naționalitatea și patriotismul nu este un nume, nici o vorbă de fanfaronadă, ci o luptă continuă, un răzbel de toate zilele.
Junimea țărană, veselă și viguroasă, pură de orice corupțiune, își uită într-un moment nevoile și păsurile sale și devine poetă, inspirată numai de simțimentele inimei sale. Pe vîrful unui deal, în mijlocul unei dumbrăvi verzi, aproape de obiectul inimei sale, junele transilvan învîrtește vestitul joc bănățean numit bănățeanca . Dar figurile acestui joc nu sunt izolate, nici nevariate, căci românul nu iubește monotonia și solitudinea.

Translation - English The Banatite Dance
Have you seen Banat, that Romanian land from across the Carpathians, where everything in nature exhales poetry, love, patriotism? Here the whimsical mountains that crosscut the entire country twist in the manner of cannular garlands, leaving room in their middle for the most enchanting of valleys; here, under a tree’s shading, on the ledge of a fountain, you can see a tall young Romanian, broad-shouldered, with large forehead, with sparkling eyes, the most faithful embodiment of the Roman type; here, garments, mores, traditions, national legends, all are preserved with greater perseverance, with greater purity than in other parts of Romania. Here, nationality and patriotism is neither a name, nor a word of rodomontade, but a continuous battle, an everyday struggle.
The peasant youth, joyful and vigorous, unspoiled by any corruption, instantly forgets its needs and grievances and becomes poetic, inspired only by the feelings of its heart. On the peak of a hill, in the middle of a green grove, close to its heart belongings, the Transylvanian lad “spins” the famous Banatite dance called “bănățeanca”. But the figures of this dance are neither isolated, nor unvarying, as the Romanian is not fond of monotony and solitude.

Elk Island National Park is an island, not in the geographical sense, but in terms of its landscape of small hills and depressions surrounded by flat plains, and by virtue of its purpose, to create a fenced refuge for the protection and preservation of 3000 head of hoofed mammals, one of the highest concentrations of big game animals in the world. It was the first federally controlled area in Canada to be enclosed to protect a native mammal, the elk, and also the first large mammal sanctuary established in Canada. Set in the Beaver Hills, 45 kilometres east of Edmonton, Alberta, its 194 square kilometres rises 60 metres above the surrounding prairie, an oasis of boreal mixed forest and aspen parkland vegetation. It is also an island of protection for the heritage resources within its boundaries, and an island of tranquillity for the 350 000-400 000 visitors who each year approach the park as a destination for nature and wildlife viewing.

Parcul Național Elk Island este o insulă, nu în sensul geografic, ci în termenii conformației sale peisagistice, fiind compus din dealuri mici și depresiuni înconjurate de câmpii netede, cât și în virtutea menirii sale, aceea de a crea un refugiu împrejmuit pentru protejarea și conservarea a 3000 de capete de mamifere copitate, una din cele mai mari concentrări de vânat mare din lume. A reprezentat primul ținut controlat de statul Canadian care a fost închis pentru a proteja un mamifer în arealul său nativ, elanul, și totodată prima rezervație de mamifere stabilită în Canada. Așezată în Beaver Hills, la 45 kilometri distanță est de orașul Edmonton al provinciei Alberta, cei 194 de kilometrii pătrați ai săi se înalță la 60 de metrii deasupra preriilor înconjurătoare, reprezentând o oază de pădure boreală mixtă și biomuri de tranziție presărate cu plopi tremurători. Este totodată o insulă care protejează în interiorul granițelor sale patrimoniul bogățiile naturale și un refugiu de odihnă pentru cei 350 000-400 000 de vizitatori care cercetează anual parcul, ca pe un loc unde pot admira natura și animalele sălbatice.
