WHY DECIDE TO CARRY OUT A RAPID SURVEY?
Let’s start with an example —
A health program in an African country was helping to decrease diarrhea morbidity in District X through encouraging point of use (POU) water treatment. A target for improved POU water treatment activity was to achieve 26% of the population in the program area using POU by the end of the first year. Unfortunately, information about the indicator of interest was only available at the national level (through the National Demographics and Health Survey). The program decided to conduct a rapid household survey to fill the information gap. The rapid survey found that for the entire District the target of 26% had been reached. This was good news. However, the program team was also interested in assessing if all five sub divisions (also called supervision areas) in Distrct X, each managed by different supervisors, have achieved the stated target.
