English to French: South Africa warns Europ General field: Other Detailed field: Government / Politics
Source text - English A letter to the young European who is being swept away by the furore of extremist politics
I wonder if there is a human emotion that has shifted the course of history quite like fear. Lurking in the footnotes of history’s darkest chapters, the scent of fear is detectable through the ages - from the crusades to colonisation, the Nazi concentration camps, and the politics of the Cold War.
But I do not need to tell you this, for I am quite sure you are well aware of Europe’s role in these particular episodes of the past.
What surprises me then is that in spite of the damage wrought by fear, the present political sentiment in parts of your continent would suggest that little has been gleaned from the experiences of your forefathers.
What I thought was simply a latent fear, stirring only as far as the walls of a shabby little Neo-Nazi den would allow, seems to be weaving its way into the public political sphere. A sentiment that should remain behind museum doors is being resurrected and broadcast on political podiums, banners and t-shirts.
Politicians have adopted the language of the fear of the Other.
These political rumblings must be considered carefully and cautiously, for before long, as they did in South Africa, they will become policy and they will take over your parliaments, your courts, your police stations and your press. The pillars on which your democracies stand will tremble as they begin to rot from within. And everything good that comes from your country will be tainted by the stench of fear.
Xenophobia and racism will become mainstream and socially acceptable and before you know it, the language of fear will become yours. Eventually you will not know where the darkness of your politician’s fears end, and your individual goodness begins.
It happened in South Africa under apartheid, and it can happen in your country too. Many white South Africans carry a tender guilt in their hearts, for their complicity in the horrors of the past – even if it was only through their silences. It is easier to claim, as they so often do, that they didn’t know the extremist policies they voted for election, after election, were tearing up the lives of black South Africans throughout the country. To admit that would be to concede that the politics of fear embedded itself in their homes and in their hearts and it changed them.
Though South Africa has seen the worst of itself and come full circle, there is still much to be done in purging ourselves of the hatred that consumed this country for almost five decades, and most of all the fear, the fear.
But as our new constitution so beautifully states “South Africa belongs to all who live in it, united in our diversity.” Unlike Europe, we have decided that we can live together. We have decided we can be free from the fear that inspired apartheid and visit it once in a while in museums, where it belongs.
