Source text - English J is a 14 year-old girl living with her parents in a small town. She has severe asthma which was detected at a very young age. In addition to heightened response to specific allergens, J’s asthmatic attacks are also triggered by exercise, cold air and when she feels anxious. These attacks last 1-2 hours and occur several times a week. She is currently prescribed a bronchodilator and is to use a nebulizer prophylactically. In the last year, however, J is often inconsistent in following the medication regimen with the result that acute episodes are occurring more frequently. From the time she was enrolled in a preschool program to the present, J’s school attendance has been marked by frequent absences. The result has been that her achievement has been consistently poor, and while she has not failed any grades she is falling farther and farther behind her peers.
Translation - Spanish J es una joven de 14 años que vive con sus padres en una pequeña ciudad. Sufre de asma grave, la cual se le diagnosticó desde muy temprana edad. Además de la mayor respuesta a alérgenos específicos, los ataques asmáticos de J también son ocasionados por el ejercicio, el aire frío y la ansiedad. Estos ataques duran de 1 a 2 horas y se producen varias veces a la semana. Actualmente, el médico le recetó un broncodilatador y utiliza un nebulizador con fines profilácticos. Sin embargo, en el último año, J no ha seguido el régimen de medicación de forma consistente y esto ha llevado a que los episodios agudos ocurran con más frecuencia. Desde el instante en que inicio su etapa preescolar hasta la actualidad, la asistencia de J a la escuela se ha caracterizado por ausencias frecuentes. Como resultado su rendimiento ha sido por lo regular pobre, y aunque no ha reprobado ningún año, cada vez está más atrasada respecto a sus compañeros.
